If my memory of the manga is correct, the pacing in the second half was fast as well, so when they stuffed it all into two episodes it just became stuffed as hell. I'm glad I didn't even bother watching the anime because watching it with y'alls reactions was way more entertaining. I think everyone would've been a lot happier if they'd just released the first episode and then released the other three episodes over the course of a few years rather than resorting to using another studio to cover the rest.

However that is something like a signature on his stories. Many junji Ito stories leave their end very open, and mostly are short stories. Uzumaki is actually one of the most “explained” stories of him. That does not mean it is bad. He is not called a master of horror for nothing.

They probably super invested in episode 1, as a pilot sort of thing, showed it around, got less invesment/producers who wanted to make shortcuts, episode 2-3 made with subpar budget and studio, then 4 couldn't save it. This should've been 10 episodes, and this story is meant to be a slow burn.

Well lit room in mid day with your friends next to you isn't the "vibe" it's meant to be experienced in. Episode 1 had potential. Then it just went down hill.

But Junji Ito stuff, in my experience, is more about curiousity and shock value than about making a good story or any fleshed out characters. The Uzumaki manga for me had some cool moments and some shots that were quite disturbing, but the story itself is no better than what we got in the adaptation.

They would’ve been walking in that city for so long if the buildings weren’t still being built. That’s the only reason they got through. And when those two, the ones that were there from the start that the spiral wanted turned, the spiral was done! The city took the other lady it didn’t care about her. Also black holes distort time the closer you get to them, the guy in the city aged faster probably because he was closer to the center than the party walking out in the woods. The spiral has always liked water. It also affects things that move slower, like it’s gotta catch you! Like something is actually trying slowly to spiral the town. And it LOVES ATTENTION!!! Like a king in a twisted castle…

I think so many people are so busy comparing series to other things they've seen that they fall into the trap of searching for the next content high. That prevents them from enjoying something based on it's own merits. I realize this is a bad adaptation of Ito's work, but so far I've never seen a good one. Every single story of his that I know of, that got adapted , had some "Weird stuff" happen to make it less stellar than the manga / books. So, I just enjoyed this for what it was - and the idea is pretty cool. If anything, maybe this poor adaptation will help sell more books.

The story revolves around something but it isn’t necessarily ever explained but you get a hint at what it is. -The king in yellow is a play that makes people go crazy and die. Why? Who knows but the goal is to just NOT READ IT! -Uzumaki is about something turning the town to spirals, or perhaps the town was a spiral itself and is returning back to how it wishes. We get a glimpse that some messed up Antideluvian cosmic otherworldly city. Is that the reason? Maybe. Doesn’t matter though what can you actually do to stop it? It’s like stopping gravity. -Shadow Over Insmouth is about a town if people that are odd and look like fish, but eye everything you do. Like they’re all in on something. Gang Stalking. And they are! But you can’t stop it because it’s bigger than everything that even the police can’t help. -Sinister! The movie about families and their children dying from some unknown force and someone recording it. -Longlegs! A mystery about how this serial killer is killing all these people and why turns out to have dark forces on his side. -Hereditary! I could go on. It’s a horror because it’s something you dont understand and happens for unknown reasons. You may or may not stop it but why is it cause? We never quite get a glimpse, we’re left with clues for us to try and find out. What was that spiral city? Why is it under the lake? Why now? Why spirals?! Why does it make people go crazy first?? Something is MAKING THIS HAPPEN! But we don’t know what and when it will strike or how. The fear of the unknown.

They have contracts, deadlines etc riding on the show, sometimes they can’t take that extra time or just release the 1 ep and wait for the next 3. Their contract probs includes a release schedule, and if they don’t follow it, it’s breach of contract and they not only don’t get paid but can be sued for that breach. Perfect world would be the producers give them the room they need but that doesn’t always happen. More often they are put under crazy pressure to get SOMETHING out, then at least they get paid something for their work as opposed to being in the hole for however many months of work.

They made the pilot and were force to either scrap the whole project, only release the first episode or try to cobble what they had already animated for the rest of the series into something passible to honor the work people put into them. 2024-10-22 01:56:42 +0000 UTCProblem is with adapting any of Ito's work is that all of his stories have extraordinarily simple themes, the theme for Uzumaki is about how people in small towns get trapped in a cycle during their lives and never do anything to escape it. Arguably his best quality is taking these extremely simple themes and then adding the horror through his art and the connection the reader has to the story physically as they read it that just can't translate to animation, the act of the page turn puts the unveiling of the horror in your hands, even the 1st episode as nice as it looked had that same problem and was directly inferior to the original work because of that regard. He can write a fantastic short story about what if people drank from this tree and it tasted super good but they could randomly get smacked to death by some giant invisible force where the metaphor is literally "what if humans were like Mosquitos wouldn't that be fucked up?" and make it work because his art in the specific artform works as well as it does. The show was doomed like every adaptation of his work before and every adaptation after not even a good production schedule could have saved this project, just go read his manga I recommend Tomie, Long Dream, Layers of Fear, and The Enigma of Amigara Fault.

I don’t know why they expected people to stick around for after credits. You need to have an actual good show for that. I will say, aside from episode 1 this was probably the next best adapted episode. But it still skipped a bunch of stuff. This manga was 19 chapters, they could have done much better if they just added even 2 more episodes.
