But -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- that hasn't stopped boo-birds from raining down upon Sony yet again, at least from some particularly loud corners. It seems that some people will literally never be satisfied, no matter what. But for those who are looking forward to new games to play, there was much to be excited about in the form of Lost Soul Aside, Metal Eden, Borderlands 4, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Hell Is Us, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Days Gone Remastered, Tides of Annihilation, and even a brand new Housemarque PS5-exclusive called Saros, amongst much more. This week, we take time to delve into everything discussed during the newest State of Play, and dive into a bunch of other news too. Sony's quarterly financials are out, and PS5 sales are booming, reaching 75 million sold and counting. Meanwhile, Astro Bot is getting even more free DLC, God of War may be reverting to its Greek roots, Resistance and The Order are likely permanently dead, Twisted Metal returns to Peacock this summer, and so on. Tides and Lost Souls blend in my head, cuz they both look generic to me and its more "man with sword" games with no inspiration. They could try to look different at least, but they dont. Japan, while you can have abortions, have more stipulations and tend to at the very least have both people involved and have to give the ok. With declining birth rates and high suicide rates, I can see why it could be more pro life. There are even metal bands in Japan like Dir en Grey that have songs that are definitely from a pro life standpoint

That's all well and good until the game would often just stop, and FORCE you to listen to the cringe bullshit until it was finished, and only then would the door to the next area open. I remember playing with my friend the entire game, and we were both so annoyed and disgusted after it happened for the nth time we immediately uninstalled. No thanks.

Last year I only bought Alone in the Dark, Silent Hill 2 and Astrobot for my youngest. I've realised that I've become bored with newer games and only buy IP I know and love. Im ok with that now.

I'm lapping up remasters and remakes because I enjoy them more than new IP. IP's that I know and love are all I care about. Last 2 times I invested in a new IP, where I got deep into the lore, read all the files, listened to the audio show prequel for example, was Days Gone and Callisto Protocol. I adore both those games, both were panned and sequels cancelled. Why bother with new IP. May aswell wait for a new DMC, Resident Evil, Silent Hill etc.

Hell is us, lost soul aside, monster hunter wilds, Tides of annihilation ontop of Stellar blade and Lies of P DLC; all looked the same kinda game. Can't tell the difference between Splitgate 2 and Metal Eden. Hated Returnal so Saros is off the table. Dustin was right; I've become one of those where I only want certain IP and I'm not interested in new IP.

I felt like a lot of the games blended together too, and even if several of them I'd probably be interested in trying out, I don't think that made it some stellar showcase. I think also, it was strange to not see anything from Ghost or DS2, and the show had barely any surprises outside of Onimusha appearing and Housemarque's game (which was still a cool reveal). Think MGS Delta would've been cool too if it hadn't leaked. Also Dustin's point about the mixed expectations set by Sony I think is very true as well.

Sorry but CGI trailers, repetitive marketing trailers of games we already know about and are coming out soon, and DAYS GONE Remaster (hilarious) are not enough to get me hyped. There were a couple of interesting looking titles (Tides of Annihilation, Shinobi, Midnight Walk, maybe some others) but also a lot of games with the "Gamepass" feel to them. Lots of games with gameplay and art directions and storytelling that all kind of blended together into being mostly forgettable. People are negative on Playstation because the last 6 months has been Concord, leadership shakeups, studio closures, game cancellations, and the realization that there is just a general lack of big 1st party games on the horizon for quite some time.

I couldn’t play any of my games that I was in the middle of getting the platinums. Getting access to the primary was not an option as I’m in Nor-Cal and the relative is in SF. It would be nice regardless of license restoration is on primary or secondary console. I understand online features being down but a game like Hades that has no leaderboard should have no issue being played.

Also our last state of play we saw ghost 2 and death stranding i believe. Two first (and second) party huge things. Now we see a ton of new things including housemarques next big thing. Why are people mad we didn't see more of the same stuff we already know about? Like I don't need to be sold any harder on those 2 games so seeing 30+ new things is hype

Sony easily could have avoided most of it if they would have marketed this state for what it was; a third party showcase. Nintendo does this all the time with Directs built around 3rd party and indie games. Sony should have done the same. Hell, even hold back announcing Returnal's spiritual sequel until you have more to show than its title. As it stands, I wouldn't even say expectations were too extreme. Some sort of update on all ready announced 1st party games for 25 and 26 is a reasonable expectation. But we don't even get an update on Ghost 2, which supposedly is coming out this year.

