It's not, but it has different rules than real life. In Shonen, hot blooded Richter would have brandished his whip to attempt to get revenge on his mom. He would have probably powered up with a "RAAAAAAGH" and Olrox would have defeated him while everyone else stood around and watched from the sidelines. Olrox would have said, "ahhhh you're not quite ready yet. Take your friends and leave." That's what all these guys want to see. Goku would never RUN! The thing is, this is western writing. What would really happen is that two elder vampires would murder Richter and Annette. Blap, blap. Dead. Dead. And then they would murder or take Tera and little Maria away for torture and drinking. Dead. Dead. Richter doesn't go to Snake Way to train, he would just die. So he ran.

Story and character should trump cool moments, even if I feel Richter from the games was far more badass even as a teenager. But to be consistent, a small thing we disliked in this episode was how well Annette was keeping up with Drolta, seemingly dominating the fight regardless of whether Drolta was actually getting hurt or not. Development should be a facet of fights, too. At this point, Drolta is meant to be the second most powerful amongst Erzebet's vampires, with centuries' of experience killing vampire hunters and magic users alike. Amongst the villains we've seen, she should be surpassed solely by Erzebet - the "messiah" - herself (though we also don't know where Olrox falls on this spectrum). She should be tough. Really fucking tough. To top it off, where Drolta should be tough, the heroes *should* be weak. Richter is traumatised, incapable of magic, and not fully trained in vampire slaying due to the early death of his mother. Annette is gifted and experienced, but also hot-headed and still a relative newcomer to magic, given what we saw in her flashback. Maria seems to have grown up with magic and have the most time using it, but she also is the youngest and by far the least developed in terms of combat experience. NONE of these three would stand a chance against the original trio of heroes, and that's a good thing! Story wise, I mean, because they can then grow and learn together. It will be rewarding. But for now, a magicless Richter, an impulsive Annette, and an under-developed Maria should struggle to hold off this overwhelming force even together... right? Perhaps one or two of them, after leveling up, could deal with her permanently in the finale (given that Erzebet will be the series' villain as a whole). But to successfully go one v. one, and halfway through the season? It just makes Drolta look like a bitch regardless of her badass design. Which is a problem, because Erzebet is already uninspiring. She's too much "tell" instead of "show", a direct contrast to the EXCELLENT writing of Dracula in the first season. So if she's underwhelming, her enforcers should at least be intimidating.

Her changes from canon were good, I really like them. But instead of making her a compelling deuteragonist or support, she actually has a lot more screen time, several more ‘epic’ scenes, and a lot less acknowledged hang-ups than our supposed MC. It would be one thing if this was purely an ensemble piece like the original series, but all the early marketing and even the initial summary revolved exclusively around Richter, who is arguably the favorite video game protagonist as well. Seems like a more subtle bait-and-switch, but one nonetheless.

As the show goes on it's mentioned that she's kind of insensitive towards Richter(purposefully). That man up shit doesn't give you a mental block against your fears, you saw the man that killed your mother. I'm sure he feels guilty about it, it isn't the coolest of choices but I get why he ran. As for Annette, she's gone through much more awful circumstances but she just doesn't understand everyone isn't as strong and wiling to confront their "nightmare" like she is. Also she's rather irrational because of what happened to Ed hence why she's so ready to bust through without a plan, which I understand too. I don't blame Annette for being mad at Richter for literally abandoning them, but I can't fault him either.

2023-10-09 20:48:04 +0000 UTCRe Annette and Edouard, last episode Terra was talking about how her sister was turned into a monster and she had to kill her, and then they were all singing and grieving, so it makes sense that Annette would be thinking, "Oh I should kill Edouard, he'd want me to do that", and that night creature Edouard would recoil back at the idea of being killed And then you can't let him out of the cage because then he might not come with you since he just ran away and seems to be terrified of you and might be a hinderance to your escape with two powerful vampires on your heels I think if she hadn't mentioned killing him things might have gone differently One thing I found especially interesting in this episode was when Olrox was talking to Eduoard and the one thing he remembered was wanting to be "Free", and that's such a great way to connect his history of fighting against slavery/bondage with Annette

And The appearance varies on the soul of the human as well, Eduoard was special because as a human his eyes can see the the souls of every living being via colors which is also why he has no pupils just a ghostly blue shade of eyes. my bad for the long paragraph

She figured her friend would rather die than live as a night creature. A slave to someone else bidding. She also didn’t open the gate cause at first her plan was to mercy kill him and then after that she was kinda dealing with a vampire that can apparently use thunder clap and flash tenfold but it’s purple instead of yellow.
