*Chapter 521: Let Me Wipe That for You*

In front of the floor-to-ceiling windows on the 26th floor, Luca crossed his arms, gazing out at the vibrant cityscape. The neon lights shimmered, and the streams of cars looked like streaks of light. It was beautiful.

"Maybe in a couple of years, when the real estate market recovers, I could follow Old Tom's example and buy a few more properties in Manhattan," Luca thought to himself, stroking his chin.

“What are you looking at?”

A stunning woman approached, carrying two glasses of red wine. Her blonde hair cascaded down her shoulders, and she wore a white blouse paired with a gray midi skirt that accentuated her slender waist and curvy figure.

“This place is incredible. Do you often stand here, looking at the view? Does it make you feel like a queen?” Luca asked as he took one of the glasses.

She chuckled lightly. “Not at all. Everyone calls me the ‘little princess,’ which basically means everything I have comes from my family. Without their support, what would I have left? But my dad, on the other hand, has always been ambitious. He’s dreamed of sitting on the throne for years.”

Luca smiled. “Your father’s done an amazing job. It’s not impossible for him to claim the crown someday.”

“You think he can do it?” She leaned against the railing, tilting her head as she looked at him.

“Of course. With a real princess in the family, how could he not be a king? It’s just a matter of time.”

She laughed again, raising her glass to toast. “My dad would be thrilled to hear that.”

Clink!

“Luca, can we talk about YouTube? If it weren’t for the media exposing it, I never would’ve guessed you were the one who founded it. You’re only 26—how are you so amazing?”

Her eyes sparkled as she stared at him. The wine had left a soft blush on her cheeks, making her even more enchanting.

“It’s not a big deal,” Luca said with a shrug. “I just had an idea, found a few good partners, invested a bit of money, and then YouTube was born. Like the newspapers say, ‘Luca’s just a lucky miner who stumbled upon a goldmine by accident and became a filthy rich upstart.’”

She giggled softly. “They’re just jealous of you. Jealous that at 26, you’ve already achieved so much—founder of YouTube, the world’s youngest billionaire.

“What annoys them even more is that you’re Brazilian! Honestly, sometimes I’m jealous too. You’re a year younger than me, yet you’ve already achieved financial freedom while I’m still relying on my family. While I’m still fighting to climb up, you’ve already reached the top of the pyramid, becoming someone everyone looks up to.

“Hey, Brazilian boy, tell me—why are you so amazing?”

Her playful glare and pouting expression made her look adorably feisty, tempting Luca to pinch her cheeks.

Luca smirked. “Eva, you’re a born princess. Why complain about an upstart like me?”

“Of course I’ll complain! We’re about the same age, and I had a head start. I wanted to compete with you, but before I even began, you were already at the summit. How can I not envy you?

“It’s not just me—every millennial must be jealous of you. Parents even use you as an example to scold their kids: ‘Look at Luca, the same age as you. He built his empire from scratch in just a few years. And what about you? Wasting your life?’

“Luca, do you hear that? Don’t you think you deserve a beating for being so annoyingly successful?”

Luca nodded. “Yeah, maybe a little.”

“Then can I hit you?” She playfully raised her fists.

“No, you’re Eva. How could you hit someone?”

“I don’t care. I’m going to hit you!” She playfully punched his shoulder a few times.

Afterward, she smiled brightly. “Ah, that feels much better.”

Luca chuckled. “So, you called me up here just because you’re mad at me and wanted to beat me up?”

“What else did you think I wanted?” She winked mischievously.

“Maybe to help me wipe the lipstick off my collar?” Luca said as he loosened his tie.

“Oh! I almost forgot!” She set down her wine glass, grabbing a napkin.

“Stand up. I’ll help you wipe it off,” she said with a twinkle in her eye.

“Alright.”

Luca stood up, spread his arms wide, and faced the captivating princess. With the dazzling Empire State Building’s lights behind him, he quietly gazed at her.

As she stepped into his embrace, standing on tiptoe and pulling on his collar, he felt her breath, the frantic pounding of her heart, and the burning heat on her cheeks.

He tilted his head, and his nose brushed against her hair, which carried the warm scent of datura.

The girl looked up, her forehead gently bumping his nose.

Their eyes met, and in that small, enclosed space, the temperature soared. A strange, intoxicating scent bewitched them, making them forget their restraint.

Leaning against the floor-to-ceiling window on the 26th floor, they clung tightly to each other.

Swoosh~

Downstairs in the lobby, Ed sat on a couch, typing on his phone to Nina.

He wrote, "There’s a bit of a situation at the party. I might be back late."

Nina replied, "Is it because of Luca?"

Ed said, "Can’t say, can’t say. As a professional agent, I mustn’t betray my client’s trust."

