The Final Fantasy XIV TV Show: What We Know So Far (VIDEO SCRIPT)

Readers, I’m not gonna lie. Thanks to Bungie’s “Destiny,” I’ve gained an interest in playing MMO’s
And I’ve tested out a lot of them in the process of finding one that was right for me.
Like D&D Neverwitner, Tera, the one made by my favorite Fantasy Date Simulator (Star Wars: The Old Republic), and the one featuring my Orc Husband (WoW)
When I played Final Fantasy 14 however - specifically during the Stormblood DLC - I was drawn to it for multiple reasons
- I always wanted to play 11 when I was a kid and see what that was about, while at the same time wanting that internet connector for my PS2 just to say that I had it
- I don’t have a PC powerful enough to properly play Black Desert Online on it, and I figured that 14 would be a decent placeholder until I either got my PC made, or BDO was released on PS4; whichever came first
Yes, I am that much against buying an X-Bone. Also, the days of me getting a system just for one game are over.
Now this isn’t me saying that I’m any good at the game or that I regularly play it. But when I did play it, I enjoyed it
/That’s why I was pretty pleasantly surprised when it was announced on June 27th 2019 that Sony would be working on a live-action Final Fantasy 14 TV series/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/robsalkowitz/2019/06/29/sony-pictures-television-developing-final-fantasy-xiv-as-live-action-series/#20a33b214e7a
Now the one key detail in this that I want to emphasize is that this series is being made by Sony Pictures TV, NOT the recently announced company PlayStation Productions.
Despite the Final Fantasy franchise being a PlayStation exclusive from 7 to 12, the rights to the franchise have always belonged to Square. The fact that it’s Sony Pictures TV making the show is just...a convenient-ass coincidence
The press release announcing the upcoming show was given by Co-President Chris Parnell. And while we don’t have any info regarding things like casting or a release date, we do know a good amount of info so far
One: We know that Sony Pictures TV is working with Hivemind, the company behind the tv show The Expanse which was on SyFy and is now on Amazon, Guillermo Del Toro’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark from CBS Films, and Netflix’s upcoming Witcher series starring Henry Cavill
/And considering Hery recently posted this photo of himself on Instagram announcing that season 1 has officially wrapped, it’s possible that season 1 of Final Fantasy 14 is next on their list/
Which also brings us to where the show will possibly be airing.
There’s no doubt that the show will more than likely end up on a streaming service, but the way Hivemind is set up, they’re probably gonna let Amazon look at it first.
That’s because as of 2018-ish, Hivemind has a first-look deal with Amazon.
/Meaning that whatever properties they’re about to make in either tv or movie format, Amazon will have first dibs on whether or not they want it on their streaming service./ Hivemind Amazon First Look Deal (Deadline)
Whether or not this is gonna be affected by the deal they made with Sony Pictures TV to bring FF 14 to the small screen, I have...no fucking clue...
But considering that Amazon passed on The Witcher, Scary Stories, and I’m assuming Gideon Falls considering I haven’t heard anything about it since Hivemind acquired the tv rights to it from Image last year, the fact that Amazon gets to have a possible first look at FF14 doesn’t really set anything in stone.
Still a factor, but not set in stone.
Two: Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton are writing the series and also serving as Executive Producers alongside Hiveminds Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel and Dinesh Shamdasani
Whereas the latter three are coming from Hivemind, Lustig and Thornton are coming straight from Sony
/Because in May of last year, the two pitched to Sony an adaptation of Gideon Sterer’s children’s book The Night Knights, which they’re making with the help of Ian Bryce Productions/ https://deadline.com/2018/05/the-night-knights-ben-lustig-jake-thornton-sony-pictures-gideon-sterer-1202382138/
They also sold pitches for the HG Wells biopic The Wells Initiative, a 40 Thieves story, and landed a million dollar deal for their pitch of Winter’s Knight, a story based on L Frank Baum’s “The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus” back in 2014. All at Sony.
So, yeah. Either they chose the two for the project because they really trust them to make it good, or they’re REALLY trying to get their money’s worth.
And Three: There will be Chocobos and a character named Cid. More than likely Cid nan Garlond. Because OF COURSE.
So while we don’t really know the kind of specifics people are usually asking for when it comes to these types of things, the info that we’ve been given about the Final Fantasy XIV tv show so far is actually quite a lot
Given the properties and the execution of the projects before it, the overall production looks to be in good hands
While its not set in stone, we know that Amazon will more than likely be the first company they present the show to as far as finding a home for it
And that two writers known for writing fun adventure and fantasy that Sony just so happened to have invested...a LOT of money on in the past, are writing season one
It’s too early to tell if it’s gonna be in good hands -- I’m personally waiting for a trailer -- but right now, I don’t really have any reason to worry
(sighs) Watch them treat this like an Isekai anime now that I said that. God damn it
