The current emperor did not pass the shrine but he was the only child when the former died which is why her got the throne. Jinshi would have gotten his royal blood from his dad as Maomao said the eyesight just skipped a generation. Also I don’t know if it said Jinshi was colorblind because he seems confused that that was possible but I also heard a lot of people who are colorblind don’t know they are because colors just look like that to them and that could explain why Jinshi was so quiet and didn’t ever help. Also black and white Maomao is so funny 😂

I think she purposely doesn't let herself think about who he is or anything and goes along with him being a eunuch. She just wants to have a simple life (with all her fun puzzles given to her) in the rear palace.

As Lakan’s daughter and *not gonna say it because it a spoiler* she’d be mid ranked at the very least, 3 out of 4 of the top ranked concubines would have no choice but to shun her because she knows way too much about them and they know she can make medicines and poisons. She’d have no protections against the other concubines or her own ladies in waiting who’d see her getting preferential treatment not just from Jinshi but the Emperor. And for Jinshi the only way to protect Maomao at that point would be to reveal himself and take Maomao as his personal concubine. And yes that would protect Maomao somewhat by taking her out of competition for the emperor, the royal family has access to the imperial harem but they don’t share concubines. But that present its own problems because being claimed dooms you to the imperial harem forever….as you’ll see in later episodes.

2025-02-25 02:00:18 +0000 UTCYeah, adult Jinshi is constantly mistaken for a woman, children by default are pretty androgynous so a particularly beautiful child is gonna read as female and we know his preferences. This scene felt so fast animated because the level of dread I felt reading the manga had me staring at each frame hoping to keep him away from that little kid.

2025-02-25 01:58:24 +0000 UTCI credit Adventure Time for me being able to solve this from the 1st time I read the manga, as soon as it was a colored coded door with red and green and a 3rd as an option I squealed. “This is for someone who’s color blind”, but it did throw me for a loop that it was used to preserve the female bloodline since color blindness is way more common in men.

I think that while the late emperor was the only heir that survived, it might be safe to say he didn't survive unscathed from the epidemic. From the flashback it appears he might have a developmental delay of some sort (to me he appeared a little child-like, and it seemed as though he was trying to give Jinshi whatever he had in his hand). He also appeared to be afraid of Jinshi's grandma. I think the emperor's mom may have been the real one controlling things back then and that Jinshi's "mom" was looking at the emperor like that because she may hate that she was given to an emperor with no control. (I air quote mom cus I still fully believe Jinshi is the former pure consort's child. He looks WAY too much like Ah-Duo for him not to be! Idc idc that's his mama lol) I don't know if anyone else caught it, but on the final door when Maomao mentioned the green door, Jinshi said "Green?" - I think Jinshi DOES have colorblindness, but as Maomao mentioned, one can become used to it over time and forget themselves after a while. I think Jinshi genuinely didn't realize that door was green because he couldn't see it. I also think Jinshi knows to be careful cus he doesn't want anyone to get the impression that he's tryna come for the throne. I also think that while in jest, the emperor knows Jinshi likes Maomao, and may even approve, which is why he was like "you can have her" after he said he'd make her his concubine and also why that convo happened between the teacher, the emperor and jinshi at the end. I think the teacher also realized Jinshi likes Maomao and was being serious in saying they should bring her into the family, but that Jinshi is gonna have to do more to protect her because new bloodlines aren't well received and it'll put not only a target on his back but hers as well. The author really cooked with Apothecary Diaries! I don't know if they have other series but I NEEEEED more from them once it's over! They cannot let this be their only series!

So based off what i said, i was just annoyed that the previous 2 comments basically ignored my efforts and repeated what i said without a spoiler buffer. The finding of certain clues is also part of the fun too, i just didn't wanna ruin it for others.

Also spoilers: Yeah I know that there are MEGA theories saying that the emperor is actually jinshi's dad like he originally thought, because of the potential baby swap that had happened all those years ago. If I remember correctly, it was guessed that the retired concubine that looks like jinshi is the real mom, with the Emperor being the dad. But they swapped jinshi with the emperor's real brother, who unfortunately died.

Solid pacing and the animation feels better than its been the past few episodes. Also love that they're starting to up the hints at Jinshi's identity, both from Maomao's end and from Jinshi directly. Really excited for the rest of this cour & especially next cour!