"Ugh, you’re such a pain. You deserve a punch," Nina texted back.

"True!" Ed grinned.

"You too!"

"..."

Ed rubbed his neck, feeling an inexplicable ache.

"Come back soon!"

"Yeah, yeah, I’ll call him now."

Ed set down his phone and checked his watch. It was 9:30 PM. Luca had gone upstairs over an hour ago—what on earth was he doing? Could it be that the two of them...?

Ed touched his face, imagining. Luca sure had guts, daring to flirt with the Tang family’s little princess. If old Mr. Tang found out, who knows how he’d react.

And Luca… wasn’t he supposed to be absurdly fertile? If she got pregnant—ha! Now that would be entertaining.

“Ed, what are you doing here?”

Mrs. Katie approached and asked.

“It’s too lively inside. I’m just taking a break out here,” Ed replied.

“And Luca? I only saw him at the beginning. Did he leave early?” Katie asked.

Ed shrugged. “Would you believe me if I said I don’t know?”

“Haha, fair enough. Ah, youth!” Katie chuckled and returned to the party.

Half an hour later, the crowd thinned as people began to leave. The party was nearing its end.

Ed checked his watch again, then pulled out his phone and hovered over Luca’s contact. Should he call? If he didn’t, going home late would definitely disrupt his family harmony. But if he called and interrupted Luca’s... activities, wouldn’t that affect his health?

“Ed, let’s go.”

A figure strode confidently out from under the lights. His clothes were tidy, his steps steady, and his posture perfect. He looked completely unfazed.

Could they really have been... innocent?

“Luca, want to shower before we head back?” Ed asked.

“No need. We just discussed work—nothing more,” Luca replied, his tone calm and collected.

“Oh~” Ed sniffed the air.

Yeah, right, he thought, almost believing it.

“Luca, your pants are on backward.”

“...”

Chapter 522: Filming Routine

After spending four days in New York, Luca flew to the Toronto set. This was his second time in the city, so he wasn’t unfamiliar with it.

The film’s set was located in Halton and Peel regions. With a modest budget of only $3 million, most of the scenes were shot within these two communities to save costs.

The movie had been filming for a week, starting with scenes featuring the female lead. The cast on set was relatively small, including Ellen Page, Michael Cera, J.K. Simmons, and a few supporting actors.

The first part of the story revolves around the protagonist, Juno, discovering her pregnancy and facing a series of dilemmas and choices: should she keep the baby and become a teenage mom, or opt for an abortion?

Luca didn’t have any scenes in this portion. Instead, he focused on his role as a producer after joining the crew. His days were filled with discussions with director Jason about shot setups and logistical tasks with Mr. Ross, leaving him busy and slightly on edge.

By the third week, actress Jennifer Garner arrived on set, and the crew began filming scenes involving her and Luca’s character.

Luca played Mark Loring, the second male lead—a charming and artistic man with a past as a band member who settled down to be a good husband.

Mark’s wife, Vanessa, is a strong-willed, accomplished professional. She’s eager to become a mother but hasn’t been able to conceive after years of marriage. The couple decides to place an ad seeking to adopt a child.

The protagonist, Juno, notices their ad and, believing the Lorings to be ideal candidates, visits their home accompanied by her father.

---

“Your ad in Penny Saver was interesting and classy. Unlike those with fake trees in the background. Honestly, only fools would fall for that,” Juno said.

“You found us through Penny Saver?” Vanessa asked.

“Hello, I’m Mark Loring!”

Mark, the man of the house, came down the stairs wearing a blue knit sweater.

“Mac MacGuff,” Juno’s father extended his hand.

“Nice to meet you.”

The two shook hands.

“This is our lawyer, Gerta Rauss,” Vanessa said as their lawyer stood up and introduced herself.

Clap!

Juno slapped the lawyer’s hand rudely.

“This is my daughter, Juno,” Mac said, his face darkening as he introduced her.

“Is she named after the city in Alaska?” Mark asked.

“No,” Juno replied flatly.

“She’s not?” Mark chuckled, then glanced at his wife, Vanessa. “Let’s all sit down and introduce ourselves.”

“Wait a moment; I’ll get some drinks. What would everyone like? We have pregnancy-safe San Pellegrino, vitamin water, and orange juice,” Vanessa offered.

“I’ll take a glass of bourbon, fill it to the top,” Juno quipped.

“What?”

“Haha, she’s just joking,” Mac quickly explained, embarrassed. “Juno has a great sense of humor—that’s one of her many good qualities.”

“Cut!”

“Good. Let’s prep for the next take,” Jason, the director, called out.

In these scenes, Ellen Page is undoubtedly the star. Her performance is natural, fun, and demonstrates a solid command of her lines—she’s clearly born to act.

