_______
Hey, Readers. You remember the first trailer for the live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie?
/Y’know, the one that’s serving as an origin story for Doctor Robotnik portrayed by Jim Carrey, the one where ol’ dude who played Cyclops in the original X-Men trilogy has to pretend to be Bob Hoskins, and where Sonic looked like this?/ (End with scream)
Well, a lot has happened since we got that trailer.
About a week after the trailer dropped, Jeff Fowler -- the director of the movie -- went to twitter,
/And revealed that they were going to redesign Sonic for the movie after hearing such a huge outcry about it/
Then out of concern of the livelihood, physical and mental health of the animators, enough concern about them crunching to meet the original release date was drawn to the point where Paramount Pictures agreed to push back the release date to give them proper time to work. It’s a news story that I covered a few months ago on the channel if you wanna hear more about it.
This video however, is about an “update” regarding the redesign of Sonic himself
And I put the word update in quotation, because not only is it still a rumor, but there’s some things about everything that...I don’t necessarily trust
So in mid October of 2019, a couple of images containing possible redesigns of Sonic for the movie got that good ol fashioned leaked treatment.
/One image looking like it’s going to be a new poster design for merchandise and whatnot because there’s an updated look of Jim Carrey’s Robotnik with the missiles from the trailer in the background, and the other according to all of my Nintendo stan friends that looks like it came straight off of an animation for the character Smash Bros/
The latter I can’t really confirm, because I-I don’t...I don’t smash.
...I mean I DO smash. Ju-just not...not THAT Smash; I don’t PLAY... I get it in...! (Pause) I don’t play Super Smash Bros.
(exhausted breath) Why am I like this...?
And it’s because of that possible fact that individuals just chalked these leaks as fakes; just more fan redesigns that were made to look like they were official and were just Mission:Impossible’d out of the animation studio
Then this past weekend, images of a movie theater standee with the Smash Bros inspired Sonic render appeared online advertising the movie.
/It’s not in a movie theater per say. It looks more like its in an office building awaiting approval more than anything./
Now from what I’ve been hearing, this image is the proof that everyone needed to validate those previous images I shared being the authentic redesign for Sonic in the live-action movie; that they took INSPIRATION from the Super Smash Bros Sonic render and just updated it to fit the character’s look for the upcoming film.
I...don’t think it’s real
Not the fact that Sonic officially looks the way that he does in the redesign; there’s definitely a possibility that those two images are in fact his new look
I don’t think the standee is real
/And that has a lot to do with the fact that the release date on the standee simply says “Coming Soon”/
That’s a pretty big red flag considering both the information we’ve been given about the movie, and how movies pre and post official announcements are traditionally advertised.
Now, these two bits usually work together in situations like this, so let me explain my thinking
The Coming Soon on physical movie advertisements for movies, shows and games, are usually placed on these things when there’s no release date set yet.
The same goes for teaser trailers for movies, shows and games that wanna generate buzz, even though there’s nothing set in stone regarding its release
It’ll either say “Coming Soon” or “This Summer,” and so on and so forth
Because of that, you rarely see standees for movies that have the Coming Soon bits on them. Because by the time they’re shipped out to movie theaters, there’s already a release date set for the film, /And they’re printed ON them./
Even the ORIGINAL Sonic standee had its original date printed on it, because not only was there no Teaser Trailer leading up to the trailer that we initially got before the release date of November 8th was set, BUT THE RELEASE DATE OF NOVEMBER 8TH WAS SET WHEN THE FIRST FULL TRAILER WAS RELEASED.
So if that’s the case, then there shouldn’t BE a Coming Soon printed on the standee. It should say February 14, 2020
Because ever since it was pushed back to give the animators for the movie proper breathing room to work, THAT’S BEEN THE NEW RELEASE DATE FOR THE MOVIE.
And considering how tried and true this has proven to be in how movies and games have been advertised, I don’t see Paramount making an adjustment for how the advertising is gonna be for the Sonic movie just because they greenlit its delay.
So is there a possibility that those first two images are in fact Sonic’s redesign for the movie? Yes.
There isn’t enough information regarding the legitimacy of those images. But because I’m filing them in the “Rumor/Grain of Salt” mill, I acknowledge the possibilities of them being legit
Do I think that standee using one of said images is actually real? FUCK no.
Like I said, the film and gaming industry has a standard when it comes to producing their advertisements for shit, and they’re not going to change them just because a film was delayed.
And it’s not like Paramount is just gonna New 52 this bitch and just completely ignore that they ever RELEASED that first trailer, especially when they approved the new release date for the movie MONTHS BEFORE this image of the standee was even taken
I hate to say it, but I honestly believe that this is another instance of “There isn’t enough information to say that this is legit, take this with a grain of salt, and let’s be patient and see what happens.”
Because when it comes to getting a character as iconic as Sonic right, the LAST thing you want to do is “Gotta Go Fast.”
