Sacred Symbols+, #406 | Breaking Down PlayStation 5 Pro

Please welcome Tom from Moore's Law Is Dead and the Broken Silicon podcast back to Sacred+. It's been a while since we've employed Tom's technical expertise on our show, but with PS5 Pro officially acknowledged and announced, it's time to get into the nitty-gritty of just this machine is all about, and what it can do. Together, Tom and I (Colin) discuss the console's power, performance, and (of course) its price, not to mention the divisive response to the announcement. We also take a little bit of time to get into some extraneous tech talk, too, on topics like a new PlayStation handheld, PlayStation 6, the future of Xbox, and Super Switch, too. Please enjoy.

Yeah and they are wrong

Brandon V

They address why the cpu isnt a big deal

John Kephart

Ps5 pro still available 4 days after launch Yeah it's not flying off shelves

Wayde

Tom saying PS6 in 2027? Noooooo shot

Aaron

Ok.

Adam Barnes

both the Dukes and SS have their own biases, if you cant see that im not sure what to tell you.

Homz

lol, in what world pal? Cute beard btw

Adam Barnes

No different from Colin's Sony deepthroating.

Bailey Callis

Ok.

Adam Barnes

That's a weird thing to say...

Great episode i think the Pro will be a good purchase for people who want the best experience they can get. Personally i will wait until my current launch day PS5 needs replacing or the Pro gets a good price drop in the future. I think the only thing that may hold the Pro back in sales will be the price. I understand that stuff cost more these days i mean i paid £449.99 on day 1 for my (disc) PS5 & the same retailer is currently selling the Slim (disc) £479.99 what like 4 years later almost. So £699.99 is a big ask if you already have a working PS5 already & I can’t see parents dropping Pro money for there kids.

The Dukes should listen to this episode. Their Microsoft dickriding is getting out of hand

Adam Barnes

I find it odd that PS5 doesn’t have Dolby Vision. My Bravia tv supports DV and the console and tv otherwise share some common functionality.

Stray_Bullets

Great episode !

I'm one of those people, I can't quite bring myself to pay £300-400 on a quality 4k player when the ps5 is excellent just lacking Dolby vision and a couple features. But seeing the pro without a disc drive knowing I'd have to buy it on top isn't ideal. I do buy some of my games physically too especially newer releases

Murderer Kevin

You're describing me to a t. If Playstation goes all digital, I'll double down on PC and make Switch 2 my "main" console for physical. Physical IS the main reason why I still play on console.

ToiletDrummer

I suspect that Microsoft's bungling of Xbox is largely responsibly for the price of the pro. Sony don't need to compete so why not open a new segment that generates more profit. Worked well enough for Apple, NVIDIA, Intel and most fashion brands. Their expectations of about 10% - 15% of ecosystem uptake by about 2029(can't remember where I saw that) kind of reflects that. As long as they keep in mind that the base model is the target audience and not split the base like Microsoft did, they should be fine. I'm dubious about the "build a pc bro" narrative though. Console and PC are two different ecosystems. I can't see a pro segment running off to many potential PS5 buyers with the base model still around. I don't think the pro is much of an enticement either for someone thinking about high fidelity gaming. I think its probably a "for those with extra cash in the Sony ecosystem" product.

Not the thread for questions

The pro is to expensive I’ll just go spend almost twice as much on a pc that also has no disc drive!

Scott

Yes, what’s the issue

Brandon V

Did you even listen to the show?

RoughSlpr

It's been fascinating listening to all the commentary and criticisms about the Pro from both the tech YouTubers and mainstream audiences. I think I understand now that I'm not actually Sony's target audience. What I'm most excited for as a fan of this medium is seeing how the general consumer embraces a higher priced ps6 or ps5 pro.

Morgan

Another great interview really enjoyed it, cheers.

Robot Booty

Missed having tom on the show, you guys do a great job of going over the information in an enjoyable way. 😀

Queef Wellington

It's been so long I forgot how great of a guest Tom is.

Eric the human

If you wanted to watch a movie at the highest fidelity, you wouldn't do it on a PS5. It doesn't support Dolby Vision. It's why I have a Blu ray player. I guess saying Dolby Vision is better than HDR is subjective, but I think most people feel that way.

Jimmy Valentine

Yea I agree with this, that video alone has made me seriously consider not only upgrading, but also going all digital (selling my current physical titles, taking a loss and buying through the store over time in sales). I played Rebirth and it has probably broken into my top five games of all time, but the issues were there. Seriously considering the upgrade now.

Cormac

The argument people are making about no disc drive isn’t, (or shouldn’t be), “I’ll just build a PC to show Sony! (where there’s also no disc drive).” Rather, if you remove the disc drive and I’m in a truly closed ecosystem, there’s no reason I wouldn’t just go to PC, an open ecosystem with better performance. If push comes to shove, PlayStation loses one of the things that a now small minority enjoy about it. So that’s seriously something to consider. And I think people who are primarily Steam users trust Valve more than Sony; it’s a better operated platform.

Hugh Jalode

Modern games are much more CPU intensive than in the past. To pretend that the CPU staying the same isn’t a problem is laughable and highlights a complete lack of knowledge. The PS5 pro will not be running any new games at 60fps with a resolution over 1080p and most probably won’t even be 1080. Colin’s issue with Alan Wake 2 shimmering is because of low resolution which doesn’t seem to be fixed with PS5 pro. If you are a person who doesn’t want to have to choose between resolution or frames, you should be on PC at this point. There will always be a compromise with consoles. Always.

Brandon V

Hearing more about the ps5 pro is getting me more and more excited to get my hands on it. I can't wait to get my pre order in here very soon. Loved listening to you guys talk and looking forward to another show with Tom.

mattyboy316

One aspect people never bring up with the disk drives is movies. People that want the highest end console for fidelity care about fidelity in all their media. Unlike games where it doesn’t make much difference, the best way to watch movies in their highest fidelity is still with physical media. For a lot of people, their PS5s are also their Blu-Ray movie players.

Jared R

Big fan of Tom. Get him on constellation.

Peter Jansen

Then who do you like? Level1Tech Wendell who gets along great with Tom? Do you guys know how hardware speculation, rumours and leaks work? Can we get a link to the subreddit supposedly hosting all his misdeeds as usual.

Jordan Wray

hardware unboxed arent exactly top tier themselves either lol. They have some pretty bad takes at times, though atleast their factual data is backed up.

Stinkling

I honestly don't care that much but he can't be that big of a joke if continually does podcasts with Hardware Unboxed.

Cory Knudsen

Yeah I don't think Colin knows he's pretty controversial in the tech world. I do have to say though Tom isn't that bad with his leaks as much as people make him out to be. People just don't realize if you want full context of what Tom says you really have to listen to all of his content or you'll miss a lot of what he says.

MayorGarbageMan

Really? Never heard this

StewDog

Nice. Welcome back Tom!

Chronic Everlasting

Why is Colin still making content with this grifter? Moore's Law is a huge joke in anyone who actually understands tech.

Powerman

I almost wish you could’ve waited to be able to comment on digital foundry’s video showing how remarkable an improvement the pro makes on titles like rebirth. It doesn’t move the needle much for me but it certainly sells the pro much better than Sonys presentation

Tom Gentry

Oh hell yeah been waiting for this one

Eric