However, it's puzzling why she chose to change her gender, transforming from a sweet girl into a young man. It felt a bit off during our interactions.

“Luca, is there something wrong with me?”

Across the sofa, the young woman nervously asked while looking up and down.

“No, Ellen, your performance is fantastic.”

Luca gave her a thumbs-up. “Seeing you reminds me of when I first started out. Directors used to stop me constantly—sometimes two or three times, other times more than ten. Rarely did I nail a shot in one go. Watching your performance, I can see the difference between a natural talent and a lack of it.”

“Mr. Kelly, you’re too modest!”

Ellen Page chuckled.

“Indeed, Luca. Ellen is very talented, but your talent isn’t lacking either. Would you have achieved this much success if you didn’t have talent?”

Mr. Simmons chimed in.

“Well, maybe it’s because I have to shoot multiple takes. Directors usually find the best one among them, though that wastes a lot of film.”

Luca shrugged.

“That doesn’t mean you lack talent. Look, see that mirror over there?”

Ms. Jennifer Garner smiled as she pointed.

Luca raised an eyebrow. “What do I see? Myself?”

“Exactly! Being handsome is a talent, isn’t it?”

Jennifer laughed.

“Ha, Jennifer is right!”

The others burst into laughter.

“Alright, I guess I overlooked that. But in terms of appearance, all of you are pretty talented too.”

“Absolutely! I was quite the looker in my youth—just as handsome as Luca.”

“Really? Hard to imagine!”

“Hahaha!”

After some jokes, the crew continued filming.

---

“I think we should discuss the adoption—what’s the next step?”

Mark Loring asked.

“What’s there to discuss? I’ll just push the kid out and hand it over to you,” Juno gestured dramatically.

“No, Mark and Vanessa are open to an open adoption agreement,” the lawyer explained.

“Wait, what does that mean?”

Old Mac asked.

“It means they’re willing to send you photos and updates every year so Juno can keep up with the child’s life,” the lawyer clarified.

“Oh, no, no, no. I don’t want photos or updates. Can’t we just go the traditional route? Like putting the baby in a basket and handing it over to you—like Moses in the reeds?”

Juno suggested.

“You could also call it the ‘Old Testament method,’ right?”

Mark joked.

“Exactly! Can we do that? It’s quick and easy.”

Juno grinned.

“Does everyone agree to this traditional, discreet adoption?”

The lawyer inquired.

“Of course! Let’s do it.”

Juno decided.

---

After finishing for the day, the crew wrapped up, and Luca reviewed the day’s footage with the director. It looked great. Ellen Page brought a lot of cleverness and charm to her role, adding depth to her character.

Luca, alongside Jennifer Garner and Mr. Simmons, each brought their unique qualities—handsomeness, beauty, and humor—that highlighted the lead’s brilliance.

“Alright, that’s a wrap!”

Luca donned his jacket and walked out of the set with his hands in his pockets. His assistant, Annie, followed closely like a shadow.

It was getting late, and they debated dinner plans. Luca suggested steak, but Annie objected, saying it was too greasy and bad for maintaining a healthy figure. She proposed desserts, fruits, or fish instead. Luca argued those were “girl foods.” Their debate dragged on without resolution.

Beep beep!

A silver-gray sedan honked at the curb. The window rolled down, revealing a cheerful smile.

“Hey, Luca! Need a ride?”

“Rachel? What are you doing here?”

Luca was surprised.

“Visiting the set. Surprised?”

Rachel smirked.

“Very surprised!”

Luca smiled and got in the car.

“Annie, grab dinner on your own—desserts, ice cream, whatever. Put it on my tab!”

“Alright, boss!”

Watching the car disappear into the distance, Annie frowned. Luca and Rachel? Their relationship seemed suspicious. Why hadn’t Ed or Tony flagged this? Was there a risk with them dining together? She considered calling Tony but held back, deciding to ask her boss about it later.

She glanced around and walked into a dessert shop, ordering two signature treats.

The taste was excellent. Having a boss who might be a bit of a jerk wasn’t all bad—at least he was generous with the ladies.

*Chapter 523: Rachel's Dinner*

“Rachel, is your shoot finished?”

In Rachel’s apartment, the dining table was set with the dishes she had prepared. Luca asked while eating.

“Yes, I’ve been taking some courses at school recently.”

Rachel sat across from him, propping her chin up with both hands, quietly staring at him. Her lips curved into a sweet smile.

“What are you studying?”

Luca inquired.

“Acting, literature, accounting, computers, and so on.”

“Why study those? Your acting is already top-notch.”

Luca remarked.

