This rumor that Crocodile was a woman came up around the paramount war which revealed that Ivankov had history with Crocodile. But as the manga has revealed that Ivankov has had history with whole bunch of characters that aren't gender bent. People have been asking Oda this question for nearly 10 years now but he keeps saying that he isn't going to reveal Crocodiles past until the next arc he shows up in.

It is not flawless (far from it in terms of directing and cinematography), but the adaptation itself is so well done because the writing is on point and the casting is damn near perfect. It's rare to feel so much chemistry from an ensemble, and it's even rarer to have writers love and properly condense a very long and lived in mythology for a new audience. Overall, despite still feeling a bit stale and uninspired visually, the show is a huge WIN when compared to other live action adaptations and that makes me smile.

2023-10-11 00:06:41 +0000 UTCThere were many problems with the Cowboy Bebop adaptation, but the vast majority of them were with the atrocious writing coming from people who simply did not understand the source material. Visually, the netflix series already looked like a cheap exploitation film from the 70's - as in fucking ugly for the sake of being ugly, with over-saturation, an overabundance of dutch angels and quick cuts, over-reliance on contrast, too many close shots, and a general lack of storyboarding and pulling back - and that is NOT what Bebop was ultimately inspired by. Visually, Bebop pulled from timeless auteurs like Scorsese and Kurosawa, directors known for long takes, steady shots, symmetrical frames, colorful but not oversaturated palettes, and a big emphasis on nature/character juxtaposition and the use of motion WITHIN the frame as opposed to moving the camera. In all honesty, everything from the casting to the cinematography to the soundtrack to the writing was horrible in the netflix adaptation. To be honest, seeing as its the same studio behind this OP adaptation, I'm amazed the writing and casting were on point, even if the directing is still awful.

They zoomed up too close to her triggering a uncanny valley affect, the overall film felt less 80-90's retro style, and more of a early 2000's Spy kids movie style. Spike's actor John Cho is also a bit too old to be playing spike in my opinion, he just didn't really look like Spike! I think they should've even used a filter to give it a classic 80's affect to really sell it, put in the heavy film gradient and mirror some ways early Jackie Chan movies looked and i think it would of done better, even more intricate props could even sold it more. They were taking a anime made in the 80's or 90's that felt, and looked a certain way and tried to apply it to a modern day world without tweaking it to fit our more crisp and high quality cameras and sounds, no wonder it was a bit uncanny.

Lifting his eyes, widening his smile, turning his face, he is a perfect example of how to give live action a genuine cartoony feel without diving off the deep end, some other examples are Jonny Depp, David Tenant, and Robbin Williams (R.I.P). As for body language silent films also show how much expression you can put into your movements as that was the only way to communicate it back in the day, as well with mimes, clowns, and circus related stunt performers!

But I wholeheartedly disagree with the bit about personalities, especially Luffy. Toning them down was probably the best idea beacause there is a solid disconnect when they're portrayed in live action. It's literally how we ended up with the Edward issue in the Cowboy Bebop Live Action.

A great example with the bandit and brides twisted laugh and expressions, along with the cowardness of the peasant, the crude nature of the guy who asked questions and etc. These are all great ways of showing how exaggerated expressions can work in live action. Now we have to match the world to what is being shown! For example when you watch a cartoon everything looks like it belongs their because it shares the same element, from color, to how things are structured to even the filter. This example is shown in The hobbit, Dungeons and Dragons the movie, Star wars, and even Marvel Avengers. The filter blends in with the characters and their actions making them believable. For this series, make the place more vibrant! Less low filter, one piece has always been beautiful, when Luffy is excited have him stand on something, when a villain is being pompous have them set their foot on something and look down and position the camera at a lower angel giving them this look of "I am bigger then you", etc! Do some editing and you could get a nice blending result!

Now I'm no hardcore fan but I am taking a film is art class. Personally i think what they should do more on the next season is More exaggeration when it comes to expressions; let luffy yell, pose, and jump on things, have him be as flexible and dynamic as his power, I personally feel like the wanted posters should be actually drawn instead of a filter, maybe actually have their manga characters as the pictures, Better camera angels, as stated Japanese media is known for its beautiful style of exaggerated expressions, that's how you get chibi's, gross creep faces, and even edgy characters, they are all exaggerated forms of expression, that should also be extended to the camera work as well and editing. That's just my un asked opinion though

For example, Zoro vs Mr.7 was referenced in the anime but obviously it occurred too early to be shown. And also for how Luffy got into the barrel as well. Like the little new scenes but are still canon
