As they made their way through the town, Zeth looked out for any signs of movement around, and Astrys walked next to him, seeming much less vigilant. Instead of glancing around corners and watching out for danger, much of her attention was spent staring at him with that same inscrutable expression on her face.
Behind them, he could hear the labored breaths of Withstrom as he was forced to keep pace with Zeth’s quick steps, and Sinthar next to him walking quietly, doing everything he c...

AN: Content warning for some graphic descriptions of violence and gore (more than has already been shown in this story.) You've been warned.
When they arrived at the edge of the forest, gazing upon the down, Zeth saw a picture of wanton destruction. Bodies were scattered through the streets, both humans and of monsters, painting the entire town red. Windows were broken and doors were busted in, and over in the town square, merchant carts were tipped over, spilling t...

It didn’t take long for the demon Astrys had beaten up, Withstrom, to accept Zeth’s original terms—fight for him in exchange for the one human life, plus any additional ones he may claim from attacking Inquisitors in the case they needed to defend him. And after that, the second demon, Sinthar, accepted pretty quickly as well. Zeth imagined he didn’t want to receive the same treatment Withstrom did.
Once they made the deal, Zeth nodded, spinning around. “Alright, let’s head ...

It was gruesome, but Zeth cut the prisoners open without hesitation, lying each of their bodies upon the ritual circles so their blood would seep straight into the lines to power them.
He’d have to take so much out of their bodies that they’d be on death’s door, so he couldn’t afford to waste any time in summoning the demons that would claim their lives. Not only was he on a time limit with the monsters currently rampaging through town, he was also under time pressure to get neg...

As Zeth backed away from the fleshtaker still gulping down the rest of its victim, the Inquisitors standing at the mine entrance were bombarded with monsters.
Those Sixth Realm dog things with the gigantic eyes that opened up into tooth-covered mouths came in droves, but the Inquisitors were able to take them out, apparently unaffected by their strange pain-causing spores. The soldiers wielded their swords with a surprising lack of fear, considering one of their comrades was in the proc...

AN: Another long chapter. Hope you enjoy!
The first thing Zeth did when he got back into town was get something decent to eat.
During the days he was stuck down in his lair, he’d been forced to sustain himself off of the food he’d stockpiled from Astrys’s raid on the bandit camp, which had all just been whatever seemed most able to be preserved long-term out of everything she’d brought. And, since it seemed like the bandits had gotten all of their reso...

AN: Sorry for the lack of chapters these past few days! I ended up having to basically do an entire group final project by myself for one of my classes when both of my classmates stopped responding to my messages, so I got very unexpectedly busy for a bit. But I'm done now, and just have regular final projects to do from now on, so hopefully I'll be able to upload chapters more consistently.
This chapters about twice as long as usual, so hopefully that makes up for it. Thanks for readin...

Zeth spent some more time practicing with Ephemeral Bloodforge, doing his best to try and Rank it up one more time before he slept. After a minute for each of them, the needles he made melted back into liquid, slowly forming a larger and larger pool next to him. Thankfully, the combination of his Endurance and Self-Destruction seemed to facilitate the replenishing of his blood as he spent it—not nearly enough to fully counteract the amount he was using, but at least enough to allow him to u...

AN: Patreon is acting weird. It might just be a site update, but let me know if this chapter came out looking strange and I'll see if I can fix it!
The first thing Zeth did was try to make a knife.
With the little bit of practice he had with Ephemeral Bloodforge, he drew a larger quantity of blood out of the slice on his arm, feeling a distinct cold spread through his body as he slowly drew blood out of it—something he was relatively used to already, with ho...

Upon returning to his lair, Zeth descended down the staircase and walked through the entryway, thinking over his options.
What Alfon had said set him on-edge. That man had always felt a little mysterious, and when he made a statement like “If a Blood Mage exists, the Inquisitors will find them, and that’s a certainty,” it only made him feel more so. What did he know? What experiences did he have with the Inquisitors to make him so confident?
Regardless, Zeth had built up a p...

When Zeth awoke, he found several sensations all buzzing in his mind.
The first, and most obvious, of these sensations was the distinct tickle of a System notification waiting to be read. Or, rather, there wasn’t one, but several.
Lying in his makeshift bed as he groggily rubbed his eyes, Zeth looked over the notifications.

AN: Wrote this while a little sick/tired. Sorry if it has any errors or reads weirdly, please point anything that looks wrong out to me!
In the middle of the night, Zeth approached the edge of town, Astrys by his side. She carried a large barrel she’d used to transport the goods to base in her arms, the only thing preventing her from holding more being that she couldn’t fit more in her arms.
“Alright,” he said, “stay there so your aura doesn’t affe...