“I used to think I was exceptional, but after going to Hollywood, I realized there are so many talented people there. Take, for example, some billionaire website founders who still take on minor roles in productions. Compared to them, I don’t have much of an edge. So, I decided to take a break, improve myself, and reset a little.”

Rachel shrugged.

“Taking a break isn’t a bad idea.”

Luca glanced at her face, fair and rosy, her smile radiant. “We haven’t seen each other in six months, and you’re more charming than ever.”

“Haha, should I return the compliment? You...”

Rachel blinked and laughed. “You haven’t changed a bit—the same eyes, same nose, same mouth, same mischievous smile. Just like in my dreams.”

“Really?”

Luca set down his knife and fork, cupped the back of her head, and gave her a long kiss.

“How about this? Is it the same?”

He let go, smiling.

Rachel opened her eyes. “Not the same—this time it tastes like seasoning.”

Luca chuckled softly. “Do you mind?”

“Yes!”

Rachel laughed. “The flavor isn’t strong enough.”

“Agreed.”

Luca took her hand and led her in a small circle around the table before embracing her gently.

Mmm~

Dinner stretched from sunset to twilight. After eating, the two lounged on the sofa, chatting intimately while the TV buzzed in the background.

“Rachel, is there anything I can do for you? Whether it’s life or work—oh, I’m not trying to interfere. I just want to help.”

Luca spoke softly.

“I know what you mean, and I didn’t misunderstand. It’s just that I don’t need help for now. Hmm, actually, that’s not true. I do need your help.”

Rachel leaned on his shoulder, looking up at him with a smile. “How about coming over every weekend to keep me company? I want to cook for you.”

“Of course. I can’t get enough of your cooking.”

Luca kissed her.

“Haha, it’s a deal then! I’ll be looking forward to weekends even more now.”

“Me too!”

The TV screen flickered, but the sofa was empty. In the bedroom, the TV began to hum with noise again.

After a wonderful afternoon at Rachel’s, Luca returned to the set in high spirits. From then on, as promised, he spent every weekend afternoon at her place, enjoying her meals.

“Boss, Ed wants me to report your whereabouts weekly, but I have no idea where you go on weekends. What should I tell him?”

Assistant Anne asked.

“Do you really need to ask? Someone as smart as you should know what to do.”

Luca replied sternly.

“Fine!”

Anne sighed inwardly. Another lie for my playboy boss. At this rate, will I become a professional liar someday?

“Kelley, we’re ready for the next scene.”

The stage manager called out.

“Got it!”

Luca set down his cup and walked onto the set.

“Scene 12, Shot 3, Take 1. Action!”

The clapperboard snapped, and the performance began.

---

“Excuse me, is that a Les Paul guitar?”

Juno asked.

“Yes, Vanessa cleared out a room for me just to store my stuff.”

Mark chuckled.

"She’s letting you move your stuff into your own house? She sure runs a tight ship," he joked.

Juno laughed.

"Cut!"

“Luca, you’ll be playing the guitar in the next scene. How’s your guitar practice coming along?” Jason, the director, asked.

“It’s just for show. I think I can manage,” Luca replied, picking up the guitar from the corner of the room.

“Great! Your character used to be in a band, so try to make your finger movements as natural as possible,” Jason said.

“Got it!”

Luca strummed the guitar strings to test the sound. Feeling satisfied, he started playing a short intro. It wasn’t perfect, but it had the right vibe.

“Awesome! You could totally be a rock star,” Jason said with a thumbs-up.

“Thanks! If things don’t work out for me in Hollywood, maybe I’ll give it a shot,” Luca joked.

“Haha, you not making it in Hollywood? Yeah, right!” Jason chuckled as he walked back to the director’s area.

“Luca, you must be a pro at guitar, right? You’re a renowned songwriter,” Ellen Page said.

“Not really. I just write lyrics and hand them off to Britney. We work on the melodies together, and I picked up the guitar from her,” Luca said with a smile.

“Wow! That sounds romantic. Honestly, when I heard Britney was pregnant, I thought you two might end up together,” Ellen teased.

Luca shrugged. “We are together.”

“Oh, okay!” Ellen laughed, rubbing her fake baby bump. “Luca, did Britney and Lima being pregnant influence your decision to work on this movie?”

“Not at all. I got the script from Ms. Cody back in ’05 and decided to shoot the film then,” Luca explained.

“I see.”

After some casual chatting, they began filming the music scene.

Juno, heavily pregnant, arrived at Mark’s house. With Vanessa away, the two talked about music and danced together.

“I’m thinking about leaving Vanessa,” Mark said while holding Juno as they danced.

“What?” Juno exclaimed.

“Leaving here, finding a place in the city. Honestly, I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” Mark confessed.

“No, you can’t.”

“Can’t?”

