I think the reason Nanao's sword has this ability, and why there is a curse on it, is that the Ise Clan holds the weapon that was used to chop off the Soul King's limbs. Thus it has the ability to "reflect a God's Powers" and injure them. Nothing else we've seen in the series can do this. Thus, the Soul King probably cursed them so that all the men in their family would die as punishment for continuing to hold onto the sword. Explains why the Central 46 treat it as a Sacred Treasure, and killed the mom for losing it.

I do remember that this fight was a bit controversial back in Manga times what with the deus ex machina that is Nanao's secret zanpakuto and her of all characters basically downing a Godlike Angel in her first real battle. Me personally, was on the side of Kubo. I like a lot of the side characters of Bleach and Nanao is one and she's been getting some nice moments sprinkled during this war leading to this huge moment and I loved it. Yeah there's some issues like how all this came out of nowhere but whatever, I still liked how it was presented and it's not like it ruins anything important. Lille needed to be dealt with and he got dealt. The end.

Beautiful ep. We got to see both sides of Shunsui zanpakuto. Katen meaning Heavenly flower AKA "Ohana" which is just the endearment way/ nickname of Katen. Then we saw Ohana's child or really just her other half as she split herself in two to form the second zanpakuto shunsui use's called Kyokotsu or "Okyou" We see that shunsui is actually cursed, cursed to bare the responsibilities left to him by others, as well as to continue on as they die. then with Lilie we literally see a biblically accurate "Angel" fall from Gods grace. His falling being his "Death"

So I guess Shunsui Kyoraku is Nanao’s paternal uncle? I’ve heard some people argue that because of feudal Japanese nobility culture Nanao’s mother would have remarried after returning to the Ise family and that Nanao’s actually the daughter of her mother’s hypothetical 2nd husband, but I feel like that relies heavily on assuming that every single aspect of Soul Society is identical to feudal Japanese culture (as there are some differences), and the was never any mention of Nanao’s mother remarrying and Kubo’s never commented on the matter after all these years, so I feel like Occam’s razor tells us that the default assumption/understanding is that Nanao is Shunsui Kyoraku’s niece?

The Divine Zanpakuto SHINKEN HAKKYOKEN (Divine sword eight mirrors) It is a Holy sword that has the ability to take and reflect the power of deities into itself and disperses it off into eight directions. The blade itself reflects the power of the opponent that its wielder is facing; when confronted by the sword while utilizing a great enough power, opponents are unable to even see it due to how bright it appears to be at the time. A blow from the sword results in energy being dispersed in multiple directions at once. This ability was foreshadowed upon Lille Barro with Senjimaru’s Bankai which showed him shooting at mirrors and ended up shooting himself reflected upon him. Tragically as Nanao’s mother believed and assured that only members of the Ise clan would be affected little did she realize that the curse affects anyone in related association to them such as his brother, and would go on to affect everyone precious to him:, Yamamoto, Unohana and Ukitake.