I can love the games shown, firmly believe there’s only really been 2 - at most - bad showings with these SOP and still firmly identify they’re not working as a main conduit to deliver what your fanbase wants from PR shows. The question is, while ignoring the people that are going to hate regardless like Chris identifies, let’s listen and adapt. Let’s set a schedule here so people have an idea of when we’re going to speak as a company instead of letting the steam bubble to a boiling point and anything short of 5 first party offerings won’t cut it for fans. Gaming is 100% about hype, most people aren’t like Colin who don’t care about the spectacle, they want the pomp and circumstance that came with an E3, it’s why people loved it. I have all the things you described; family, kids, mortgage etc. and gaming is intended to tap into those feelings of nostalgia and hype in its big shows and messaging. They’re not doing a good job. Also, You seem oddly angry over this man, maybe just take a step back and breathe. I get the negativity can really cause you to be pissed, does to me as well, but you’re kind of directing it to someone who isn’t the target of what you’re angry about.

Personally, I think it was a very good show and there were at least 7 games I’m in day 1 on, but they’re not handling them well for the reasons I described. Infrequency, inconsistency and expectations being all over the place. The super negative reception just come from morons and should be ignored but even fair minded people aren’t big fans of the way they’re delivering their messaging and marketing The inertia behind PlayStation is going despite a lack of first party exclusives. Nothing I said here is a commentary on their success overall, only their showings and despite their poor handling PlayStation sells on. We aren’t wrong, if you polled sentiment of those consuming these shows it would likely be down and online sentiment shows that, the question is why. What proportion of PS5 owners are watching State of Plays? And what proportion are watching individual trailers on social channels, at a later date? You have no information on this for such a strong comment. I’m going to guess and say that most PS5 owners will see the trailers (not SOP) on social channels like Insta and TikTok, at a later date. A very small proportion will watch the SOP. So, it’s really nothing. It’s made for the nerds like us. The minority. It’s clean, simple and shows trailers. People seem to be so cynical, self-entitled or spoilt brats. I’ve been using Reddit for 12 months and enjoyed the reading/commenting aspect of it but more and more I see negative views on my own country (England) from fellow Brits, such as it being a ‘shithole’ or they wanting to leave asap. It’s FAR from a shithole, quite the opposite; I sincerely believe the U.K. and U.S (plus Australia) are the top 3 countries to live in the world. And i have no foot in Souls likes, JRPGS, kojima pretentious stuff or indies. To take it simply: the classic PlayStation First Party portfolio! (Maybe I forgot a genre which i like or don‘t like.) At the end of course the panel can talk easily bc the JRPGS and souls like and so on are in the best years of the last 2 decades (FF Remakes and so on). Thought the show was great btw in terms of games, but the style of show is an issue. B+ overall. First, stop listening to the bottom denominator morons with no depth to their critique outside of “L” “this is shit” it’s irrelevant. Second, it starts with the entire presentation style of the PlayStation’s shows. In short, they have no personality and are corporately sterile, unhype delivering mechanisms, Everything Sony has done from a PR standpoint post E3 has been a disaster. When is the last time someone walked away from a post E3 Sony show feeling hyped? I can’t remember one snd merely feeling OK isn’t good enough in video games. People want to feel hyped Third, expectations are just out of sorts and the delivery of these shows are inconsistent. When you go half a year or more with no show you punt on the ability to not deliver BIG-TIME with your show. Anything other than that and fans are going to be disgruntled. Colin and the guys have to see this. Lastly, it’s the lack of information on existing first party announcements and Colin knows that a “one more thing” trailer that is entirely CG with no gameplay isn’t cutting it in 2025. I could talk about this forever and again, Dustin and Chris need to do a better job articulating this stuff and pushing back on Colin’s seemingly genuine head scratching. To me, it’s pretty easy to see why people aren’t loving these shows without falling into the pitfall of internet troglodyte L opinions. Personally, I thought this was a very good show, bordering on great but the criticism of the delivering mechanisms remains regardless of the games shown. Consistency is something LSM has built their brand on, Sony needs to start taking that more to heart to temper expectations that grow with time. I’m all yours if you want to talk about it LSM crew.