“Yes, you absolutely can’t do that. It would be a huge mistake,” Juno said firmly.

“Why not?”

“I mean, didn’t you and Vanessa agree to adopt my baby together?” Juno said.

“I thought you’d take this better,” Mark replied.

“Take it better? Are you kidding? I want your family to be perfect, not a mess like so many others,” Juno said, shaking her head. “Look, I’ll have the baby, Vanessa will be thrilled, and all you need to do is—”

“A baby can’t fix everything. And honestly, I don’t know if I’m ready to be a father,” Mark admitted.

“But you’re not exactly young anymore,” Juno pointed out.

“No!” Mark shook his head.

“Is this all because of me? Is Vanessa mad at you because of me?”

“No, it’s not about you. It’s about me and Vanessa—we’re not in love anymore.”

“Why? If you loved each other before, can’t you just love each other again? Please, do me a favor and don’t divorce Vanessa,” Juno pleaded.

Mark shook his head. “You don’t understand. You’re still too young.”

“I’m not a kid, okay? I’m 16! I can see when someone’s being a jerk,” Juno snapped, grabbing her coat and storming out.

Luca sighed, feeling like he had unintentionally taken on yet another “jerk” role.

With that scene wrapped, Luca’s part in the film was mostly done. He stayed in Toronto for another two weeks to oversee production as a producer.

Once most of the principal photography was complete, his supervisory duties ended.

Before returning to the U.S., he spent a few wild days with Rachel.

They went jogging together at dawn, visited Niagara Falls, explored a snowy wonderland, and strolled along the lakefront’s melon farms (though there weren’t any watermelons). They even holed up in a room together for two days and nights.

On a tender morning, he kissed Rachel goodbye and left Toronto behind.

(End of chapter)

*Chapter 524: Why Are You So Surprised About Us Getting Married?*

"Luca, do you really enjoy winter swimming?"

"Oh? Why do you ask?"

"Isn't it obvious? According to the itinerary Anne gave me, every weekend afternoon while we're in Toronto, you go swimming in the lake. Isn't that true?"

Ed held up a document as he spoke.

Luca tugged at the corner of his mouth, at a loss for words.

Last time, his assistant Anne mentioned that Ed had asked her to report on Luca's schedule while he was on set. Since he always disappeared on weekend afternoons and didn’t want to explain, he told her to make something up. Unexpectedly, straightforward Anne had written that he went swimming in the lake. Winter lake swimming, of all things—it sounded extreme.

"Yes, Ed, I love swimming, especially in winter. Winter swimming is great for your health," Luca said, looking down at the pool beneath him.

"Alright then. Winter swimming is indeed exciting, but you'd better take all the necessary safety precautions before diving in. We wouldn’t want any accidents—remember, you're a big shot now," Ed said.

Hmm?

Why did that sound like it had a double meaning? Could Ed have figured something out?

Luca shook his head. "Ed, let's skip that. Why are you here?"

"Right. The auditions for The Dark Knight are over. The lead role has been given to Christian Bale, and the second lead to Heath Ledger. The production team invited you to make a cameo as a police officer. Are you interested?"

"They went with Heath Ledger, huh?"

Luca felt a twinge of regret. A few days ago, he’d been back in Los Angeles to audition for The Dark Knight. His goal had been to take Heath Ledger’s role as the Joker, hoping to spare him from the psychological toll of playing the character.

Unfortunately, he hadn't succeeded.

"I prepared for over a month for that role. I thought I gave a pretty good performance," Luca said.

"The casting team apparently preferred Heath Ledger's interpretation," Ed replied.

"Alright then. A cameo it is," Luca agreed with a nod.

Ed made a note of it, and the two began discussing plans for the upcoming Oscars.

Half a month ago, the Oscar nominations had been announced.

Luca had received two nominations.

The Departed had earned five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Little Miss Sunshine had received four nominations: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

For the Best Picture nomination, three producers were listed: Luca, Mr. Ross, and Ms. Valerie Faris.

Additionally, The Tuner was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film, earning Luca and Billy a nod.

"Luca, of these nominations, Best Short Film seems to have the best shot," Ed said.

"No shot at all. It’s a French film that already won Best Short at Cannes. The Academy voters won't want to align their tastes with Cannes. I'm just here for the show," Luca replied with a shake of his head.

"Fair enough. There are plenty of casting calls for upcoming projects. Are you taking any more scripts?"

Luca thought for a moment. "I can take one more. Wanted starts shooting in April and will take about three months. Inglourious Basterds begins production in the second half of the year, which will also be about three months. I can squeeze in another project."

"Got it!"

The following afternoon at 5 PM, the 79th Annual Academy Awards took place at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Luca, dressed in a sharp suit, once again walked the red carpet.

