gilmore girls hiatus update - and let's find a new show!

corn pawps!!!

as you all know it was decided to have wednesdays be our sort of hybrid day where we would watch a season of gg, then a small series of something else, then back to gg etc - HOWEVERRRR even though gg season 1 has wrapped, i really want to watch the fall show during the fall, so we are going to do a little workaround.

we are going to go straight into season 2, and instead do the hiatus mid season during the holidays, you know, kinda like they did on tv back in the old days :P

that being said - i want to decide what our hiatus show will be soon, so that i can make sure i can source the episodes etc etc.

so toss em at me! let's make a list of all the possible options, then i will put up a poll sometime next week!!

please just make sure it is either a) a short series or b) a series with short seasons that we may be able to rotate gg seasons with!

excited to see what you all are interested in seeing!!

xo

gilmore girls hiatus update - and let's find a new show!

Comments

I was going to suggest this but I didn’t know if it was available online anywhere.

allison lussier

12 Monkeys, not very well known but by far the best written contained series I've ever watched. 4 seasons of storytelling perfection with no loose ends or plot holes.

Systemise And Scale

Orphan Black is a great shout!!

Andrea

I was just about to suggest this!

Calvin Allen

Man Grosse Pointe is a deeeeep cut.

SunnydaleClassof99

Casting my vote for Mrs. Maisel, Sherlock, Ginny & Georgia, Queen's Gambit, Haunting of Hill House, or Wednesday!

Kyndall Boxell

Grosse Pointe or Wonderfalls

OfficialTiggy

I know you don’t like ghosts, but The Haunting of Hill House fucking rules, as does The Haunting of Bly Manor. If ghosts are too much of a deterrent for you, anything else by Mike Flanagan should work. Midnight Mass and The Fall of yhe House of Usher are masterpieces. The Midnight Club might have been if it had gotten another season or two to finish the story.

Michael Mammano-Cheydleur

I'm about 95% sure she's seen it already.

SunnydaleClassof99

The show that I hate most in the world is Ringer. Like, I hate it with a burning passion. I wish I could put this tv show on fire and watch it burn. Hate it. Awful. [not to crap on your suggestions, it's just that i feel so strongly that i need to voice it lol]

Lais

She did Firefly already, it was my first binge here

Lais

If you are able to fit something short, Please watch The Good Place if you haven't already. Best series ever, makes you think and laugh so much while having philosophical discussions. Just 4 seasons of 13 episodes each 20 minutes. Short, sweet and with incredible twists you cannot predict in each episode. Written with the end in mind, so overwhelmingly satisfying.

C_Drew

Lets see…short seasons but good , tends to imply either miniseries or uk ones….Blackadder. Red Dwarf. Firefly. Sherlock…Black mirror, life death & robots. .

Andrew Nicholson

I do think the obvious choice is Orphan Black. It's great, and has one of the best central performances in television history. But that aside, it was the only thing that came close to GG 's votes in the poll, and it fills the criteria of having nice short seasons.

Paflad

Haunting of Hill House and Orphan Black!

Nicole

you should do "FROM" its soo good

charmed_olive

Definitely here for Orphan Black.

SunnydaleClassof99

I'll probably throw at some more choices that won't gain traction. One is Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. It's about a liberal society woman that stumbles into the detective game in late 1920's Australia. Her supporting characters that assist her including her maid & a pair of working class Communist taxi drivers There's 34 episodes & a movie. It's a thoroughly charming series with great period setting & a captivating lead.

SunnydaleClassof99

Orphan Black, 2015 Netflix Daredevil. Both shortish, both with lots of drama, twists and turns, character stuff, cool sci Fi aspects, makes for good reactions.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

this is maybe THE show that inspired Joss for Buffy - its definitely a must watch for Darcie!!

madfem

All these people wanting Freaks & Geeks but I want to see Undeclared 🤣

SunnydaleClassof99

The Lost Room is a 2003 miniseries that has only three 90 minute episodes. I don't want to say anything about the plot since I recommend going in as cold as possible. I will say I think it's legitimately the best thing The Sci-Fi Channel has done in its entire existence.

