Child's Play Official Trailer (VIDEO SCRIPT)

You laugh, Readers, but that was my genuine reaction when I watched this trailer for the reboot of Child’s Play

But I assure you, that “Oh” is a good Oh.

I mean, as good as an Oh’s gonna get when you’re watching a movie about a kid and his mom surviving the antics of a doll possessed by a white serial killer through the means of culturally appropriated Haitian magic

I feel like This Is America should be playing in the background

Now I have a few reasons why I’m kinda interested in how they handle this movie, especially after the original three

No, I’m not counting Bride, Seed, Curse or Cult of Chucky because I don’t have time for this.

Firstly, I was immediately on board with the direction of the plot in regards to the Buddy dolls and how toys in general play a factor in the 21st Century

Because that was one of the things I was asking myself when I first found out they were remaking this in the first place;

How is a brand of toys like Buddy gonna stay relevant enough for Chucky to make an impact when there’s video games, tablets and babies asking if I got games on my phone?

Easy. Have the company that OWNS the brand Chucky’s toy body is in also be a pioneer in technology

/And the way the trailer does it makes the conglomerate in question look like its founder and CEO might’ve watched too much Robocop and played too much Resident Evil growing up, and I’m kinda here for that; it’s been a minute since I’ve seen social commentary in horror movies, let alone a slasher flick/

The second thing that told me I might like this reboot was when THIS popped up

(It portion of the trailer with Taylor Swift playing in the background)

And then there’s the cast, specifically two actors that upon finding out were in this just...made my mind up immediately

/Aubrey Plaza as the mom that the trailer tries a bit too hard to convince us is gonna die, and Brian Tyree Henry as Detective Norris/

Who because he’s been reimagined as a black man in this reboot more than likely means that he probably will

And then there’s the creative decision that this trailer made that I really liked that they did, and that’s the fact that we barely see Chucky himself in it.

No, not in a Venom wasn’t in the teaser trailer at all type of way that everyone’s comparing it to, because Chucky’s definitely in this bitch

But the way that they use him in this trailer combined with the fact that they refuse to show us his face -- not even in his Andy’s Coming form -- it just helps build up the suspense perfectly in my opinion

It makes you ask questions like “What does this version of Chucky look like?”

“Are they gonna go full CGI or do a blend of puppetry considering how I saw him move in the last frame?”

“Was I really now-years old when I found out that Andy from Toy Story is a possible reference to the Andy character Chucky’s been trying to possess in the original movies and possibly this one? Because I sure the fuck was! That totally just happened, holy shit!

So yeah, Readers, color me impressed; I kinda wanna see how this goes

While Child’s Play isn’t necessarily an all-time favorite slasher franchise of mine, I did enjoy the first three movies once I stopped being a baby-ass kid

And I’m interested in seeing how the premise of the 1988 film works in 2019
