New Story: Fauna Remnata - Chapter 1

Yo! This is a bit of a treat for you all since I've gotten way more support on Patreon than I was expecting to! This is chapter 1 of my RWBY Mecha story, which I've been writing off and on for the last few months. It's not set in stone, and the title especially might change if I think up something better, but for now, give it a read if you would!

Once you're done, if you wouldn't mind, I'd love to hear from you guys what you think about the chapter! How do you like Jaune's characterization, how do you feel about the overall tone, did you like the opening narration? Stuff like that. Also, how many Gundam references were made in this first chapter? if someone guesses correct, they'll earn a prize... that prize being me commenting "That's right! Nice job!" but a prize nonetheless!

This is going to likely be the longest story I've ever written, probably being several hundred thousand words in overall length. I hope you guys are excited for what's to come!

Thanks in advance, guys, and I hope you enjoy the chapter!

Sorry I never got around to replying to this! For the stuff I CAN answer, I'll say that yes, the faunus evolved on a separate planet, Fauna, which shares a binary orbit with Remnant. They orbit one another, whilst orbiting the star in their solar system. The solar system is about the size of our own. Less planets, though. Only five.

Fitting that a gold trimmed death machine would be dubbed “yellow death”. Definitely fits the theme, never really gotten much into gundam but I’ve always liked Macross and mech media in general. Definitely enjoyed the pilot of this fic. Using Pyrrha as the AI was also quite fitting, stays in the Greco-Roman spirit while giving Jaune his canonical partner. Now I’m wondering how the teams will be configured since Pyrrha is a computer. Perhaps the Gundam will be ad-hoc stuck onto various Hunter squads as a problem fixer? Definitely excited to find out. As for the Faunus, are we meant to assume they evolved on a separate planet independently of humanity and upon contact launched into war? If so how big is the solar system? Is it like Firefly or similar to real life Sol? The Grimm almost gives a Mi-Go vibe of Lovecraftian lore. There’s actually a similar scenario to this in CthuluTech where humans meet a humanlike race they eventually make an alliance with to fight the real enemy of monstrous horrors. Anywho, I definitely dig it.

Also thank you for commenting on the idea, you're probably right in terms of it being a bit early. I pushed the date back about thirty years, since that date doesn't ultimately matter much. Thanks for the feedback!

My recommendation on shows is kind of complicated. Basically, for Gundam, there's one major timeline (UC) and a bunch of minor timelines (all the spinoffs). For UC, you start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam, probably the compilation movies, which are on Netflix, Hulu, etc, and then you watch in release order (zeta -> double zeta -> CCA). You can find more info on stuff like that just by googling. Personally, I think my favorite series outside the UC is either Gundam Seed (watch the HD remasters if you can) or Gundam 00. Witch from Mercury is very modern as well (newest show) and is a lot more upbeat compared to the traditional trudging through darkness that Gundam usually is. I'd say one of those would work!

I really liked it. Both opening narration and generally Jaune's thoughts are well written and seems believable. My only nitpick is which might be either a Gundam reference or maybe misunderstanding on my part but only 9 year after widespread space colonization seems to be too short for rising tensions to escalate to a war I think. Generally that widespread colonization efforts somewhat cooled rising tensions between powers until new land became scarce again like Scramble for Africa etc. As this type of land grab usually is expensive enough to deter military buildup and in this case half of the population left. But of course either vastly overestimating their strength from Remnant side(First Ethiopia vs Italy War etc.) while sufficient need for manpower might explain fast escalation. Or it was just a reference to Gundam which I never watched then just act like I did not said anything. I also really like you used Pyyrha as AI of the mech. Overall seems to be a really promising story. Though do you have suggestion to which Gundam anime to watch? I never watched them as they were too numerous and I did not now which one I should start with.