SunnydaleClassof99

Dead Like Me is getting a lot of traction in Discord. I think that would be an outstanding choice. Just do not watch the direct to video movie that came out years later.

SunnydaleClassof99

Strongly in favor of Orphan Black. It polled strong the last time. Not only is it an amazing show, each season isn't too long either at 10 episodes.

SunnydaleClassof99

crazy ex-girlfriend. 4 seasons, 62 episodes. i'd consider it a mid-length series, but i see several suggestions for longer ones. on the shorter side, fully co-sign others' suggestions of derry girls, fleabag, haunting of hill house, my so-called life, freaks and geeks if you haven't seen it (but i think i recall you mentioning something about it before that made me think you have).

nj

haunting of hill house is 10 episodes - but an amazing show, fully support.

nj

Another show for feel-good vibes and a Canadian classic— Anne With an E

VicRam

Oh My Gosh...you got a lot of suggestions! Honestly I'm surprised how many suggested super long shows, but I'd rather see something short. Andor - 2 seasons, 24 total episodes. You don't need to follow or no anything about Star Wars to enjoy this show. Best thing out of Disney + in...well ever! Kevin Can F**k Himself - 2 seasons, 16 total episodes. This is a bit different of a vibe from everything else you watch. It's a drama that takes place inside a sitcom. Queen's Gambit - 1 season, 7 episodes. Already suggested, but absolutely fun. Haunting of Hill House - 1 season, 10 episodes total. Not going to lie, this is scary! But it is also very well done drama about a family!

Jaci

Or for a short 5 movies you can do The 10th Kingdom which I feel like you would LOVE

Steven Winthrop

Dark Angel, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies.

Steven Winthrop

Bad Sisters, Fleabag, Derry Girls

Hilary Page

Lots of great suggestions. I’m also going to add “My So-Called Life”. One season 19 episodes. 1994 peak TV .

Nettie

Leverage original series. 5 seasons but only 77 episodes.

Rachel Milliken

Girls on HBO It's got a few seasons, but think it would be a fun rotation with GG. Just like more girlhood times :)

Samgria

You should defo check out Peaky blinders ( theres 6 seasons but only 6 episodes per season) the first episode puts alot of people off but trust me it was the same for me and its now my favorite tv show other than AOS 🫶

Katie 🫶

I haven't watched many miniseries, but The Penguin definitely!

James

Derry Girls, Only Murders in the Building, Ginny & Georgia, or Heartstopper would all be excellent options 💖

Aria Carter

★"Ringer" staring our Buffy girl: SMG. It is 22 episodes, but only one season. ★"Dark Angel" it's from 2000. Created by James Cameron. It does have two seasons (S1=20 S2=21) and might be tricky to source, but I think it's worth it if you can. ★"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" 2 seasons (S1=9 S2=22) None of them are particularly short seasons, aside from the first season of Sarah Connor, but overall they were all too short lived making them rather short series. And they're just great shows. 🙂

Samanthadiane

Yes!! Although it can be very difficult to find. I had to watch it on YouTube in poor quality and there were a few episodes missing only 1-3 of them, but still.

Samanthadiane

Ginny and Georgia cuz it’s a short season to fill in holiday months

rudy

- Life Unexpected (family drama; 26 eps total; 2 seasons; highly underrated series) - Timeless ( sci-fi history drama; 28 eps total; 2 seasons + 2 hr movie finale) - The Haunting of Hill House (miniseries; family drama with a horror background; 10 eps ) - Sons of Anarchy (crime family drama; 92 eps total; short 13 episode seasons) - Roswell (1999; sci-fi; 61 eps total; longer seasons but can be split in half as needed) - Scream: The TV Series (3 short seasons but only the first 2 seasons really matter IMO)

cruzinbosco

Orphan Black. There is 5 seasons, but each season is only 10 episodes.

