We gush about it in the What We're Playing section of the show, and encourage all of you to give it a try if you haven't already. Meanwhile, over in hardware territory, the long-lingering PlayStation 5 Pro has been officially revealed for a November release. Some people are excited about the machine (the three of us will each be buying our own for launch), but many others aren't pleased at the high price, the lack of a disc drive, and even what the machine can do. Who's right? It turns out everyone is! Capitalism will sort this whole thing, one way or another... but something tells us PS5 Pro will be just fine. Other news this week includes John Garvin's most recent Days Gone-related Twitter episode, a slight increase in the cost of a new DualSense, a fresh approach for future Destiny 2 content, and more. I think some of it is on me, for being extremely sensitive to sound/distractions in class (during test taking in particular). I grew tiresome of the outbursts but fought along silent. I guess the teacher did too, till that last day. 😂 Thankfully, no students throwing chairs, like moments I had going to an alternative HS (not that they are all bad, a great resource, just some bad eggs). 😀

2024-09-17 09:33:37 +0000 UTCI think for me the Pro price and lack of disc drive is a few reasons holding me back, especially because the PS4 was disc only. I bought a PS4 pro because it ran games noticeably better. It didn't overheat or sound like an aeroplane. Crucially, the pro introduced 4K to games at 30fps and 60fps to 1080p and took advantage of what was my new 4K TV. The PS5 Pro isn't a leap like that. It's not even going to do 4K/60fps in many cases. Throw in the backdrop of first party games going up £15-£20 to £70, DS5 controllers going up £5 and still flawed, PS Premium under delivering but increasing by £20 or Extra by £16. Then throw in the fact that many titles are crossgen PS4 game and it's only the past 12 months we really see the previous gen finally gone. The PS5 was a big leap with the SSD and 4K disc drive to play my ever increasing collection of 4K films. It will be the first Playstation console I'll skip. I bought both PS1's, both PS2's, all 3 PS3's, both PS4's, the PSP, Vita and PS5. And if Sony go digital only, I'll buy a PC instead. It will cost more for the hardware, but games would be much cheaper, there's emulation for 40 years of games from all systems plus I can use it for work and the kids for school. When PS Store was selling RE4 on release for £54.99 but day 1 Asda sold it physically for £42, I'm not paying £13 more for digital. Spiderman 2. I paid £64 for it, £6 less than the PS store. Finished it in a week, didn't rate it, sold it for £60. I paid £4 for it in effect. If I spent £70 on the PS store, it's dead money. I will never play Spiderman 2 again and digital is a financial trap.

First they hike the price to 1000 for a 'pro' model, people say it's nuts, it still sells, and then it's just the norm moving forward. You don't like the price - don't buy it, they'll get the message. Historically Playstation's best moments were when they undercut their competitors with $299 for the PS1 and $399 for the PS4, though. You cannot underestimate the potential of getting people into your ecosystem at a 'cheap' price to sell them subscriptions, games, and accessories later. With Microsoft becoming the biggest publisher, and their ability to sell at a loss with $3+ trilion at their back, all the while Sony's 1st party output is slow this gen and they're more stingy with pricing (controllers, consoles, games, ps5 upgrades, PS+, etc), I could see a potential PS3 situation brewing next generation IF things continue as they are. This might turn out to be a huge mistake in the long run.

I took her to a Circa Survive concert for her birthday in 2012 and I haven’t listened to rap since. It just doesn’t resonate with me anymore. But when I when to my first rock concert my whole life changed. We saw Coheed like 7 times since. The wildest one was definitely the Starland ballroom in Jersey. What an amazing experience. We also saw them at the chameleon club In Lancaster PA where they unveiled the “Dark Sentencer” for the first time. The Star Wars band Galactic Empire opened for them and that was dope to see.

To me, it is Sony’s responsibility to keep disc drives available, but I anticipate them embracing the scarcity because a digital scenario benefits them. A 'slight' refresh with no disc drive should be the same cost as a new, next generation console? The pro should be 600 max, or at least they should've shown a little clearer just how much better it will be than the base ps5. So far, $700 for the upgrades seem extreme for a ton of people, myself included who usually throws money at upgrading to the latest hardware.