"Think anyone will throw tomatoes at me this time?" Luca asked as he stepped out of the car.

"Probably not, but be careful anyway. You still have plenty of haters in America," Tony quipped.

"Mr. Kelly, I brought an umbrella. Want to use it?" Anne offered, pulling one out of her bag.

"Haha, great idea! Add a lightning rod, and you'd be totally secure," Tony laughed uncontrollably.

"Shut up, both of you. I'm going in."

Luca adjusted his suit and strode confidently onto the red carpet. As luck would have it, walking just ahead of him was Leonardo DiCaprio, nominated this year for Best Actor in Blood Diamond.

"Hey, Leo!"

Luca waved and walked toward him.

Seeing him, Leonardo's face darkened. Ignoring the greetings of the camera crew, he turned and walked straight into the Kodak Theatre.

"That guy..."

Luca smirked slightly.

"Luca, do you have a grudge with Leonardo? Why did he ignore you?"

A reporter called out.

"Of course not, we get along pretty well. He probably didn’t hear me just now."

"No, he heard you," said another reporter.

"Really? Then you should ask him why he ignored me, not me," Luca replied with a smile.

"I know—Leo's worried about getting hit with tomatoes!"

"Haha!"

After answering a few more questions, Luca left the interview area.

"Hey, Luca!"

Ryan Gosling caught up to him from behind.

"Ryan, congratulations!"

Luca stopped and gave him a quick hug. This year, Ryan had been nominated for Best Actor for his outstanding performance in Half Nelson.

"Luca, congratulations to you too, on your Producer and Best Short Film Director nominations," Ryan said.

"Thank you!"

As they embraced, the photographers' cameras clicked incessantly.

After taking a few pictures, the two of them walked into the Kodak Theatre together.

The Oscars ceremony was lively and glamorous, with many A-list actresses present: Penélope Cruz, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Eva Green, and more. However, there weren’t many familiar faces around for Luca.

After mingling for a while, he made his way over to the Little Miss Sunshine team. There were over ten people in the group: Mr. Ross, Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris, Abigail Breslin, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Alan Arkin, nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and screenwriter Michael Arndt, among others.

"Luca, thank you," Mr. Ross said.

"Thank me?"

Luca was surprised. "Mr. Ross, thank me for what?"

Looking at the bustling crowd and glittering stars in the venue, Mr. Ross said, "This is my first time attending the Oscars. It’s you who gave me this opportunity."

"You’re being too kind. This is something you deserve," Luca replied, shaking his head.

Mr. Ross smiled. "More than ten years ago, I left Hollywood and returned to teaching. I thought I’d never come back, but here I am, and this time it’s even grander than the first. Thank you, Luca. It’s because of your help that I’ve been able to experience a second spring in my career."

"Alright, I’ll take that thank-you. But I should thank you as well—for helping me manage Bra Films," Luca said.

Mr. Ross shook his head and sighed, "The company is great, but the name is just too frivolous."

"What’s the big deal? It’s easy to remember," Luca chuckled. At some point, the media had started referring to Bra Films as “Bra Company,” and the nickname stuck. People who didn’t know better thought it was a lingerie brand.

"Luca, Nia and I are planning to get married soon. We’d love for you to attend our wedding," Mr. Ross said.

"What? You and Professor Nia are getting married?"

Luca was astonished.

"Why are you so surprised? Is it so strange for us to get married?"

"Yes, because Professor Nia is so amazing—"

"What’s that supposed to mean? Are you saying I’m not amazing?" Mr. Ross asked, feigning a scowl.

"No, you’re amazing too. You two coming together must be fate—a perfect match. Congratulations, Ross. You’re not just enjoying a second spring in your career but also in love. Jenny and I will definitely attend your wedding," Luca said.

"Thank you. By the way, when are you planning to get married? You’re 26, and you already have four kids."

"Stop! This is the Oscars, not a wedding intervention!" Luca felt a headache coming on.

"Alright, I just hope you cherish what you have now. Don’t wait until you’re older to realize who’s truly worth treasuring," Mr. Ross said earnestly.

"I understand," Luca nodded.

Clap, clap, clap—

The lights in the venue dimmed. A spotlight shone on the stage as an energetic opening dance performance began. Afterward, The Tonight Show host Ellen DeGeneres took the stage, and the awards ceremony officially began.

(End of Chapter)

Chapter 525: Cornered Once Again

“Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, and welcome to the Oscars! Tonight, I see many familiar faces—Helen, Judi, Meryl, Leo... Oh, and Luca! Hey, Luca, it’s been a while since we’ve heard any scandals about you. Are you planning to settle down?”

“Hahaha~”

Ellen’s words sparked laughter across the room.