Peta D

I love Jericho

Neil Prospect

Oh this is actually the perfect slot-filler between Gilmore Girls. I second this

TheLoungingPotato

Any show by Mike Flannagan would be so ideal, but starting from his first would be the best way to do it--The Haunting of Hill House Only 8 episodes (edit: 10, actually--I stand corrected) so should fit the holiday hiatus slot

TheLoungingPotato

Dark angel 2 seasons :)

Eve Black

Mrs. Maisel would be perfect! See our current Lois Lane be somehow even more awesome and funny.

Andrea

There’s so many good options! Putting in more votes for Mrs Maisel, Fleabag, Derry Girls, The Haunting of Hill House, Shrinking and The Queens Gambit. And adding Peaky Blinders (completely different vibe but honestly one of the best series I’ve ever seen. Such great characters, writing and acting) Ghosts (the original UK series. Incredibly fun watch) and All Creatures Great and Small (the current series that started in 2020 not the original. British period drama. Honestly one of the most feel good shows with the sweetest characters). 💕

Lesley

Only Murders in the Building is great. The Fall (British drama) is fantastic and has short seasons. Harper's Island was a summer show, with just one season (13 episodes, I think).

Becky Mitchell

Jericho! It's so underrated.

Melissa

I’ve a few I think you may enjoy-.Only Murderers In the Building: lovely cast and a good season (10 eps) long mystery. Wednesday: (8 eps) also has a season long mystery. Psych: a bit longer at 15 EPS in the first season, but a great comedy play on the Sherlock Holmes trope where this guy opens a psychic detective agency (he’s not psychic) and works with the police, it’s the most humorous of the 3, and a bit more episodic with the mysteries.

allison lussier

Yesss! Think of the board possibilities!

allison lussier

I love Haunting of Hill House

Ray D

School Spirits!

Johnny Coleman

I wanna make the case for Ginny and Georgia! Wednesdays could still be G.G. day for starters and it's still a mom and daughter dynamic...but with a lil twisty twist (you're always saying with gilmore that you expect more drama to happen but have to remind yourself the type of show you're watching lol g&g will have you covered on that) 😊 (edit to add: it's 3 seasons, 10 episodes each btw)

Jayme

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. 31 episodes 9 in season 1. 22 in season 2

Eric Haefele

Definitely agree with those who said Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, that would kind of be perfect because the seasons are 8-10 episodes (and of course its also an Amy Sherman Paladino creation)!

boleynns

Caprica 19 episodes

Eric Haefele

Adding another one for Derry Girls! I think you’d love it!

DaniJay

Teenage Bounty Hunters 10 episodes

Eric Haefele

Derry Girls or Heartstopper would be amazing!

emmaaa

Any of Mike Flanagan’s Netflix shows… Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, etc. They are all single season shows with 10 eps or less. I know you hate ghosts but these shows are worth it!!

VicRam

Only murders in the building

juliet

THE NIGHT AGENT A hit show from Netflix! 2 seasons of 10 episodes were released. It has already been renewed for seasons 3 and 4.

juliet

The Queen's Gambit 7 episodes

Eric Haefele

I’m going to suggest Galavant again, just for fun. It’s two seasons, 8 episodes the first season and 10 the second. Also super short episodes, under 30 minutes. Although I can’t find it available in Canada anymore… it used to be on Disney+ here but not any more. Someone else also suggested Avatar the last airbender if you haven’t seen it, I second that whole heartedly!

Ellie

Or Derry Girls!

Olivia Sawler

Putting in my vote for Maisel too

Patrick Kelly

A big popular one that everyone has reacted to and which is absolutely worth the hype is Arcane, if you haven't seen it already (2 seasons of 9 episodes). Another idea, to go in a completely different direction than anyone's said so far... how do you feel about pirates? Black Sails is an excellent show about pirates with 4 seasons of 8 episodes each, so each season could easily serve as a hiatus show.

Neil Silverman

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Shrinking, or Derry Girls!