As the hours stretched on, Speedy Rites Ranked up to five, and then six, before its rate of growth finally seemed like it was beginning to slow down. By that point, Empowerment Ritual’s requirement was at fourteen hours—just about what it was when he was only Level eight. And Hellfire Ritual was now at only half an hour, with Demonic Covenant’s being around two and a half. All-in-all, he was very glad to have finally purchased this Skill.

Clin still quite miffed by the treatment he’d been given by these Inquisitors. He’d been busy with work in the office, trying to ensure everything with the bandits went well, when they burst into the building and started asking around for anyone in charge they could interrogate. Somehow, he had been chosen, and so they picked him up right there and began dragging him back to their outpost outside of town.
He’d already been annoyed, and then he had to go through those crowds of dir...

AN: I stayed up until 4 in the morning working on this one---it's pretty long. Hope you enjoy :)
After asking around a bit, Zeth found his way to the place the Inquisitors would be holding their witnesses.
At first, he’d assumed they’d be using existing prisons in the guard precinct, or at least building onto them somehow, but it turned out that they’d made an outpost on the outskirts of town. So he went out in the direction he was pointed in, expecting ...

Blood pooled at Zeth’s feet.
He was standing before what was practically a mountain of corpses, all of them mangled and slashed apart, piled at the bottom of his stairs.
Astrys stood behind the pile, kicking one last corpse into the rest, and nodded to him. “That was all of them.”
Zeth cleared his throat, feeling a sting in his neck as he did, but nothing even close to as bad as yesterday. He rasped out, “You killed the whole camp?”
“Yes. After finding them...

“Yeah. Yeah, there is. Keep your guard up, there might be someone around.”

It took a while, but eventually Zeth finished drawing his Empowerment Ritual—all eighteen and a half hours of it. He worked in silence as Astrys slept in the bed across the room, thinking about all the implications of the fact that not only was she going to stick around in this realm presumably forever—or, at least, until either one of them decided to forcefully unsummon her—but also the fact that any demon he summoned would have the same ability to remain in this realm.

Zeth sat with Astrys up in the forest clearing. She lay on her back, gazing at the stars, as he sat nearby, leaning against a tree trunk.
“Do you remember the exact time I was summoned?” she asked, that signature inscrutable look on her face betraying no emotion.
“...No, unfortunately I don’t,” he responded. “But it was around this time. I guess we just wait. And if you disappear…”
She nodded. “...Then I disappear.”
He stared at her. “How do you d...

As Zeth walked back to base from town, sneaking through the forest and doing everything he could to ensure he wasn’t being followed by anyone, he tried to figure out his future plans.
The Inquisitors had made a very loud splash in town, imprisoning so many people like that. And he did not approve of their actions. However, there was little about it that he could immediately do. He certainly wasn’t ready to try and take on their entire group and break everyone out of jail right now...

I accidentally edited a sentence out of the previous chapter when Rosalie is telling Zeth about what she found regarding the cabal, where she also mentions the fact that she's heard there are ritual circles in one of the guild offices. That has been added back in, and is relevant for this chapter. Sorry for the mistake!)
Zeth stared at the Inquisitors as they moved to grab Rosalie and Erza, unsure what was even happening.

Zeth sprinted through the streets, heading for his meeting place with Erza. He had absolutely no leads on what may have happened to Turn. Almost certainly, it was the Blood Mages, but why would they take him? And where would they be keeping him? Did they somehow find out Zeth was their enemy, and they’d captured his friend to draw him out?
Hopefully Erza, being an adventurer in contact with law enforcement, would know what was going on. Or, if not him, Rosalie would, and he’d be abl...

He did everything he could to disguise the appearance of the ritual circle on the cloth, drawing out an extremely small one and then smudging the rest of it with dirt and anything else h...

To start with, Zeth decided to teach Sophie what Erza had taught him—mana fields.
He drew out a small ritual circle on the ground, not giving it any sort of sacrifice so that it wouldn’t have any effects, and presented it to Sophie in the dark room. He closed his eyes and focused his sixth sense on the chalky lines, and sure enough, he found that familiar covering of mana that all magic objects had around them, absolutely filled with holes both big and small where mana spilled out o...

Zeth stood in the entrance of his underground lair, dozens of feet underground. The stone floor was covered in Hellfire Ritual circles, and the walls had lines of their own drawn across them, these ones merely existing to light up the area with their faint, otherworldly glow.
Normally, he was alone down here, only ever occasionally accompanied by a demon.
But today, he wasn’t alone.
Sophie stood on the bottom step, gazing down at the ritual circles he was just working on.<...

Rosalie sighed in relief when the man and his demon left. She’d recognized that hood and mask—they were the same as what the person fighting the mannitor had been wearing. Perhaps it had been a mistake to let him go, but the way he was talking, her instincts told her to believe him when he said he wasn’t her enemy.