Luca’s reputation as a playboy was well-known in the industry, and combined with his billionaire status, the joke landed perfectly.

Facing the camera, Luca gave a slight, somewhat awkward smile.

Listening to jokes from the audience was enjoyable, but being the punchline of the opening gag was less so. Still, considering their shared awkward dance moment on a previous show, he could only grin and bear it.

“Luca, congratulations on receiving two nominations again this year—Best Picture and Best Short Film Director. Adding to last year’s Best Screenplay Award, are you always this... prolific?”

When she said "prolific," Ellen used a term more commonly associated with childbirth.

The audience burst into laughter and applause, glancing knowingly in a certain direction.

Given Britney and Lima’s recent pregnancies, along with rumors that Luca was the biological father of Aniston’s twins, the "prolific" jab hit home.

Luca maintained his composure, offering an elegant smile and applause.

“Leo! I heard you got engaged last year—congratulations! Welcome to the family man club.”

“Hahaha~”

The playful dig at Leo drew another round of laughter and cheers.

Ellen went on to name-drop several big stars—Will Smith, Kate Winslet, and Tom Cruise. Incidentally, Tom had also tied the knot with Katie Holmes last year, prompting Ellen to dub it the “Year of Family Reunions.”

The Awards Ceremony

After warming up the crowd, the ceremony officially began, with 26 awards to be presented. The evening kicked off with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and the Scientific and Technical Achievement Award.

Italian composer Ennio Morricone received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his iconic film scores, including The Legend of 1900 and Once Upon a Time in America.

The Humanitarian Award went to Sherry Lansing, the first woman to head a major Hollywood studio. During her 13-year tenure as Paramount’s chairperson, she helped launch numerous stars, including Tom Cruise.

When Tom and Lansing shared a dance onstage, Luca joined in the applause, envying the mentor-student bond they shared.

By the time the sixth award for Best Live Action Short Film was announced, West Coast Story emerged as the winner, celebrated for its quintessential American style.

The seventh award, Best Supporting Actress, saw little Abigail Breslin nominated for her performance in Little Miss Sunshine. Though she didn’t win, the young actress took it in stride, smiling brightly throughout.

When the ninth award for Best Supporting Actor came around, Little Miss Sunshine finally secured its first trophy.

Veteran actor Alan Arkin, 74 years old, took the stage to accept the award. After five decades in the industry, this was his first Oscar win. Shaking with emotion, he read from his speech, thanking everyone involved in the production. Since Luca had dual roles as both producer and supporting actor, he earned two shoutouts, prompting cheers from the audience.

Backstage with Anne

When the tenth award, Best Original Screenplay, approached, Luca left his seat for the backstage area. As last year’s winner, he was set to present this year’s award alongside Anne Hathaway.

“Hey, Luca, ready to settle down and become a family man?”

On the way, he encountered Anne, dressed elegantly in a black off-shoulder gown. Flashing a dazzling smile, she teased him.

“Hey, Anne, this is my first time presenting an award. I’ll be relying on you up there.”

“First time? I remember you presented at the 2005 Oscars.”

Anne raised an eyebrow with a playful smirk.

“Oh, that was for Best Original Song. You’ve got a great memory,” Luca said with a thumbs-up.

Anne shook her head. “So many excuses. Are you just trying to dodge my question?”

“Dodge? What are you talking about?” Luca feigned confusion.

“I asked if you’re ready to settle down and be a good man. You haven’t answered yet,” Anne said, fluttering her long lashes with a mischievous smile.

“Answer? Do I even need to? I’ve always been a good man. What’s there to settle down from?” Luca replied, feigning seriousness.

“Good man? Ha! Miranda says being around you for too long could get someone pregnant.”

Anne suddenly took a step back, lifting her gown slightly as if to distance herself.

“...”

Luca wiped his forehead. “Anne, I used to think you were as graceful as a princess. I never expected you to be so witty, charming, and sweet.”

“Flattery won’t get you anywhere. What do you want?” Anne asked suspiciously.

“Nothing much. Just thought we could have a child together,” Luca joked, nudging her playfully.

Anne burst into laughter. “Nice try. I only have kids with my boyfriend.”

“Really? I envy Mr. Follieri. He must’ve saved the world in his past life to deserve someone as amazing as you.”

Anne gave him a sidelong glance. “Are you hitting on me, Mr. Playboy?”

“Not at all!”

Straightening his suit, Luca said, “Anne, the previous presenters are done. Time for us to grab the award card.”

“Hmph.”

With a playful nudge, Anne swept past him, holding up her gown as she strode confidently toward the backstage area.

Luca smiled faintly as he gazed at her smooth, fair back. Suddenly, an idea struck him—he wanted to try cupping therapy on her.