Colleen

Torchwood - The Doctor Who Spinoff that stared Captain Jack Harkness (with cameos from other Doctor Who characters). What "Angel" is to "Buffy" Torchwood is to the early Russel T Davies seasons of Doctor Who. Reason to watch - You already love Captain Jack Harkness so why not watch his spinoff? Also, short seasons. season 1 only 13 episodes. Freaks and Geeks - The greatest 1 season show of all time. The Judd Apatow / Paul Feig run dramedy is an amazing coming of age show that's equal parts hilarious and heartfelt. Known now a lot for staring actors that were unknown that would become stars, Linda Cardellini, James Franco, Seth Rogan, Jason Segel, Busy Philips, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, and more. Reason to watch, Only 1 seaason. From wikipedia, "In 2008, Entertainment Weekly ranked it the 13th-best series of the past 25 years. The same year, AOL TV named it the Best School Show of All Time. In 2013, TV Guide included it in its list of The 60 Greatest Dramas of All Time, and ranked it No. 1 on their list of 60 shows that were "Cancelled Too Soon". In 2016, it was named the 11th-greatest television series of all time by Rolling Stone."

Ray D

Crashing, Chewing Gum and Please Like Me are all amazing, it would be really fun to watch it along, I haven't seen them in a long time

Lais

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel- ~43 episodes over 5 seasons, also from Amy Sherman-Palladino so very similar vibes to Gilmore Girls

skelly keys

Love Sweet/Vicious

Connor

Only Murders In the Building please!

Olivia Sawler

British shows tend to be 6 episodes a piece, sometimes slightly longer, and there's so, so many fantastic shows. I'll keep it to a short list of faves for now; Crashing, Chewing Gum, Feel Good. I love the first season of Bad Sisters (Irish show). Please Like Me is a great underrated Australian comedy. There's so many great suggestions through the comments so I'm excited to see what we get!

Connor

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel :)

James B.

Ooh another vote for Sherlock or only murders in the building. The good place is also a great option if you haven’t seen it yet

Lindley Daw

Downton Abbey…six seasons but they are all short

JEREMY SCHULTZ

BBC Sherlock (1h30 episodes, but only 15 episodes), Steven Universe (10min episodes), Being Erica (around 10 episodes per season, 4 seasons), You, Me and the Apocalypse (10 episodes) Sweet/Vicious (10 episodes) more: Pushing Daisies, Maniac, Selfie, and The Good Place (i don't think anybody would mind that you've seen it already, we just wanna watch together lol) I also second Orphan Black top tier stuff

Lais

Shrinking (AppleTV+) Andor (Disney+)

Ariel17

FLEABAG!

Matthew Shields

Silo (Apple TV) it’s got 10 episodes and 2 seasons are out, season 3 is coming out soon.

carly powell

Rooting for a lil animated show like The Last Airbender or Clone Wars 😅 a little long-ish but the episodes are really short so you can cram 2 into 1!

Daniel McGuinness

The curse (2023)

madfem

Wednesday

Sarah

Another vote for Heartstopper here! I also recommend Fleabag.

Kat

The summer I turned pretty 🌞

Clara Gros-Louis

Only Murders In The Building is a must, 10 episodes per season.

Pól

The Gilded Age

Lilo

DYING at (yes thats the title) hahahah

darciesnothere

The Artful Dodger (currently 8 episodes but will be back for another season at some point), Julie & The Phantoms (1 season and cancelled BUT if you ignore the last 5 minutes it wraps up pretty well), His Dark Materials (8 episode seasons, 3 of them, feels like a wintery show to me) anddd My Mad Fat Diary (short seasons)

Emily Marshall

Years and Years. A limited 2019 series, which just so happens to have been written by Russell T Davies. Files wouldn't be an issue. :)

Death Lego

i havent!! ive gone to start it SO many times and havent so maybe thats a sign hehe

darciesnothere

Sense8, School Spirits, Warrior Nun

Shaun Stacy

Nobody Wants This (yes, that's the title) The first season has 10 episodes Season 2 is coming out at the end of October, but I think it will also have 10 episodes. It also pulls a lot of the same crowd as GG

Fae 22

Heartstopper

Viviane

Heartstopper If you haven’t already watched it lol

Alec, Seeker of Shine Sprites

Personally, I'd like either The Queen's Gambit (7 episodes) or His Dark Materials (3 seasons of 7/8 episodes).

Dyrla

Twisted Metal

Tuckgrr (Doctor Nerderer)
