Under Bertone designer Marcello Gandini, Fiat found its way to the wedge-shape car market that had taken early 1970s sports car designs by storm. The X1/9 represented an affordable sports car that delivered exciting performance anywhere but the drag strip. X1 was the prototype code for passenger cars, with the X1/9 being the ninth car developed. Mounted just behind the passenger compartment are the engine and transmission from the Fiat 128.
