Somebody plotting
Comments
There are substances that definitely potentially hazardous, but to think how elaborate this scheme must be, and how much planning and maneuvering it would require! I was also focused on how the information from the inner palace is passed to the plotters, and who seemed suspicious. Maomao agonizes over what is deliberate and what is coincidence. Noticing what's going on seems to be the key. In other words, you have to separate the important information from the background noise of everyday events. Not just Maomao, but us, too.

I was rewatching Season 1 by watching other reactions, and one of the reactors explicitly referred to a comment informing her this anime took place in Ancient China, specifically 7th century, which is already technically not considered ancient. But the story includes both cocoa and tobacco. The most likely time period is actually Ming Dynasty, 1368 to 1644. During this time China was considered to be at the center of world trade. Trade with the New World occurred through Spain via Manila, and its core trade good was silver (it was also imported from Japan). They do use a ton of silver in this show. Don't think of China as some country that doesn't have much contact with other cultures, at this late time period. Also Gyokuyou was explicitly described as being a bit exotic due to her bright hair and jade eyes. ................ Later edit: After watching the whole episode, I realized that the Ming Dynasty roughly correlates to the time when the Black Death did its damage in Europe in repeated waves. I don’t know what happened to China regarding the Plague, but I wonder if somehow the disease going to pop up. I hope not. But didn't we just get a cat? To catch rats? [I have no foreknowledge of the future plot.]

S1:E1, Maomao specifically mentions that anyone in the rear castle can become a low level concubine.
This place exists not only for the Emperor to find a wife, but produce many children for politics. The high consorts are the ones in the running for Empress, while the low and mid level concubines are mostly seeking to provide wealth for their family back home. If they provide a child for the emperor, the family would gain political favor with the emperor, as well as gifts and money as thanks for the child. This is the whole reason women are offered up to the rear palace and why some of them are less than faithful to the emperor.

hmmm.... based on the interaction its clear to me Jinshi is not an eunuch lol. And if he drank that, he probably doesnt want Maomao to drink that.

I love that Maomao is comfortable enough around Jinshi now to talk freely enough that she's being snarky and making off-color jokes