After collecting the Best Screenwriter award statuette backstage, along with a mysterious card, the two of them headed to the stage. Since their earlier conversation had fallen apart, they hadn’t spoken a word to each other, like two strangers.

“And now, the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay goes to…”

The nominees were five films: Little Miss Sunshine, Babel, Letters from Iwo Jima, Pan’s Labyrinth, and The Queen.

“Luca, as last year’s winner for Best Original Screenplay, how did you feel onstage then?” Anne Hathaway asked him with a bright smile.

“Excited, like I was dreaming,” Luca replied, smiling but staying on guard.

“Yes, I remember. Onstage last year, you said something rather dreamy—you wished Kate would tug on your ear again. Has that dream come true?”

At the mention of this inside joke, laughter erupted from the audience.

“Um…” Luca picked up the envelope. “Let’s continue with the award, shall we?”

“Luca, answer Anne’s question!” someone shouted.

“No, let’s leave some suspense for the Oscars. When I win Best Actor, I’ll tell you the answer,” Luca replied smoothly.

“You? Win Best Actor? Oh, I guess I’ll never know the answer then,” Anne said dramatically, clutching her chest with mock disappointment.

The audience burst into laughter.

Luca pretended to be annoyed and opened the card containing the winner’s name. He handed it to Anne Hathaway. “You do it!” he said, feigning irritation.

Anne laughed. “Alright, the winner of the 79th Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay is…”

She handed the card back to him.

Luca glanced at it and smiled. “Little Miss Sunshine! Michael Arndt, congratulations!”

Applause filled the room.

This award was an interesting one. Luca had won Best Original Screenplay the previous year, and this year, a film he produced and acted in took the same award. Such coincidences were rare in Oscar history.

Some even whispered that the Academy might favor Luca a bit too much. Year after year, he kept showing up at the Oscars; it was impossible not to see him.

Michael Arndt went up on stage and gave Luca a big, emotional hug.

Holding the statuette, Michael’s hands trembled with excitement.

His screenplay had been passed around Hollywood for five years, rejected by three companies. But everything changed when it landed in the hands of Luca’s “Bra Films.” Investment, production, release, over $100 million at the box office, and now an Oscar—this was the ultimate underdog success story.

Michael, overwhelmed, thanked many people in his speech. He recalled how, after another rejection in 2004, he nearly gave up. But then a mutual friend, Mr. Ross, took his script and promised to show it to someone. That person turned out to be Luca.

Luca had immediately decided to buy the script and produce the film. Michael admitted he didn’t believe it at first, thinking it was yet another cycle of hope and disappointment. To his surprise, the project was greenlit within a month.

Michael’s heartfelt gratitude made Luca a little embarrassed as he stood there, smiling modestly.

“Luca, how did you know this script would be a hit?” Anne Hathaway asked as they walked offstage.

“I didn’t,” Luca admitted, “but I knew that any movie I produce will be great. If it’s a Luca production, it’s bound to be top-notch.”

“Pfft.” Anne rolled her eyes at his confidence. As they turned a corner in the hallway, she suddenly asked, “Want to grab a smoke together?”

“I don’t smoke,” Luca replied.

“Come on,” Anne said, pulling him into a small side room. “Do you have any cigarettes?”

“I told you, I don’t smoke. Why would I have cigarettes?” Luca laughed.

“Well, I don’t have any either. What now?” Anne patted her elegant gown helplessly.

“Just hold out until the ceremony’s over. You can go out then.”

“No way. I can’t wait,” Anne said. Suddenly, she pushed Luca against the wall.

“What are you doing?” Luca was startled.

“I know a way to suppress nicotine cravings. Want to try it?” she asked, her eyes sparkling mischievously.

“Huh? What way?”

Ten minutes later, Anne emerged from the room, looking completely refreshed. “Thanks, Luca!” she said with a smile.

“I can’t believe you’d do that to me,” Luca muttered, shaking his head.

“Don’t be mad. If you ever need help quitting smoking, you can come to me, and I’ll return the favor,” Anne teased, bumping his shoulder.

“No thanks. With my stunning good looks, you’d be the one benefiting,” Luca retorted.

“You’re shameless,” Anne said, rolling her eyes.

“Thanks. Being shameless is my specialty,” Luca quipped, striding away confidently.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to return the favor?” Anne called after him.

“Fine. Next time, I’ll let you take advantage of me again,” Luca waved dismissively.

“Ugh, you’re such a tsundere,” Anne muttered, laughing to herself. She crouched down, laughing so hard she had to catch her breath.

After a while, she adjusted her outfit and makeup in the mirror, applied a bit of lip gloss, and transformed back into the elegant princess everyone adored. She glided back into the audience as the next award was announced.

“And the Oscar for Best Picture goes to…”
