KnockBack, Episode 287 | The Last of Us: Part II

It may only be about five years old, but The Last of Us: Part II is quite easily one of the greatest games of all-time. Thus, it not only deserves its own episode of KnockBack, but a seven-ish hour one, the longest show in Last Stand history to date. Divisive even before it came out -- but absolutely dripping with style, message, and storytelling -- TLoU2 is a tale about endless violence and cyclical revenge, the kind that you simply can't back away from. The deeper Ellie and Abby fall into their timeless feud, the less they gain and the more they lose. But they just can't help themselves. They refuse to. It's at the heart of what makes this game so incredibly great, and perhaps what makes it so very controversial, too. There's little else to say, other than that the Brothers Moriarty wanted to give love to one of gaming's most phenomenal adventures. Click play for the result...

Finally played through the game for the first time just to listen to this duo talk about it. Yes, I’m also surprised they didn’t deduce the sniper was Tommy. You know what’s funny though, the game bugged out on that part for me and didn’t trigger the next section of Tommy running away, so I was able to walk right up to him without getting hit at one part. So I knew for a fact it was Tommy haha. I wish I would’ve screen recorded it.

I'm sorry but it's unbelievably baffling to me that neither Colin or Dagan realize that the sniper was Tommy considering it's an obvious reveal in the fight that it's Tommy. It's especially egregious on Colins part. Considering it's his third playthrough of the game.

You guys didn't mention this but the stadium is Lumen Field where the Seattle Seahawks play. Pretty cool

I always interpreted Ellie sparing Abby at the end as her realizing that her hatred is more towards herself rather than Abby, because she didn’t make up with Joel soon enough. Ellie can’t forgive herself for that and that builds this hatred that ultimately becomes greater than her hatred for Abby.

The Brothers Moriarty clearly recognize its cultural weight and emotional complexity, and they give it the space it deserves. If you’re a fan of the game—or just fascinated by how storytelling in games can push boundaries—this is essential listening.

Well. I was going to start a new recent game to play now that I got the Plat in P4G… but now I’m downloading TLOU2 remastered now to play again. 😂

This was amazing and is a great format! I had problems with some of the story decisions in the game but it has a lot of depth and you both covered it magnificently

Michael

also lest I forget, this was a fantastic conversation through and through

Am I crazy? I have an hour left while hearing this, but that sniper was Tommy yeah? And thats why there was a section where he taught Ellie how to snipe so that we know how adept he is at it

I hear you mention trying Grounded Mode. I know you love these games Colin but if you think you love them now please don’t sleep on Grounded Mode. It will change the way you look at and play TLOU for the better forever when it ‘clicks’ with you. That is not a clicker pun.

Did they really skip talking about the Abby sex scene? What cowards.