You just have very narrow game taste (which isn’t a bad thing). Me personally Shinobi, Lost Soul Aside, Hell is Us, Tides of Annihilation, the Lies of P DLC, Saros, and the directive 8020 all looked good. Tides looked the best to me then Lost Soul Aside, then Hell is Us looked amazing in that order. But since Colin once again had to bring it up and I will continue to call it out - Colin whined about people not thinking Intergalactic looked great then doesn’t call Chris out, in fact, he enables it. You cannot complain about Intergalactic as much as you are doing and then casually skip over Chris any time there is some anime inspired type game brought up. If Chris dismissing anything even anime adjacent just on the looks alone is ok, then the people who don’t like the look and tone of Intergalactic are equally as valid. Overall I thought this State of Play was a solid B on an F to S ranking system. Some really interesting looking games and some duds as well but I don’t expect every game shown to be great looking or even to my tastes. The fact that JRPGs are my favorite genre and there weren’t any and it still got a B is great IMO

Since Sony says nothing, if you don't have a big announcement they are better off saying nothing or make a blog post. A SoP is for the plugged in gamer. Darwin's Paradox - looking like a cuter version of Inside Onimusha - Not sure if I’ll like this but it looked really cool Dreams of Another - loved the art style. Don’t know about the game play but I wanna learn more. Days Gone Remastered - yeah I’ll pay $10 for the upgrade. Lost Records - was gonna play this eventually but finding out E1 is part of the PS Extra/Premium sub moved it up to day 1 for me Tides of Annihilation - looked really cool. Hoping I’ll like how it feels. Metal Eden - looked really cool. Nice to have a new single player focused FPS MindsEye - looked like a 7-8 but still fun. Was surprised it’s Benzies’ game Saros - the only thing I didn’t like about Returnal was the way you got into battles, if they could streamline that so it’s faster, more akin to Hades, then I’ll love this. But I know it’ll still be fun in its own right. So yeah, lotta stuff I’m looking forward to. 🤷🏻♂️

Not sure when a CG trailer for a game (house mark)that could be almost two years away count for anything. The Pro is set as my primary console. I have game sharing enabled between the pro and the launch model ps5. When I tried to launch digital games like FF7 Remake, FF7 rebirth or even your game Tri Breaker during the PSN outage, I was challenged with a license check that couldn’t complete. I was unable to disable the game sharing setting on either console as again, these feature settings weren’t accessible in the console OS during the outage. To Americans it tastes great because they’re used to it, but to people from other countries it tastes bland and flavourless, no matter how much sauce or cheese you Americans use! I’m Australian and for reference I’ve spent more than 6 months in the USA and travelled the world fairly extensively. European food is probably the best, good, fresh ingredients go further than lots of ingredients and sauce.

I get being disappointed with 1st party output in general, but why were you so let down by this specific showing? People only have themselves to blame if they build up unreasonable expectations ahead of State of Plays these days, and it's not like they promised much anyway - the blog post didn't have any reference to PS Studios or 1st party games (and yet they still announced one of those anyway). I'd understand your annoyance if this was built up as a PlayStation Showcase where we'd have been expecting a ton of stuff announced, but I just don't understand this take. Also as I'd seen someone else mention, in the last 6 months, we've have Yotei, Intergalactic and Saros announced as new 1st party games - if we just had mid/no State of Plays in that period and PS didn't show up to Game Awards, and we had a showcase now in Q1 with those reveals along with the usual 3rd party stuff, and maybe gameplay of DS2 - people would probably be pretty hyped for that showcase. As it is, we are or already have got all that shown regardless, just spread out more. Sometimes I think people miss the hype more than the actual game output

