*Chapter 5: Save*
Added 2025-05-10 08:50:40 +0000 UTCGenerally speaking, Cody believed that no one is born evil. Maybe this rule had some exceptions in this world, but Victor Fries wasn't one of them.
He was originally a brilliant cryogenics expert, and his wife was his soulmate. But as Drake mentioned earlier, his wife also suffered from a terminal illness, and there was no effective treatment for it anywhere in the world.
He was an unyielding genius and a husband who deeply loved his wife. He wasn't beaten into despair by the situation; instead, he began researching his wife's illness, hoping to find a cure.
But his wife was already critically ill and didn't have much time left. Therefore, he used his talent and knowledge to build a high-tech freezing device for his wife. This freezing technology could suspend his wife's life state, buying him time for his research.
But just like the dark tone of Gotham itself, no matter how beautiful a story is, it will slide towards a terrible direction here. One day, the company funding Victor's research wanted to discontinue the experiment for profit reasons, leading to a fierce conflict with Victor.
This conflict caused a leak of gas from the freezing equipment in the room, resulting in a major accident. Victor miraculously survived the accident, but his cellular structure was also altered by it. His entire body became cold-blooded, requiring his body temperature to remain below zero degrees Celsius to survive. Contact with normal room temperature would kill him.
He specifically built a cryogenic suit for himself, as well as various ice weapons, and began to take revenge through killing on everyone involved in the accident. From then on, Gotham City had one more supervillain with a tragic life and lost a learned and talented cryogenics expert.
He continued to keep his wife frozen, still researching a way to cure her, obtaining funds to maintain the treatment through robbery or other means. He still lives in Gotham to this day. Despite this, he is still considered a relatively low-threat villain in Gotham City.

Bringing the focus back.
Cody sighed, "Do you have any beef with the doctor who gave you that suggestion?"
"...No, why do you ask?"
Cody was certain that Drake had seriously thought about his relationship with that doctor just now.
"Then do you know what Victor Fries' situation is right now?"
"I heard that after a lab accident, he and his wife disappeared."
Alright, thankfully, he hasn't made contact with Mr. Freeze yet. Otherwise, Cody would really start preparing to bail.
"So what are you planning to do?"
"I don't know. I finally managed to settle down here with my wife, but now I've lost all hope again."
Drake clutched his head, muttering almost hysterically in despair, "I don't know, I don't know. I just wanted to go out and grab some cash today so I could pay next month's medical bills..."
He sat dejectedly on the rooftop, suddenly bursting into tears and cursing, "And then I f**ing ran into you! I even f*ing believed your nonsense and thought you could help me, and I brought you home! I'm such an idiot, I can't save her, I'm a f**ing useless idiot... Boohoohoo..."
Cody didn't stop him. He had been suppressing his emotions under despair and immense pressure for too long. Letting out his emotions through crying was good for his mental recovery.
He pulled over another metal chair, casually wiped off the water stains on it, and sat down like Drake. The biting cold also penetrated his skin and went deep into his body, bringing a slight tingling sensation.
Looking at the blurry city lights in the distance, Cody sighed softly in the darkness.
The thinnest rope breaks first; bad luck always finds the struggling.

"Click."
The sound of a key turning in the lock echoed. The rusty iron door was pushed open, letting out a dry, creaking friction sound.
"Drake?"
Slow footsteps sounded. The person walking seemed to lack strength and wasn't moving quickly.
"Camilla, I'm back."
Cody and Drake entered the room together and saw a thin woman who had lost all her hair walking out from a room. She seemed very weak and needed to hold onto the walls of the house when she walked. Her - mental state also appeared listless. She seemed very surprised to see Cody. It wasn't until Drake finished the introductions that she gave Cody a kind smile.
She smiled very gently. Even though her body was so thin it was almost skin and bones and her face was so pale it had little color, from the look in her eyes and brows, you could vaguely tell she was once a very cheerful woman.
Looking at her, Cody estimated that she wouldn't have more than three months left, maybe even less. Of course, he had never studied medicine, but anyone who saw her could tell she didn't have long to live.
The inside of the house wasn't as dirty or messy as Cody had imagined; Drake had kept it very clean. Although the furniture and decorations left by the previous tenant were old, they were still usable. Drake and his wife seemed to have gotten used to living in this house and didn't show any verbal or physical signs of disliking the rental.
As Cody was looking around, he saw Mrs. Camilla slowly pull a handgun from behind her back and then put it back into a drawer in her room.
It was clear that if it hadn't been Drake who opened the door and came in just now, she would have likely been met with her gun barrel pointed at their head.
Cody felt relieved a few seconds after seeing the gun. After all, this was Gotham City, and this was a rental in the slums. Not carrying a gun when you're home or going out would be the biggest anomaly.
Speaking of which, was the gun in Drake's hand real or fake?
This thought suddenly popped into Cody's mind. Then he saw Drake walk into his bedroom, pull out the handgun he had used for the robbery, combine it with a handgun magazine from his pocket, and put them both into the drawer.
Alright, even though it was a real gun, at least when the muzzle was against his forehead, there was no magazine in the handgun.
No, thinking about it closely, it's still pretty annoying.
Cody looked at his system store. The beginner save point he purchased was still unused. If he took a bullet in this state, his legend of starting from scratch in another world could completely come to an end.
He thought about it a little more and immediately used the save point at the small house.
"Save point successfully used. This save point can be loaded twenty times, with no time limit. When you are about to enter a near-death state, you can choose to load this save point or abandon loading this save point."
"Please note that a maximum of five save points can exist simultaneously and can be canceled at any time."
"Please note that you can use funds to move the spatial-temporal coordinates of a save point or recover it."
