I hear you and agree with almost everything you mentioned. However, there is significant research-backed evidence that short form content's popularity is shortening attention spans and as a former teacher and current therapist I think it's really important that we acknowledge that. Do I think that's a reason to ban TikTok or force people to stop using it? Absolutely not. But we have to acknowledge that it's happening so that we can adjust the way we teach and treat accordingly or the quality of education and mental health will only continue to decline.

That so ignorant and annoying especially coming from a extroverted white man. The internet including Tiktok connects us with so many more people than you would be able to meet IRL. Its not realistic to think you can get as wide of a range of perspectives and honest opinions by just walking outside and interacting with strangers. Also, as a woman (and especially as a a woman of color) going to public spaces and engaging with strangers is not in your best interest. Men so often forget that interacting with strangers is not safe for women. So the internet is a good way for women and POCs to engage in societal discourse without microaggressions or putting themselves in danger. Also, extroverts still, and will always, go to public spaces, the internet just allows introverts to get the same benefits extroverts get from socializing. Saying Tiktok is bad because of that is, in a way, just gatekeeping socializing. Also, I don't think its lowering attention spans. I don't know anyone who uses Tiktok regularly who can't also sit through a 2 hour movie. I know some very young people who watch Tiktok who are also capable of doing other activities for long periods of time. It doesn't make sense to say that Tiktok shortens your attention span if people are watching it for hours... If any social media related thing is shortening your attention span its the speed setting, which has been a feature on youtube for years and was also a setting on old pc media players.
