They were all given special clothing that allowed them to break through the 72 barriers. Otherwise, they would have failed to safely reach the Seireitei. Rukia + Renji arrived together, which created one temporary path to the Royal Palace. Byakuya arrived later, which created a second path. And then, when Ichigo arrived, a third path was created. Yhwach took that third path, which didn't make sense in the manga. He was asleep in the manga when Rukia + Renji arrived, but he was awake when Byakuya arrived. Why would he wait for Ichigo when Byakuya opened a path (in the anime, Yhwach is fast asleep when Byakuya arrives, so Kubo fixed this potential plothole).

Ichigo's Shihakusho was made from the bones and hair of Squad Zero, so he made it through the barrier just fine. However his arrival left a gaping hole in said barrier and it would take time for it to close back up. This gave Yhwach a clear path to the Royal Palace, hence why he was waiting for Ichigo's arrival.

That being said, I don't get the impression that Yhwach is worried about Ichigo stopping him. Anyways, I now have a theory as to why Yhwach didn't leave earlier (at least in the anime). -- In the manga, Yhwach woke up prior to Rukia vs. As Nödt (i.e before Byakuya arrived in the Seireitei). -- In the anime, Yhwach woke up after Kenpachi defeated Gremmy (i.e. after Byakuya arrived in the Seireite). At first, I wasn't sure why Yhwach was allowed to sleep for a few extra hours in the anime. It seemed like a random thing to change. Now, I'm thinking it was done to fix this potential plot hole. Why didn't Yhwach didn't leave for the Royal Palace earlier? It's because the man was busy sleeping. Otherwise, there's no reason he couldn't have departed for the Royal Palace prior to Ichigo's arrival. He only had one chance (before Ichigo) in the manga, though. I just went back to read the chapters, and it looks like Yhwach was asleep when Rukia + Renji arrived (my bad). Still, he definitely had a window of opportunity to invade when Byakuya arrived. Maybe that wasn't taken into account during Kubo's original outline? After all, Byakuya wasn't initially supposed to survive his fight against As Nödt, so he wouldn't have opened a path to the Royal Palace. Or maybe I'm just overthinking things again. 😂

I dont hate them but they are easily forgettable. Chad fought some minions in SS arc. Then he fought some random privaron espada and was out til near the end where he fought another bunch of minions b4 getting waxed by Yammy. Orihime didnt fight nobody but her healing was clutch. But they both felt underused considering how important their role was initially. With such a large cast of characters, its obvious some would not get the same screentime. TYBW helped with some characters like Rukia getting the shine they were lacking.

Instead, he waited for Ichigo to arrive... and thanked him for opening a path. Renji + Rukia, Byakuya, and Ichigo left at different times, but they all came from the Royal Palace. That means three different paths to the Royal Palace were created, but Yhwach waited for that third path. EDIT: I'm thinking it was probably an oversight on Kubo's part. If my theory is correct, he's fixed this plothole for the anime adaptation.
