2021-07-16 20:28:19 +0000 UTCI remember reading 'Civilization and its Discontents' in college, and it has some great passages like talking about how technology combined with humanity's impulses will result in more and more destructive wars... and then it had a two page footnote/detour about how the first technology humanity figured out was fire, and how it was phallic, and we learned to control our impulses by dousing it with water, which he considered yonic. At that point I was like 'cocaine is a helluva drug' XD

2021-07-16 11:44:58 +0000 UTCAgreed. The vast majority of Freud has been proven crackpot theories at best, or him projecting his own very-unique circumstances onto the majority of humanity. But a few specific aspects DO hold up in modern psychology, even if he's been debunked overall, and if I remember correctly his understanding of impulses in and of themselves (not their guiding motivation) is one such. I'm very much looking forward to where Cameron goes with this.

This page does a good job of getting me interested in where he's going with how this theory applies to Olivia, whether or not he's right, and whether his intentions are purely clinical, or something more than that.