Fewer stores are selling physical games in the abundance they once did. Unless you preorder, GameStop never has extra copies of new releases. On top of that, there isn’t a game released these days that doesn’t require a substantial patch once you put a disc in the drive. At this point, the disc is literally just a license for a download. The PS5 Pro not shipping with a 4K BR Drive isn’t the ‘rip off’ people are making it out to be. The bellyaching is more about FOMO than it is about price. I’ll be buying one regardless. I bought a high end OLED TV and would like to take advantage of the Pro’s fidelity. Also, Welcome back, Dustin. You’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of 3rd party stands for the PS5 Slim that cost less than half of the price of the Sony product.

2024-09-14 17:20:29 +0000 UTCI do think the lack of competition contributes to the price of both the $600 2tb XSeX and the $700 PS5 Pro. Both MS and Sony know that there's no point in trying to price more competitively, it won't really matter, so they both set prices where they make a nicer profit. It also can make sense to switch to PC when/if PlayStation abandons discs. It could be that you game on PS because you are a big fan of physical games. If Sony abandons that, some may say, "well, I can't play physical games either way now, so I'll just go to PC primarily now because of X, Y, or Z..." That's not my position, but it could make sense. I have the money and may end up buying a PS5 Pro, but I want to be sold on it. That presentation totally failed in selling it. I downloaded a high quality version of the video from Digital Foundry and sat right up to my 48" LG C1 I use as a computer monitor and there is a difference shown, but it is so minimal that it's just not that obvious if you're not looking at side by side comparisons.

Routinely the quarterly earnings charts companies put out showcase "digital sales" which includes dlc, mtx, digital-only games etc. To my knowledge I don't think we've seen a granular breakdown for solely full retail games aside from the Insomniac leaks, which actually showed in physical's favor. No doubt digital is a bigger share than physical overall but the true nature to what extent that is has been constantly doctored by the stats these companies put out. Also don't you think the ratio of physical collectors is much higher in the hardcore 10% of playstation customers likely to buy the pro model?

The price of living has gone up since 2016 way faster than wages globally. I see ps5 pro being under 3 million at best

Other than speed, I miss the PS4 all the time. Personally, I was really looking forward to the Pro but that presentation killed my hype. Not a good reason to upgrade, if at least for now. Col, you say the reaction won’t be the same as online talk because the disc drive sold out. Of course it’s gonna sell out immediately. If even the niche Portal sells out, then clearly this will. The better question is will it hold? Scalpers will surely clear out a lot of the initial inventory, but I don’t see the longing demand there yet. Outside of you guys, I haven’t even seen other reviewers excited for it. Ubi has been slacking in quality as of late for sure. Hoping the new AC changes that. 1 of the rare times I actually want to buy a Ubi game on day 1. The publicity alone from that Rockstar-centric tweet got me to check out that song, so I guess it’s a minor win for them in terms of attention. I wasn’t feeling the track tho.

First as a lesson for all, the US uses sales tax and it gets added on at the end of the transaction. The avg sales tax in the US is 6.44% bc it varies by state and city. The price of a PS5 Pro is roughly $745 after sales tax in the US. The UK inversely uses Value Added TAX. This is a tax that is already included in the price. The VAT in the UK is a whopping 20%. So the price of the PS5 Pro in the UK is £583.33 before the tax. If you then convert the pre tax price of £583.33 to USD using the avg conversion rate of roughly 1.25 the last year, it is equivalent to $729 in the US. A $30 price difference. Not a $400 difference as the person from the UK tried to claim. There are other factors like tariffs, shipping costs, etc that can factor into these prices as well. Easier to send stuff to US directly from China via boat than it is to send stuff to the UK which typically require air freight or a shipping down and around Africa. If the Brits want to complain about the price of the PS5 Pro tell them to go to their legislators and lower their taxes, lol. Please share this PSA bc it’s so annoying to hear people from the UK, EU and Australia make false equivalencies when they don’t understand the differences in taxes, conversion rates, tariffs, and shipping.

The stage was spinning and they were fucking slaying that shit. They are amazing and know arenas. We saw Coheed at an arena once and it sucked, they aren’t an arena band. But coheed at the starland ballroom is fucking epic. Some bands are arena bands. Muse is definitely one of them.
