I liked the dubbed version of this fight more but it still hits the feels. you might have misinterpreted about gaara's defense the sand shield is automatic and drains no chakra while the sand armor he covers himself in isn't automatic and drains a lot of chakra. I had to do a fair amount of googling and was only able to find when Gaara vs rock lee was released July 2, 2001 in weekly shounen jump #29 in chapter 81 of naruto so still not sure if crocodile came first or after.
