Sarah's Find

It's been several days.

You're not entirely sure what happened, why it happened, or even how. But you're small. Tiny. Ant sized. And you've been trapped in an expansive jungle that seems to stretch for eternity. The nights have been frightening. Creatures, which before all of this were smaller than the nail on your pinky, can be heard lingering around in the tree like blades of grass. So far you've been lucky to avoid them. At least live ones. You found a dead ant yesterday and, after laboring to start a tiny fire (even at this pathetic size), you managed to eat. Dew from the grass has been your water. But it's only a matter of time before things get bad. Eventually, it will rain. Or a lawnmower will circle the park. Or some other ungodly thing. You need to get out of here.

Fortunately, you know where to go. A massive trash can, bigger than any building you've ever seen, looms. The past two days you've made your way to it. You know it stands along the concrete path, which you can climb up to get out of the jungle. Maybe someone will finally see you.

It takes two hours to climb up a blade of grass to get atop the long stretch of concrete slab that is the path. Many attempts end with you falling back down to the dirt. Each time you think you might break a bone, but it mercifully never happens. You use some cracks in the concrete as leverage and eventually you make it up. The sun is high in the sky...very high from this perspective. It looks to be mid-afternoon. There should be some people around. You know there are some that aren't stuck in your position. You've seen them on occasion. Massive lumbering beings whose ever footfall shakes the earth, their booming vocalizations deafening you, their very passage spooking tiny insects hidden in the grass, scattering like frightened birds. Still, despite the towering size, they are the only things that can possibly save you now. At this size, you can't get far on your own. It would take years just to reach the end of the park.

You feel it as soon as your feet touch the massive plain of hardened rock. A soft tremor, followed by another, then another, each growing heavier. You turn and see her. A woman is walking towards you. She's distant now, allowing something of a decent view. She seems young, early twenties, long brunette hair. A red purse is slung around a shoulder. Her attire is a red tank top, blue jeans, and black and white sneakers. The heavy click accompanying her steps, as well as how she is walking, makes you believe that the sneakers might have heels on them.

You realize that you're directly in the path of those sneakers. A little bug to be ground into paste by them. Immediately, you think to jump back into the jungle, but the slab is too high. If you leap from all the way up here, you certainly WILL break something this time around. She's approaching fast. The tremors become mini earthquakes, knocking you off your feet. There's nowhere to run. All you can do is hope one of those sneakers don't land on you as she gets closer...

...closer...

...CLOSER...

...silence...

After a panicked moment of checking to see if you are, in fact, still alive, you crane your head upwards. Standing above you is the young woman. She has stopped. And, incredibly, she is looking down right at you. Hope surges through you and you leap to your feet, waving your arms into the sky and screaming as loud as you can. The girl looks at you for a moment longer before squatting down, her knees popping loudly as she does. She reaches for you and you recoil instinctively. However, there is nowhere to hide and you are too small to even try to outrun the massive fingers which clutch you with surprising gentleness. In mere seconds, you stand on a new plain, one of warm, very soft flesh. Above you looms two massive, brown eyes that study you intently.

“You're lucky I happened to glance down,” Her voice is soft but still pounds in your ears. “I almost crushed you!”

You're too awed by the situation to speak and you doubt she would hear you anyway. A fragrance fills the air. It's sweet but almost overbearingly strong at your puny size. You cough. She doesn't seem to notice.

“You shouldn't stay out here.” She says. “I'll take you home with me!”

You feel movement as her hand begins to lower.
