Sacred Symbols, Episode 381 | Watch It Fly By As the Pendulum Swings

Time sure is moving, but has a sufficient amount of it passed for us to start considering the next generation of PlayStation console? According to two reliable leakers, the answer is yes: Sony is very much aiming to get PS6 out in 2027. This makes sense by historical standards -- seven years between consoles is fairly normal, if not even a little slow -- but it really doesn't feel like we need this thing. Or do we? By 2027, who knows what our ecosystem might look like. Let's discuss! Plus: Legendary Tecmo director and producer Tomonobu Itagakai has sadly passed away, Sony-owned studio Bluepoint is hiring for a mysterious third-person action project, San Diego Studio appears primed to finally bring its smash-hit MLB: The Show series to PC, Ghost of Yotei is selling at parity with Ghost of Tsushima, we could have very easily gotten a mobile The Last of Us game, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Do we like to partake in New Game+, when applicable? With Xbox's displacement as a hardware competitor, is Sony and Nintendo's long-standing rivalry primed to be reignited? Why don't we talk more about the fighting scene? Will Dustin regale us with some of his Japanese language skills?

Phenomenal discourse gentleman. Colin I want to pushback on the Bungie acquisition and the cancellation of factions . I understand how you feel but it's not Bungie's fault that naughty dog had no idea what they were doing and didn't fundamentally understand what it would take to develop and maintain a live service game. Factions not coming out is ALL on PlayStations incompetence. Bungie just told Naughty Dog what Sony somehow didn't know and couldn't comprehend. Way in over their heads as you've stated prior before.

Sony's Babyface turn end of PS3 to PS4 was 100% Microsoft keeping Sony honest. They've slowly being tilting towards arrogant Sony since then imo because of Xbox's weak competition since the 360 era. It's madness to suggest Sony wouldn't be more consumer friendly if Xbox was much bigger

Colin, I hope this makes you feel old - the Lions going 0-16 “maybe ten years ago” was in fact 17 years ago, back in 2008. Bush famously blamed them for the economy collapsing.

I’ve had three that have the left stick spin in circles with little to no resistance. Like my thumb just slides off and it rotates on its own.

I bought my PS5 about 6 months after launch, my controller got drift like 2 weeks after, I tried to get it replaced at my local eb games, and they told me there essentially was no recourse. I live in New Zealand so understandably it would be more difficult, but honestly it was a huge bummer, and kind of soured me on the duel sense as this has never happened to me so quickly. I bought a pink one online about 2 months after and the same thing happened again. Thankfully the online store replaced it no issues

Putting Bluepoint on anything besides remakes/remasters is insane to me. It reminds me of EA pushing BioWare into live service. PlayStation can have them get a remake out every 2-3 years for an almost guaranteed return but instead they waste their time making a live service game then try to transition them into making a spinoff.

Regarding the NG+ talk: I'm of the opinion games generally shouldn't lock their "true" or "best" endings behind NG+. If you're going to require multiple playthroughs to actually see what the story has to say, then that's no longer really NG+, that's part of the main game itself. Maybe that's just a semantic thing, though—I think it'd feel more palatable to me if repeat playthroughs with different endings were called "routes" or "alternate storylines" rather than just "New Game Plus." and yeah, the Silent Hill games have always had multiple endings, but the difference is that in the original series (1-4) you could always achieve the "best" ending in the first playthrough, and NG+ was primarily reserved for silly/joke endings involving UFOs and dogs and whatnot. Silent Hill F is a clear divergence from that. Thankfully I think it's mostly okay, given the enhancements that NG+ provides in SHF, but I still don't really love it—it feels a mite disrespectful of the player's time. (At least it's not Nier Replicant, though. Those multiple playthroughs were...painful.)