However, I have a teenager and very few of his friends game on console. Thats what they’re talking about. Speaking as a professional data analyst at a big corporation, there’s lots of explanations for the current numbers. PlayStation is growing while Xbox is shrinking. Could be a lot of people moving platforms. Especially with everyone saying Xbox is dead. Game revenue is up from the PS4. Of course. AAA games are $10 more expensive. MTX are also way more common. Particularly battle passes. What would be more informative is what is the attach rate between the 2 generations, as well as how much of that revenue is from MTX compared to the previous generation. Also, PS5 sales went up at the same time as a console launch. Makes sense. What would be more telling is not PSN users, but how many unique PSN subscribers compared to console sales. I’d expect a lot of duplication there. And clearly no one shares accurate numbers because MAUs are always going to be higher than subscribers. Hence much of the backlash from the PC space because some of those people don’t want to pad the PSN numbers. Also, comparing Switch sales to PS5 sales is a bad comparison. The Switch is a handheld that can be used on a TV. It’s much cheaper and more versatile. Especially for a more casual audience.

Historically, Colin and most PlayStation fans believe that the exclusive games set PlayStation apart. As exclusive releases decline, there's less reason to differentiate PlayStation, making the identity of a "PlayStation fan" or the relevance of a “PlayStation podcast” questionable. This is why most gaming podcasts have gone platform agnostic. But Colin (in typical Colin-fashion) refuses to change. In conclusion- Pointing out that the main reason to be a PlayStation fan is fading exposes the flawed logic in his approach to the podcast and, in turn, threatens his business.

But in advance, Dustin was nearly right with the „uncharted 8“ take ;) U always talk about the amount of games, good games and new games which release every year. But u know also that there are too many and a lot of them are mediocre or bad. I’m 36 and my entry point into console gaming (before pc) was the PS3 era! With all the until today generational defining exclusive series like Uncharted, Infamous, Gran Turismo, God of war, LBP, TLoU and a lot of other exclusives from sony studios. U know them all. And of course the strategy (corporate wise) wasn‘t perfect, but I think a big chunk of PS fans coming from those times (and oc before) and games, bc this games were REALY all more or less 9/10 games! I loved PS for that! In PS4 era the games were more difficult and slower to make but there were enough. The games of Generation like Gow 2018, Horizon, TLoU, Ghost of Tsushima, Days gone, Bloodbourne etc. Since PS5 there are not nearly such high class SP narrative games with this PS STUDIO Story and Visuals polish! Since Uncharted 2 the visuals of the exclusives were best in class on Sony consoles in comparison with the competitors. This combined with the whole monstrously big fails in GAAS, cancelled (TLoU MP) and not cancelled projects (Concord, Gow MP-Game) since ~2020, with one or 2 high class games a year, letting me go crazy when in the State of Play they show again nothing from their good old PlayStation studios magic. What are the studios doing in the last 3-5 years? Yeah we know now what happened and it drives me crazy! Especially when I think what we could have… That’s it! Yeah we have much awesome games to play, but we want simply a few of those PlayStation Studios exclusive games from the ps3/ps4 gen AGAIN. not a Honkai starrail or GAAS No 23! but maybe i‘m also a dieing gamer species :D 2 weeks ago I played Uncharted 4 from 2016(?) and god this game looks phenomenal and the story is also nearly perfect! I mean the PS Blog announcement didn't even make any reference to PlayStation Studios or 1st party games at all (despite them announcing a new Housemarque game), so I really struggle to see why so many people are whining about it afterwards - it's not like they over promised and under delivered, it's the opposite if anything. You'd swear they announced in advance that this would be a Playstation *Showcase* which would outline the 2nd half of the PS5 lifecycle. But no, this was a State of Play which has started to map out the rest of 2025 nicely with a ton of specific release dates, show off a wide variety of games, and ends with a new PS Studios game reveal. I really don't understand what people are expecting from these sort of shows. All in all that's a pretty damn good State of Play, which follows up other solid showings which ended with announcements of Astro and Yotei. If y'all have unreasonable expectations, thats on you. Nobody ever suggested State of Plays would be like peak E3 conferences
