Constellation, Episode 85 | Mythology, Vigilantism, Adaptations, Cars

Welcome back to Constellation, Last Stand Media's conversational podcast. This week, I (Colin) am joined by LSM executive producer Ben Smith, Summon Sign host Brad Ellis, and Hoeg Law's Rick Hoeg. Rick kicks off this time around with a topic about mythological pantheons. From Roman to Greek to Norse and beyond, do we find ourselves particularly interested in or attracted to any of these ancient forms of worship? Next up is Brad, who wants to chat about film, TV, and game adaptations. Whether we're talking about The Last of Us, Batman, Castlevania, or something else entirely, which IP have most successfully crossed media boundaries in our eyes? From here, we come to Ben for a conversation all about cars. What was the first car we personally owned? What car do we own now? Do we like driving? Finally, I wrap things up with an inquiry into vigilantism, specifically through the lens of recent 'predator catcher' videos that have gone from non-violent to decidedly aggressive. Do the victims deserve this level of treatment, or have things officially gotten out of control?

Ben is wrong. Twisted Metal is both a great show and an awesome adaptation. It is also Peacock’s watched original.

that's cool as hell you get to choose. I'd love more choices in America and along those same lines, be able to choose exactly where most of my taxes go

In Finland, most of our power comes from hydroelectric, wind, wood, and nuclear. Only about 7% of the country's electricity comes from fossil fuels and you can choose which sources your energy comes from when signing a power/electricity contract.

This was nice mix of peeps.

How is no one mentioning Neil Diamond’s “Sandman”? Lol!

Hey LSM crew, I know this a random place for this comment/request, but I'm not sure the best place to share it. I would love to hear you guys debate and bring awareness to the problematic nature of low print run publishers. IMO, most of them are nothing more than grifters who pretend to support game preservation while lining their pockets by creating artificial scarcity. Yet, developers continue to enable them. It leaves physical media consumers and game preservationists at the mercy of a rapidly growing market that exploits them. It's hard to blame consumers for using the only options provided to them. It's like blaming consumers for supporting ISP monopolies. What other choice do they have? Meanwhile, games journalists don't do anything to bring awareness to this issue. It's pretty messed up. On the flip side of the coin, I suppose there are some valid arguments that these publishers enable indie teams to finally bring their games to the market physically. However, the huge rise in large studios using LRG and similar companies indicates that supporting smaller developers is not the primary intent. Anyways, sorry for the rant. I'd just love to have someone, anyone, bring some much needed attention to this issue.

I watch some of the weirdest, most depraved horror films out there, but I find shows like Cops or fights on YT a bit too mean-spirited. I care for entertainment that revolves around people are their lowest.

Evan

Holy crap, Spartan was a blast. Never heard anyone else mention it. Wonder if it holds up.

Quick 2nd comment to Ben and Rick...I will NEVER forget being in the theater and seeing that 1st Ironman movie...and the end credits scene when Nick Fury comes out and drops the bombshell of the team coming in the future movies. My brother and I absolutely lost it haha. To grow up as comic book nerds and see no one give a shit about any of that, and then suddenly Sam Jackson walks on screen and drops that bombshell after an INCREDIBLE movie?!? I can't even begin to tell you how I felt when I saw the Thanos reveal. It was like every dream had come true. 🤯

The criticism of casting Robert Downey Jr, isn't because they cast him as "Doctor Doom"...while I'd dislike that, it could still turn out okay and follow one of the books. The problem is that they cast him as Victor Von Doom. That is a completely different matter altogether. He's now playing 2 totally different people. I do find it absolutely ridiculous UNLESS they literally never show his face (they will, because Hollywood), or give him the Colin Ferrell treatment and make him so unrecognizable that you literally can't tell it's him...and at that point, why did you cast him then in the first place?

First Greek mythology game my twin brother and I ever played wasn't God of War, it was Spartan: Total Warrior on GameCube. We adored that game so much. As for BioShock Infinite, that view you get of Comstock House surrounded by storm clouds right before Songbird takes Elizabeth is still haunting to me. The giant busts of the founders look so ominous, it's crazy.

It’s so adorable Colin lets us know every time he unmutes his mic by saying “Sorry, I was muted.” Almost negating the purpose of being muted. Lol

Zackery Parkerson

I make my living off people who love cars. I’m super blessed and thankful for having such a unique business. I especially enjoy fixing cars with hail damage. You would be amazed by what can be fixed. I’ve fixed cars with a thousand dents on it. I honestly fucking love it. Shout out to cars 🙌

Michael Mashpotato

I dunno…I find fight videos and vigilante videos really gross, regardless of the circumstances. We have laws and law enforcement for that. I just feel really bad about how the internet in general and monetization has spawned all sorts of wild behavior.

Always a pleasure to hear Hoeg on LSM content. Have we ever had Hoeg and Jaffe on a show together? Their lawful / chaotic energies could be quite the combo.

Ross Stoddart

We need more Hoeg. Always love when he makes an appearance

Chris Evans

Love Hoeg on Stelly. He brings a refreshing voice.

Diddy’s Dong Quest

Hoeg's comments about writers getting cute with the naming of things brings Alien: Romulus to mind.

Lunar Tear

I will say I personally dont enjoy the ones where they call their wives and families. These women and family members are victims, and to immortalize thier pain for the world to see is in poor taste.

Jose Horrach

Given Hoag's description Vigilantism might not be the right term. What Colin is describing is the comodification of crime. It has become a form of entertainment and a form of income. This was true with Cops, but it has gotten way more diversified. I watch a youtube channel devoted to making fun of and shaming shoplifters. The catching of the shoplifter has become more valuable than deturing it.

Brad, hell yeah! Gonna need the Jeb Bush meme but with Brad in front of the LSM logo.

Best episode yet!
