I loved it from beginning to end. But I had that same thing happen to me with 86. The first couple of episodes are a slog but after a few rewatches I finally got through and it ended up being one of my favorites.

Because how would they, they only know if them individually are real but they wouldn't know about the other two.

Here's something interesting to consider: If Kabru's party had been in this situation, they would've all been wiped out once again. This mainly goes back to two reasons: A) None of them would've ever guessed that there's a monster creating these "illusions" out there. B) Kabru pays too much attention to other people. Each copy is created from the memory of other party members. Kabru would be able to find every fake created from the memories of his other party members, because he could immediately spot each flaw, no matter how small. However, because he pays such meticulous attention to details in people, all of the copies created from his memories of his party members would be exact replicas of the originals. It would be literally impossible to tell the fake apart from the real one, because Kabru pays such close attention to other people.

Considering other bonus comics show Kabru being the one who personally assists Kuro in improving his ability to speak the common tongue (and Kabru himself can speak the Kobold language https://official.lowee.us/manga/Delicious-in-Dungeon-World-Guide-The-Adventurers-Bible/0001-054.png), I don't think it is a case of Kabru not viewing Kuro as a full-fledged party member. You know when I think of this doppleganger monster, Kabru's party would probably wipe to this thing because of Kabru himself. He has such insight on the people he learns about that the doppleganger monster would scan his mind and make EXACT replicas of Kabru's party and clap all of them because Kabru gets to know people down to the last detail. I’m guessing that the versions they made it through to the finals was Chilchuck’s version of Senshi, Laios’ version of Marcille, and Senshi’s version of Chilchuck. The only one I’m sure of is Senshi’s version of Chilchuck, because despite Chilchuck telling Senshi how old he is at least twice now, Senshi still treats Chilchuck like a child. And the big eyed one was the most like a little kid imo.

Everyone's views of each other (except for Laios' memories) are also likely based on preconceptions, how they felt about them when they met them, etc. etc. Laios' memories were visually very close because he pays attention and doesn't tend to judge things quickly. He gets excited about things pretty often, but he's not quick to judge, probably because he gets judged by people so often. The rest of them, mostly Marcille and Chilchuck, are pretty quick to form opinions of people and situations. Not necessarily in a bad way, it's just normal human behaviour. There is extra content from the manga that shows which shapeshifter was from whose memories along with their reasonings, if that's something that interests you (assuming you're not a manga reader).

Senshi thinks Laios looks feminine bc he doesn't have a beard, and Marcille is. Yeah. Idk how to explain that one. Stupid Laios, Marcille with the braids, and Handsome Senshi are all Chilchuck's memories. Half-foots idolize Dwarves for their masculine appearances, hence the super handsome Senshi, and the other two are pretty explanatory. Tall masculine Laios, other baby faced Chilchuck, and the last Senshi are Marcille's memories. She imagined Laios to look more like Falin (more feminine) bc for the most part elves look pretty feminine-androgynous. When she meets him, she's really scared by how masculine he is, because she wasn't expecting it. Despite being told hes an adult, she still sees Chil as a kid. Laios' memories are the Marcille with the hair down, Chilchuck with the muffler, and the Senshi without the Helmet holes. The last two are due to Laios just not paying enough attention, but Marcille is like that because his strongest recent memory of her is when she revives Falin, where she's more stoic and desperate to save her. Hence the colder personality.

Fun fact: In bonus supplementary materials, we find out how each of the party member’s memories/perceptions generated the different doppelgangers. Laios' memories/perception Marcile: His memory of her hair is vague but he vividly remembers her determined expression when resurrecting Falin. Chilchuck: Pretty accurate, although he didn’t realize he wasn't wearing a scarf Senshi: Also accurate, other than a blemish in the helmet. Marcille's memories/perception Laios: She heard that he looked just like Falin, but I guess he was too masculine for her femme loving ass, and the first impression stuck. Chilchuck: He is infantilized because she can’t comprehend that he’s an adult Senshi: His stature and height are slightly exaggerated because those traits left the biggest impression on her. Chilchuck's memories/perception Laios: His weirdness is VERY exaggerated because Chilchuck is weirded out by Laios. Marcille: Not much to say other than the hair is sorta accurate because he likes blond hair but doesn’t remember the specific hairstyle Senshi: Is more handsome because the masculinity of dwarves is a trait idolized by a lot of Half-foots. Senshi's memories/perception Laios: Twink Laios because tall men are viewed as more feminine in comparison to dwarves. Marcille: Botox Marcille because he had been told at a young age that elves were bad so he has subconscious racism against them. Chilchuck: He’s infantilized by Senshi similar to Marcille but worse. I always thought it was interesting that he's the only one who remembers the other characters more by how he feels about them and not literally as how they look. Like It's not hard to imagine that the first three imposters they locked up were all Laios' memories, because he literally just doesn't perceive people in the same way. Meanwhile everybody else's view of him was just another version of "big dumb guy in armor."

They didn't "misremember" Laios. The shape shifter scans their minds and replicates their "view" of them. It's an exaggerated interpretation taking shape. Example: A person is lowkey racist but has a black friend. The shape shifter will scan the person's mind and take the shape of the black friend but it's form will be that of an offensive caricature of that black person because that's the interpretation it got out of the lowkey racists head. Like Chilchuck's was pretty hard to differ just by looking except for the one that was clearly the "cutest" because that one was clearly Senshi's view of Chilchuck being that he sees him as a literal child.

Laios really does have that dog in him. All jokes aside, this episode is really important to his character. He's been shown as sort of disinterested, inattentive, and aloof the whole time, yet he was the only one with mostly accurate depictions of the group (just a couple small outfit details wrong). He obviously pays attention to them very well to have been able to deduce all of this, when the rest of the crew couldn't do it. Laios is just a really good person and a really good friend, but with obvious communication difficulties. He's able to convey things when it counts, though.

Senshi's version of chilchuck was the little baby looking one. Marcellus is the one that made it to the final, laios' had the messed up scarf. The author actually confirmed all the respective memories. It's a fun short read through.

It also further speaks to the thing Chilchuck mentioned about wanting Laois to focus on his social skills and communication rather than his magic. Because yes Laios does pay attention and is observant, but god does he suck at communicating and damn good at getting himself into trouble with others.
