I made this...omg...YEARS ago! Still some of my favorite memories from one of my favorite games/experiences ever.
I'm uploading the full res version for you guys â¤ï¸
As you can see this differs from my current style a lot. I did these in a very experimental way that helped me shape my art and identity over the years. I'd take the character models from the game and pose them in a 3D program, then I'd place them on a background of photobashed images (photos mostly) then I'd slowly paint over the models and the background with brushstrokes, almost everything, from clothes, hair, lighting, color profile, even adding additional props and details. I can say it was really challenging, but very fun.
Once I moved away from this type of art and started drawing things more traditionally, I didn't understand the full value this kind of practice gave me until years later. Turns out using references extensively helps understand the 3D space, lighting, anatomy, and everything else lot better than trying to guess everything yourself haha
So I guess that would be my advice to anyone who's struggling or figuring things out (I'm still figuring things out!). Use references, whether it's 3D models, your own art, photos you take, etc. If it comes to a point where you no longer need them? Great! If you always need them? Also great!
Alright that concludes my lil art backstory and lesson you didn't ask for but hopefully enjoyed :) I'm off now to sketch out some very interesting Catras for you this week â¤ï¸
xoxo
