Sacred Symbols+, Episode 394 | Pentiment Review Discussion and Spoilercast

In late 2022, Obsidian's period adventure game Pentiment launched on Xbox and PC, and can still be found on Game Pass as part of your subscription to this day. But here in PlayStation Land, Pentiment is a much more recent addition, and a deeply surprising one. The opening salvo of four Xbox-published games' arrival on Sony platforms, Pentiment hasn't drawn nearly the level of attention the likes of Hi-Fi Rush and (especially) Sea of Thieves have. And that's totally fine, if not completely understandable. Indeed, this is a title that's definitively not for everyone, or even most people. But within the 12-ish hours Pentiment offers players, the willing and able are bound to find something truly remarkable, at least if you're open to reading a ton of dialogue and immersing yourself in the life and times of the Holy Roman Empire. With deep themes touching on a range of topics and ideas -- class, economics, the Catholic church, the Reformation, paganism, occultism, crime, history, culture, and so much more -- Pentiment is a true master class. With choices to make galore, deep replayability, and a thorough appreciation of Europe's past, we highly recommend Pentiment to those it's squarely aimed at (yet likely didn't give it a second thought), and we're excited to talk about it today here on +.

It's funny you mentioned it being 15 hours at most - it took me nearly 30 to beat it!

Also, Colin is convinced that you cannot solve the murders. I am fairly certain that Lucky and the woman who had the affair with the miller were guilty.

Within the first two minutes of the episode two things jump out at me: First of all, how does Matty keep missing these episodes? First Fallout and now this… I get he is busy but I feel like these are the kind of episodes where you gotta just make it happen. Second of all: Why is Colin talking about reaching out to Josh Sawyer for a Pentiment interview when Matty and Cog already interviewed him on DDU back when the game released? Colin doesn’t even mention that fact, and for some reason neither does Cog? I’m confused. It sounds like Colin either forgot it happened or is pretending it never did.

Colin, please please try Disco Elysium. It's an adult story with explicitly political and historical themes. You liking Pentiment is a good indicator

Played Pentiment at launch with my wife and really enjoyed it, this episode was a nice surprise!

Fantastic episode!! I was on the fence but I love these kinds of games and you sold me on it. Just bought a copy. Thank you!

Robbie Cooper

Thank you! Does anyone have book recommendations about the reformation era?

Beau!

Is this the first game to get two separate spoilercasts? Because Matty and Cog did one for DD+

First episode I've skipped in years of LSM, due to wanting to finish before spoiling. Very interesting game.

Jeremy Brauner

Fuck yes.

Glad to see Colin finally played this. I played through it a month ago and one of my first thoughts was that was one Colin ass game.

Thomas

Josh Sawyer has become one of my favorite creatives in the industry.

Noah Friscopp

Yes! I loved Pentiment, can’t wait to hear you guy’s thoughts.

Would be cool to do Hi-Fi Rush as well since we are in a lull!

Excited to listen to this. Pentiment is still my favorite game I have played this year on PS, even if it isn’t new. It’s very rare to see a game actually achieve the level of storytelling and maturity in themes that Pentiment has. It is heavily inspired by the classic novel The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, so it is not a surprise. I hope more teams are able to budget and size efficiently so more games like this can be produced.

Oh sweet, this is good. Now I have a reason to go back and finish it. Kind of fell off when shadow of edtree came out

Pumped for this! Pentiment hit at just the right time for me. It’s a really enjoyable game if you’re in the right mood and have the right expectations going in
