2024-08-12 17:18:53 +0000 UTCThe worms themselves may be a reference to japanese mythology as a way to understand natural disasters. What I can take away from this film, is in the end.. the worms aren't gone. They're dormant for now until the next gate is opened. Just like real earthquakes and natural disasters. I love that the film's message is to accept worms/ natural disasters, tragedy and loss as a part of life. The gates and the worms can also be interpreted as a fantastical representation of trauma. Its always gonna be there, bubbling under the surface. The emotional trauma may resurface when you least expect it, causing you to lash out on others. But in order to move on.. we must learn how to cope with the loss by accepting it all as a part of life. Learn to let go of the past and "close the door." Life goes on. It may be dark now, but light will always shine again. You'll continue to grow up, you'll meet more people who can be that light in your life when you're at your darkest. Never give up on living and finding happiness. Sometimes the happiness was always there, but you just didn't see it. Such a fantastic film. I love it.

There was like no chemistry and it felt rushed. I much prefer "weathering with you" or "your name" in that respect. Just overall, the pacing of the movie was off to me. I do wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the director originally wanted it to be wlw romance 🤔

It was ugly and creepy… Daijin was making everything worse in my opinion… Like you turn my man into a chair and runaway like it’s a game and we playing. Refuses to change him back. Or can’t… The cat had to die. 😭😭 Towards the end I felt bad for the cat and he grew on me.🥹 Upon my second time watching I realized it was suzume who set everything in motion. When she stalked this man… took the keystone out. it was all Suzume’s fault Like she asked Daijin to be her pet… He said bet… but homeboy gotta go turned him into a chair. Lol

The ending could’ve worked just as well if she felt guilty about getting him into the situation, especially after learning he had a life and ambitions outside of his duties, which is why she did the finale instead of “being in love” or whatever. But I think I just end up head canon this rationale anyways. Also could argue they could’ve just not had the guy not like her in that way either. Think if they removed a few lines that could be considered true too.

I think some of the fantasy elements can come across overly complicated if you don't know much about the earthquakes references and Japanese mythology. Only part I'm not really a fan of in this movie is the high school student X college student. I think it takes away from the story.

The movie actually references at least two real major earthquake events in Japan. *The earthquake that kills suzume's mother is the Tohoku earthquake. It caused a major tsunami as well, and it is the most powerful RECORDED earthquake in Japan at a magnitude 9.1 (you might better remember an associated event, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor accident). Even the date in suzume's diary reflects this (the date she started blacking it out was the same: March 11, 2011) *The earthquake referenced as taking place 100 years ago was the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake. Suzume premiered 2022/2023.

Wasn’t the biggest fan of the “love story” or how the magic scenes more or less repeated the same beat multiple times. It’s neat how it all tied together in the end, but liked the non-magical elements a lot more. The side characters here rock.
