Elsa Fox is no longer with us 😔

Elsa passed away from a intestinal blockage. She received surgery and died two days later.

I feel terrible.

This past month is the first time we've experienced having to take foxes in for surgery due to a blockage. 100's of foxes have gone through this rescue and somehow we get two foxes in the same month with a blockage.

One of our foxes Penguin pulled through after blockage surgery.
Elsa did not.

I find this post difficult to write because I can't help but blame myself when death occurs. I'm responsible for these animals, responsible for communication, and responsible for my staffs direction.

I feel that if I was more familiar with this medical occurrence and managing the staff with her aftercare that she could have been saved.

With medical bills so high lately we require staff to approve medical bills. When Elsa starting going down hill and needed emergency care, I was on a plane back to the MN SAF Sanctuary and I didn't get the message until we landed. I've never been in a situation where staff couldn't reach us.
I'll never know that if I had seen the message three hours earlier and approved the vet visit if she could have been saved.

A hard lesson was learned. A new emergency protocol will be put in place.

I feel terrible that the first fur farm fox I picked out was also our first loss 😔

Elsa Fox is no longer with us 😔

So sorry to hear this. Just remember this: You are the light she came to from the fur farm. We and all the foxes love you, their angel Mikayla... 🦸‍♀️🦊❤️

[HUG], Mikayla, Ethan and SaveAFox family. I'm so sorry to hear this. Elsa fox was a wonderful girl, especially to come out of a fur farm! What real life she had was because of your work.

I am so so sorry for your loss! That is so heartbreaking.

I can't say anymore than echo the sentiments of everyone here, and to say how very sorry I am at Elsa's passing. YOU are the BEST person these foxes ever had. x

We all see that you do the very best for these foxes, there’s no denying that. Unfortunately there will be a few in the mix who won’t make it sometimes. Please don’t blame yourself. It’s part of rescue work, and you do so much good for them. Don’t forget that you are an incredible person Mikayla.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Elsa Fox. What you gave her was more than she would of had otherwise. Her passing hurts all of our hearts but it's not your fault, not anyone's fault. Sometimes we get thrown a curve ball in life. RIP Elsa Fox

Laurie Unbehaun

It isn’t anyone’s fault. Sometimes accidents happen. You gave her a longer life than she would have had, and you gave her a happy life. We all grieve with you.

Helpful Turtle

Don't blame yourself, you simply cannot be everywhere and you do all you can for them. Sorry for your loss 😥 May she find her way to the land of never ending chimkin treats 🌈🦊❤️

You, Ethan, and your beautiful little love, and all at SAF have always done the best and beyond what you can. ALWAYS! You all took on what could be termed impossible by most, but you are making it happen. All those before the farm 500, and as many as you can of those 500. I've been a small part for over 5 years now, and know you will never give up what your heart says is your path. YOU ARE NEVER ALONE! I hope you can remember that when most needed. 💓

It was not your fault! You did all you could and you have no idea if an emergency vet visit would have helped. You gave Else a longer, better like than her birth had destined for her, you gave her happiness, joy, LOVE! You have nothing but the best intentions, goals, and training--things just happen, even with the best of plans. You are rescuing 500 foxes. The fact so many have survived has been INCREDIBLE! I have no question that is because of the hard work you put into it. I am so sorry for your loss, I know you are devastated and nothing we say will change the heartbreak you feel, but please do know we all understand. We know you're crying your eyes out and that you'd do anything to change what happened, please know we don't blame you one bit. Else was born nameless and destined to know nothing but a wire cage and zero compassion except for being fed--her existence was someone elses financial gain and nothing more... until you. You DID save her, just not for as long as you'd have liked. But you gave her a life! You made her important and ensured she wasn't just fur, she was a living being who deserved care.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Focus on the positive elements. Elsa got to know love like so many do not. 🩷

MPotter

You gave her what she never had before, love and a home. Saying don’t blame yourself isn’t going to make you not blame yourself even though you shouldn’t. At the very least she was able to enjoy some freedom and affection.

Alex Hunter

You shouldn’t blame yourself. We all know..as well as you…that had you known you were needed at that moment you would have been there to make the right decision. You do so much for all these animals. One can’t always be in control…but you realize now what is necessary and we can only have hope that you don’t have to go through this pain again. Rest in peace Elsa….you beautiful soul

:( poor Elsa fox...

I’m so sorry for your loss. 🖤 Please don’t blame yourself. There’s no winners in the “coulda shoulda woulda” blame game. You did your best. You ALWAYS do your best, and no one here would disagree with that. The new protocols will be helpful I’m sure, though. We never stop learning from the bumps in the road of life, and the day we think we know it all is the day we become less helpful and less effective. Please take some time to be with your family and destress. RIP Elsa. 🌈🦊

I’m sure Elsa fox took so much happiness having her paws on the ground in freedom for as long as she did. That’s the thing about trying to rescue 500 foxes, percentage wise there are some unavoidable tragedies. Sorry for your loss and RIP Elsa Fox
