But in general, it was very common for a vassal of a lord (so basically any samurai) to take on a character from his lord's name into his "professional" name (basically the name you'd get once you become an adult and start entering service for a lord officially). That's why many historical figures in Japan end up having multiple, long names lol. They acquire new ones over time to represent their bloodline, fealty, and rank all in one.

Idk how far it goes but from the shows context, I guess that people couldn't even use any of the characters contained in the emperor's name
