Look at the way he paints himself throughout the entire thing. He says "I just cant be in the spotlight anymore" as he stands in a spotlight a makes an hours long play basically about an exposé about HIS role in the murder of Janice Moss and conviction of Barry Berkman, which he said he wasn't going to do, last episode. He is in direct defiance to the promises he made to Jim Moss and the DA who told him not to go to the press, because it can only hurt the case against Barry. Jim says he doesnt want to see Janice's memory harmed through bad exposure in the media or anything other than a complete conviction of Barry (he has not had a trial yet). In other words, Gene is being a complete moron.

Now Hank was risking going against Cristobal to try to help him all while Barry is currently wilding out and could give two shits about helping Hank. If he cared nothing about Hank before, he cares even less now and home boy Hank was still tryna help. Yes, he still came to the decision to kill Barry, but it's crazy to think that had Barry not went to the FBI, Hank would be still pressing Cristobal about breaking Barry out. Hank is weirdly one of Barry's only friends. wild.

Jim may be sad cause his daughter was Janice but Jim was never in the danger himself he never had a relationship with Barry im sure gene still feels guilt and anger because Barry basically lied to him for weeks. Jim may have gotten justice but gene still hasn't gotten his closure. Sometimes prison isn't enough for some . And it doesn't matter what gene does Barrys literally actively about to either get out or get way better treatment. How is that justice? Ik gene doesn't know that but he probably feels like Barry took everything and left him with nothing. And the only way gene knows how to fill that hole is by doing this. Ill admit he may be regressing perhaps but hes not wrong or insane for doing this. He doesn't care about the trial and neither do I frankly all the trial is gonna do is make it so gene can never get closure. But at least by profiting hes getting something out of it. not everything has to be about a fuck you and more so a "well you didn't steal everything from me". And like Jim was also selfish in how he wanted to get justice he very well could've gotten Jim killed. the whole show is about selfish people. This is a theme for most of if not all the characters and to me I feel that this isn't a regression and that by your examples from s2 and 3 that gene hasn't even fully progressed hes only seemed like he has, this is just us seeing that he hasn't changed and this is who he is. I feel they're setting it up for his progression. but not that there's any regression cause imo there's never been any progression. So it seems weird to me that people are surprised and hating on him for this it's been a pattern app. We saw how quickly he moved on once he started getting back into his acting shi, but Jim brought him back to reality.

We see here with the lawyer that he’s good at twisting things for his client so if he got a hold of that interview and those statements(which he would) and it comes out that everything Gene told the journalist was exaggerated bullshit(which it would or else he would be comitting Perjury in his testimony), it would completely fuck the case against Barry. Like COMPLETELY There is literally NO REASON WHATSOEVER for Gene to be talking to the press about this case. There is no “fuck you” to Barry to be had here that isn’t already being done by setting Barry to be arrested and testifying against him. Even more than that, him potentially sabotaging the case against Barry also spits in the face of the justice Jim is trying to get for his daughter by making sure her killer is locked away forever Him turning this insanely tragic story into some sort of self aggrandizing tale meant to prop him up as kind of hero mastermind that played Barry like a fiddle is INCREDIBLY fucked up and is in line with the amount of narcissistic selfish shit we’ve seen him do across the whole show. Season 2 pointed this out with the stuff with his son and Barry’s idea of a play. Season 3 brought it up too by suggesting that all the apologies Gene was giving out weren’t genuine atonement but him just trying to skate past all the shit he’s done in the past They’re wholeheartedly correct in their assessment of Gene’s character this season

Saved his life multiple times, covered for him with the police, gave him a job when he was at his lowest. Hank thought they were genuinely friends but after all that he did for him, Barry still doesn't care about him at all.
