Friendly reminder to anime only. Remember homegirl's IKEA Bankai done to Lille and Pernida? Lille got holes put all over him from his gun getting deflected. This fight, he got holes put on him from Shunsui's Bankai sharing the pain. Pernida got sucked into a vacuum of black sand. His fight he was consumed by Mayuri's Bankai and Kurotsuchi ( his name ) means Black Sand/Soil. Her Bankai predicted their future deaths and manifested them into metaphoric realities. Just a cool thing to point out now.

There’s a filler arc where we get to see all the zanpakuto of the soul reapers (I won’t say why as to not spoil the ply for it) so it would be the 2nd time we see his. IMO it’s the best filler arc from Bleach and worth a watch bc it gives a look into their relations with each other. Like how Renji’s zanpakuto didn’t even respect him enough to tell him the full name, you’ll get to understand more why it didn’t.

Lile, Sternritter X, is supposed to be a biblical angel. The higher the angel, the closer to god, the more grotesque they're supposed to look. It even says when a human looks upon an angel true form they freeze in fear. It's why Shunsui couldn't move at first.

Apparently, this was a calm episode due to the amount of heavy dialogue according to one of the animators and said wait till next week. I won’t say it’s a priority to avoid hyping anyone up and which it could potentially be, but based on the manga of what is the follow up of the last battle, it should have crazy animation.

If you were around when the ch came out, to this day his bankai is controversial because there's no fucking explained restrictions to its limitations. Never was about explaining the ability, but why it seemingly can one shot anyone in the Bleachverse with no proper explanation. It was even worse when what happens next happens. Since you asked here's TLDR Shunsui Shikai = Childrens Entertainment(example Red Light Green Light like at the beginning and the shadow game) Shunsui Bankai = Adult Entertainment(A Play with multiple acts each act is different) and much like Yammamoto's bankai his has multiple "stages/forms" that effect a massive area just from using it, which really shows just how big of a pillarstone these 2 are. Also it is based of a real play from what I understand(comments please correct me if I'm wrong) basic version 2 lovers man abuses woman(wound sharing), comes down with illness(gave him ebola) feels regret, they then throw themselves into water to drown together(they drown in water draining spiritual pressure), in a final act of cowardice the man tries to swim away even in his last moments, when the woman kills him cutting his neck, leaving him to die cold and alone.(head goes kaboom) A fitting end for an opponent who faces someone as cruel as the captain commander. Also Lille Barro's design is heavily inspired by that of a biblically accurate angel and specifically a seraphim and that is why when he initially transforms Shunsui "can't move" as when a human being sees an angel the same would happen. Really cool design choices that many will completely miss. Also Also the best way to describe Lille Barro's is the X- Axis makes it so he cant miss with his basic ability, then the power up pretty much puts him on another "axis" from everyone else making it so nothing can hit him. Super creative use of a power starting from X and I remember reading the arc it was always the one I was the most curious about and boy did Kubo cook.

@YaBoyRoshi His zanpakuto, the woman that appears, is who determines as far as I’m aware. Since shunsui has only used his bankai once, as it’s a bankai that can easily backfire on him, we don’t know if there are different plays that can be used during his bankai. Since his shikai has multiple children’s games I’d say his bankai probably has multiple plays too.

The story goes like this: A man hits the woman, then he feels her pain and experiences regret; later he's struck by an uncurable depresion; next the man and the woman threw themselfes into the river but the man cowards and tries to escape, at the end the woman rages and cuts his throat. In this scenario, Shunsui plays the woman and his opponent the man; for the play to continue the opponent must fullfill the conditions of the act; example, he must regret harming Shunsui for the next act to occur if not it ends there.

That “Yooooooooooooooo……….Yaw” which signifies the start of a Japanese theatrical play is immensely addictive and satisfying, send help as I can’t stop playing it. Anyways, Reikaku = Spirit Sense And the ‘Dharma Doll Fell Down/Bodhidharma Falls Down’ that Lilie Barro recognized as ‘chocolate ingles’ from Spain are both similar, if not identical to Red-Light, Green-Light as a children’s game, which is the gist of Shunsui’s Shikai abilities and like all Bankais, his is the Adult/Inverse version of that concept. The Theatrical Bankai: KatenKyōkotsu Karamatsu Shinjū (Bones of Heavenly Blooming Madness: Withering Pine Lovers' Suicide/ Flower Crazed Heaven Bone Spirit Withered Pine Love Suicide) To release, Shunsui holds his Shikai out in front of him with the blades pointing down, which prompts several black tendrils to extend out from him like shadows (resembling ink-drawn pine branches) while his Zanpakutō Spirit, Katen or ‘Ohana’ manifests behind him who was revealed along with most other Zanpakutō Spirits in the anime canon Zanpakutō Rebellion arc (Eps 230 - 265) as the best in anime. A vast area around Shunsui is subsequently overcast by an aura that alters the perception of those it reaches, making their surroundings appear ‘gloomy, desolate, and full of despair’ while inducing chills, and making the sky appear as if covered in eerie yellow squares, like the paneling of a theater stage, and much like Yamamoto’s Bankai with its 4 directional phases, Shunsui’s is divided into 4 acts of an adult tragic play. Act 1: ‘Hesitance and Apportionment of Wounds’ - A man hits a woman, he feels great shame as if the wounds he inflicted he can also feel them, and it becomes real damage, from mental to physical. In context, Any wounds that Shunsui or his opponent inflict on each other will emerge on their body as well, shareing the pain. Act 2: ‘The Pillow of Shame’ - The man starts feeling even worse for what he did and develops a sickness cause of this great shame. In context, black spots appear all over the body of Shunsui's opponent, causing them to bleed profusely. Act 3: ‘The Severing Abyss’ - As a way to atone the man drops into an endless ocean hoping to drown and the woman also drowns with him because she pities him. However, the man becomes a coward, starting to swim up to the surface abandoning his promise to drown along with the woman. In context, Shunsui and his opponent are engulfed in a massive, inescapable body of water, which both are meant to remain in until one of them runs out of Reiatsu and drowns. Final Act: ‘Thread-Cutting Scissors upon a Blood-Streaked Throat’ - As a result of all this, the woman wanting to get rid of the man's regret and cowardness, cuts his throat. In context, After sheathing his swords, Shunsui winds a white thread around his opponent's throat multiple times before pulling it out, leaving a deep cut in their throat that expands before blowing up their head. As for Lilie Barro’s transformation, it’s his Vollständig/Voll Stern Dich: ‘Ziliel’ (Judgment of God) which is based on the biblically accurate Seraphim angels since he’s the 1st Quincy to be granted a Schrift by Yhwach as the ‘closest to God’ and has power over the ethereal light itself.

After the manga and anime, the power makes sense. Why can't he use it with allies in the field? He could accidentally clap them. The only thing for the bankai condition to work is the play has to be "written" in a way that affects both or all parties expect for the last act, kinda as if all of Alan Wake was a bankai out of control.

What's more, the games and tragedies he "draws" are all random and decided by his Zanpakuto. There's nothing rushed about it. If anything they stretched it out because it takes less than a minute to read an average Bleach chapter in this arc.
