Also, Seppuku is an honor for samurai, so assisting was important so as not to make it look unsightly. Normally, in a lord's case, it was done by a vassal, and if it was a vassal, it was done by a relative or colleague. There were also cases in which a person who committed Seppuku asks a person they chose to do Kaishaku. Beheading someone is not an easy task, and if someone with inferior sword skills does the job, it will be a failure. So, in a lot of cases, those who are skilled with swords are chosen as Kaishaku.

Also to point directly to what you said, your definition of love can't really be applied to a society in which people will kill/allow themselves or others they love, to be killed because of something as simple as speaking out of turn. A big point of this show has been Blackthorne realizing everything he thought he knew about people, relationships, how to live, do not apply necessarily outside his general sphere of existence back home in London. I don't think buntaro loves mariko in the traditional sense, but in his own twisted way he obviously feels very strongly towards her, in both a possessive way and a different way too that's hard to pinpoint. He's still samurai but it's like Royalty marrying a poor noble from the country side. While at the same time she be looking up this wild untamed sea barbarian and thinking "i want some of that." Also, that tea house owner might be on to something. It's not like Toranaga to leave such vulnerabilities while negotiating or playing game of thrones. The only times where his conventionally fool proof plans had left him vulnerable, Blackthorne had saved him. So, it's not like Toranaga isn't aware or anticipating fate to be at play here. Also, sometimes in order fool your enemies you have to fool your closest allies. I dunno, I might just be blowing smoke up everyone's ass. I just know this ain't over.

I don’t think he is particularly worse than Yabishige or Toranaga. He probably himself can’t see the reason for Mariko’s aversion to him and attraction to Blackthorne, which just frustrates him all the more. This episode really showed some insight into his tragic character And I might be wrong about this, but I’m pretty sure Mariko hated the marriage to Buntaro because of his lower standing and that is the main reason for her dislike in the beginning.

They never do that in movies because it would be a lot more of a gross and complex effect and it's also just more dramatic for a head to hit the floor after one sword strike. Personally, I think the warlord just really respected Toranaga and wanted to give him full respect for winning the battle, but he didn't think it through about a 12 year old not having the upper body strength for that.

In his talks, he gives her the choice to choose, her husband while he may not be willing, she still could likely tell him. I don't want to sugarcoat or make light of it, but the worst he could do is beat her for making that proposal. And she wants to die anyway, so her telling him that wouldn't mean much right? I feel she wants to live personally. Cause though her life was not her own in the grand society of Japan, in Toranaga's company, it becomes apparent more and more that she has a choice. They're property, but I feel the show has given hints that of this current point in time, she has a choice. She just doesn't want to make it seemingly, but I'll be honest and say that may be in large part of her background and society. As for her family, that's just how she feels, even though Toranaga himself said that it's honoring him and others that she lives, so that's why I felt it went into depression. And depression can happen from a situation like hers, that kind of stuff gets amplified even. You can believe she's completely valid and I believe for the most part she is, but I'm not sure if she not reading the room, but she already dishonoring her husband and no one is going to give her death. So she really could use that to her advantage in what she does or say.

Her desire for suicide goes much deeper than depression, it is complete cultural indoctrination about the ritualistic nature of honor in death. She feels like she is being denied her right and honor to join her family in death, as that is what people are taught to desire in this time. We cannot relate to her suicidal ideations in the slightest because we simply do not think about life in the same way though our modern lens. Mariko has had almost no choice in anything she has done in her life. Choosing to become a Christian is one of her only identifiable traits that she herself chose. This is why she and every woman that lives under this subjugation needs their "eightfold fence", to disassociate as much as possible to deal with the fact that they have no agency and their life is not their own. This is not an uncommon thing that women across many cultures had to do as they had to face horrors every day in a society that allowed and encouraged such horrors.

Toranaga made it sound easy as hell to divorce, and so I guess it comes down to the husband if he'll accept that. My favorite and most plausible is that in the scene where Gin (the head courtesan) speaks with Toranaga, she's saying he DOES have a plan and she knows about it, and is extorting him for her secrecy. That's why he leaves her 2 acres of land or whatever later when he's writing his will. I mean, he's famous for trickery after all. There were other good theories too but I'll just wait til we watch Episode 8 since they may or may not be spoilers. Not sure how much it can spoil, given that this whole show is based on real historical figures, but apparently they've already deviated a little from the book that was loosely based on history, so.
