Interest in that stupid camera is either going to be a non-starter or is going to fizzle out in a couple of months. Nintendo is wasting more time on gimmicks when we just want high quality games with standardized modern features.

I'm rejoining the Nintendo family because I've been waiting for Zelda at 60fps(legitimately). The last Nintendo machine I bought was the Gamecube. I have a question for anyone that can help. Should I (A) Buy the switch versions of BotW and TotK along with a pro controller for €160 and pay the upgrade fee for the improved performance or should I (B) buy the switch 2 versions of both and the new pro controller for €250? It seems obvious but am I missing something?

I recommend Micah play BOTW instead of TOTK. The shrines can at times be a pain in the ass. I could see that being a major turn off. I personally hated them. Tears is technically the better game but I much prefer BOTW. I completed that game minus the korok seeds.

Hopefully they deliver the goods for launch day. I haven't used Argos for a console launch before but saw comments online that they were pretty good with past launches.

Yeah, that's a good point. I do think games are some of the best value you can get, and there isn't a market that really compares as far as bang-for-buck. I agree with that. Either way, twitter-outrage or not, consumers will respond with what they think is valuable. As games get more expensive, I will be curious to see if sales take a hit. Or, if those sales lost would be negligible given a certain price increase off-setting those lost sales (though, that's not accounting for increased pricing across the board due to inflation and tariffs). Or, if it just doesn't matter at all, because IP's like Mario and GTA are so popular, that people will buy no matter what.
Personally, I will spend full price on very select titles, or developers that I want to support. I wait for sales for almost everything else.

Yeah apparently I've secured one with Argos. Not sure why the Nintendo preorders are so much later. I didn't wanna wait incase I didn't get one.
Maybe it's different in the US but here in the UK retailers started taking preorders yesterday.

Can you use economic concepts to explain to me why I paid $40 for Mario Kart 7 in 2011?

I feel the problems with this direct are more than just a speed bump. I haven't seem such a universal knee jerk reaction to the $90 game reveal since Vita revealed its expensive proprietary memory.
I don't think Switch 2 will do that terribly. But if the global prices don't shift to be more in line with the Japanese prices (system $330, games, $60) I could see a significant drop in total lifetime sales from the Switch, with Switch 2 more likely to do half it's numbers (around 70-80m).
The Switch 2 faces much steeper competition this time around with a plethora of new handheld already released and more on the way from both Playstation & Xbox.
Against a Steam Deck 2, PS5 Portable, NextBox the Switch 2 will have a tougher fight. Especially without the cost advantage. Nintendo has for generations pushed themselves as the more budget friendly option for family (a kids first console to play Pokemon on). However as it stands, Nintendo is at price parity with weaker hardware.
There also, hopefully, won't be a pandemic boost.

I feel like the world, economics and politics make a lot more sense when you grasp the idea that the price of goods are not increasing, the value of the dollar is decreasing.
Dismissing a very important economic concept as "fanboys" just "defending their favorite corporation" is a serious flaw in logic.
It is a fact that in real dollars a GameCube game from 2001 would sell for $90 today.
If you want to be upset about a price increase, that's fine, but blaming "corporate greed" doesn't actually make any sense to me. The corporation is merely trying to maintain the status quo, they're not gouging consumers in any way that I can see.
Inflation is literally baked into our current money system, it is an intentional feature and pushing the culpability onto corporations operating within that system doesn't make sense to me.

The reason I have been physical over digital is the physical games typically have a price drop faster and I can share them with my brother in laws. Since the digital will be cheaper and we can share digital games, I will be on team digital for switch 2.

I thought the console price was fine, the price of the games tho? Absolutely insanity. I’ll still buy the switch 2 day one but I’ll be only be playing Mario Kart and the enhanced Zelda games until DK drops cause I’m not buying anything other than the 2 exclusives lol.

Feel like Dustin is being very charitable when talking about Duskbloods being a specifically multiplayer-only game. I'll still pick it up most likely, but can't deny that hearing that it is a multiplayer game rather than a new single player Fromsoft experience, absolutely affects the hype on this game

if all they are doing on launch day is mario kart 9, for me, that absolutely sucks. mario kart is fine as like a sweetener. but (for me) its in no way at all a major stand alone title. i think i put like 5 or 6 hours into 8? i don't play online so it loses its luster very quickly as a single player game. i was hoping the major launch title would be metroid prime. or donkey kong... i'd like to see a major single player title for launch day

2025-04-03 00:29:02 +0000 UTC
There’s a few factors I’m taking into consideration here.
1) I’ve gotten like 1000+ hours out of the last Mario Kart personally.
2) Mario Kart is a primarily multiplayer game, and they’ve made it very easy to do things with one copy of the game now that used to take multiple copies. Between allowing local multiplayer across devices with just one cartridge, or letting a family of eight Switches pass the game around digitally, they’re probably eating a bit into their own sales.
3) Games do cost more to make. Nintendo doesn’t shutter studios, doesn’t do mass layoffs, etc. If any company “does it right” as far as big corporations do anything right, it’s them. They’re likely pricing the game far more appropriately than most other studios, and are doing the entire industry a favor by using their good will to take the first bullet for everyone else.

Man I was the easiest sell for a day one purchase, they basically had to talk me out of it… I’ve been planning to for months, not anymore though. There was so little here for me to get excited about for a preorder.
I know after a year or two it’ll be great but this was immensely disappointing personally and I really didn’t have huge expectations.

2025-04-02 22:32:18 +0000 UTC
A new Mario kart seems like a weak push for $80 though. At least when tears of the kingdom went for $70 it felt fair given the scope of the game.

Bro this thing is 700$ Canadian... I can get a OLED Steam Deck for 689$ right now. Mario Kart is not worth this insanely huge price tag. This is a bad move IMO. Nintendo carved out a nice niche being the side kick system to Playstation or Xbox. But at this price? No chance.

Im not defending Nintendo & the economy is in tough spot. That being said, I was paying $50 for Mario Sunshine in 2002. That’s roughly $90 today with inflation.
So I’m paying the same for Nintendo games more than 20 years later.

2025-04-02 20:18:59 +0000 UTC
The reason we’re getting close to a 1/4th of the price of hardware is because the hardware also hasn’t kept up with inflation. Gamers don’t know how good they have it tbh, and honestly I think the only reason we didn’t see $80 games sooner is corporations putting to much faith in Twitter outrage being reflective of the entire population.
CrazedRaccoon
2025-04-02 20:09:28 +0000 UTC
In regards to the pricing conversation, I do think we are seeing Nintendo make the move to try and price games "appropriately" (their definition of appropriate, of course). Mario Kart being $80 makes more sense when you think about Mario Kart 8 originally coming out over 10-years ago. So, you're essentially paying for a piece of software that you can assume will be around for the next 10-or-so-years.
I still don't love the idea of paying $80 for a new game. Especially when you start to realize, we are almost at the point of paying for 1/4th or 1/5th of the price of a piece of hardware.
Either way, curious to see how the rest of the industry responds, especially Take-Two with GTA VI.
