pretty sure the switch from 3d/2d to just 2d has story reasons. we keep going back in time, and i think the 3d/2d stuff has to do with the top hero based on his character trailer. I think X isn't a hero at this point in time and I think his powers cause the 2d/3d swapping.

Cause if it weren't for me watching the to be hero x trailer before watching the show I would've never understood why the animation changes from 3d to 2d at times.

But correctly guessing on 50% odds ten times in a row is only a .000976 probability -- less than one-tenth of a percent, so I'd call that pretty lucky lol.
