Sacred Symbols+, Episode 472 | It's Time to Talk About PlayStation 6

Please welcome Tom from Moore's Law is Dead and the Broken Silicon podcast back to Sacred+. When we've had Tom on in the past, it's to leverage his deep knowledge of tech, and this time around, I (Colin) invited him back to Sacred+ for a similar reason. But now, Tom comes packing a series of explosive exclusives that he's recently broken on his shows, giving us the very first glimpse into just what PlayStation 6 is. Codenamed Orion, PS6 seems aimed to be a mass market machine that may somehow be substantially cheaper than PS5 Pro is now, all while aiming for 4K resolutions and 120 frames-per-second. Meanwhile, PS6 is also slated for a handheld iteration, codenamed Canis. And Tom thinks there may even be a "PS6 S" in the works, too, all ready for a potential 2027 launch. So let's discuss all of that, and get into his Xbox leaks, too, surrounding their new machine codenamed Magnus. How will these two ecosystems shape-up, compete, and chase new audiences? Which is more powerful? And perhaps most importantly, which has the best chance at success?

Best content spewed out lately. Yeah I said it, come get me bro…you won’t

This episode was fantastic. Had no idea why they were doing such a shit job with PS3 emulation, but the super interesting idea is to "launch into a recession" plan with a budget console then give options. These are the exact type of deep dive and long look conversations I want from a channel like this.

Devon McCarty

Welcome Tom. I’m personally not clamoring for a PS6 yet, but it’s cool to hear what’s coming down the pipeline.

MrFreundly

These conversations are always so fascinating, happy to see Tom on here again!

Joe Perez

Also - I find it hard to believe the PS6 would be so cheap. Happy to be proven wrong

TheMuff1nMon

I’m confused why Tom is acting like Xbox is pricing the Ally X? AFAIK. They are ASUS devices made by ASUS, priced by ASUS just like the current Ally X. Xbox just supplies the OS, like how Steam gave Lenovo the OS for the Steam Legion Go.

TheMuff1nMon

Helldivers 2 will make more money than every single SP game sony releases this gen.... Combined.

Jacob Lesperance

Loved this episode! Tom never gets enough credit for his leaks. You guys go so well together.

Matt Kuryloski

I truly appreciated this episode. So much valuable insight. Will definitely be checking out Tom’s YT channel daily from now on.

Sony is no white night - I agree nobody should act like they are one, and I am glad I didn't. Who did by the way? Was this comment meant for a different thread?

Moore's Law Is Dead

PlayStation will always have competition from Nintendo, PC, Valve, and frankly also XBOX at least for the next gen. If PlayStation priced a weaker console at $1000 (for example), then people would just go to PC. Sony doesn't want that because most of the money they make is in software. That remains a fact even if XBOX leaves the market entirely. Or, let me put it another way - the PS1 absolutely destroyed the competition to a comical degree...and yet the PS2 was also priced very aggressively. And why? Because Sony makes its money off of software sales. Even if XBOX stops directly competing with PlayStation, Sony will need to continue to offer something compelling every gen that will get its people to upgrade and keep paying money for the latest games.

Moore's Law Is Dead

Yes, they had to slightly modify the control scheme and resell you the games lol. It was PORTED to the 360! That was not "emulation" or "backwards compatibility" - that was a few guys in a cubicle spending hours making that game work on 360. The same needs to be done for any PS3 game with pressure sensitive controls to work fully on PS4, PS5, or PS6.

Moore's Law Is Dead

Anytime these guys get together its an awesome conversation. I really like stelly but since that has gone away I can fit Tom's podcast in every week now unlike where I had to try to fit it into my work week somehow beforehand.

mattyboy316

I’m all in on the console and handheld for PS6. I use my portal every night, it’s amazing! I love these conversations on next gen. Keep it coming!

Van B Boy

There is an option to not get your money back for Game Pass and keep it until the expiry date. But obviously most people will just take the refund. Very strange to offer this though I agree.

Wesali

If the 6 is stronger than the Pro and cheaper, I’ll never buy a Pro again. 😅

NeO JD

I was salivating at the 1:07 mark, I love the ps3 generation. Raytracing for ps3 gen? Full library released? Holy fuck.

Frank G.

I really enjoyed this discussion and like Tom, but there’s no reason for Sony to risk making a console close to breaking even when there’s virtually no competition. It doesn’t make sense.

WhatDarrenPlays

Smart. I'm on xbox and i"M also thinking "why would I buy the next xbox when i could just invest into a pc?"

Guybrush Threepwood

Yeah, that sounded sweet! I would get my 1st playstation console if what he is saying is accurate.

Guybrush Threepwood

Amazing to hear Sony be given every benefit of the doubt with regards to low PS6 and handheld pricing to consumers, under the basis of “they’ll have the market to themselves, so they’ll just flood it.” Like somehow having less competition is going will spur management to lower prices? That doesn’t make business sense for a company that’s charging a premium on whatever it can now. Feels like a fanboy argument to paint this company as a white knight, instead of the “Apple-like” entity everyone constantly describes it as.

Fenixrisingxl21

Gene sucks cuz he works for the Washington post. Hate him for that.

Pigbaby

You're a sub.

Pigbaby

I hope Tom is right on PS6 pricing.

Jeremy Shook

Speaking of PS6 remasters and the PS6 increased ray-tracing capabilities, I would kill for WipeOut remasters and a new WipeOut game. With the power of the PS6 it could probably do 4K 120Hz with ray-tracing - and both the 120 FPS and the ray-tracing would be a perfect fit for the game, given the speeds and futuristic setting. I wonder if we'll ever see new WipeOut games again... :'(

Manuel Nascimento

Tom is goated

Matthew Kincaid

STAND DOWN to the haters going after Gene Park because they have trouble believing his reporting that MindsEye sucks (Metacritic 37, btw). It can be a complex topic to wonder how a big name like Leslie Benzeis might have his legacy threatened by such a stinker, but it's not Gene's fault for brining up the topic.

If PS6 is $500 then I doubt it will even be worth upgrading from a Pro. I'll just save my money for a PC, especially if Sony are gonna be more aggressive with multiplat.

Your Boi Nicky V

Frankly I didn't want to start talking about PS5 and a supposedly $700-800 console after having gotten a Pro at launch. This was a great episode and I'm excited for the future

Shadi Haddad

I appreciate Tom's insight, but I don't really agree with his argument about pressure sensitive buttons on PS3. I don't really see how that's an issue? The PS2 also had these buttons and it turned out to not be a problem. Just look at the MGS collection on the 360 and even the PS5, all they did was slightly modify the control scheme. Unless I'm missing something this seems like a complete non issue.

Birds Aren't Real

Great episode, and Tom got me: I subbed on YouTube.

Tom always welcome
