Yeah this is like the Evangelion of the "Sailor Moon" magical girl genre. Deconstructs and doesn't glorify the main concept. It's great too cuz it's so short and compact, really gets to the point with no BS in between.

BTW this show is one of Nozume Abe's first big shows that he animated for very few know him by name but you all have definitely seen his works Tanjiro vs. Rui, Rengoku vs Akaza, Uzui vs Gyutaro final fight, Tanjiros sun halo dragon in S3 ep 5 and he has many other works in fate etc. But this is him in his early stages and he is credited as the main action animator. Y'all should be hype.

Madoka is definitely up there with best magical girl shows without a doubt. Symphogear, Revolutionary Girl Utena and Kill La Kill (yes it is a magical girl show among other genres) definitely give it a run for its money though.

Just to clarify, this show is pretty much what allowed shaft to continue working on monogatari after bakemonogatari. Shaft has always had a low budget and not many staff, so they've had to be more creative in their animation to compensate. Shaft has often released legitimately unfinished anime, which is what happened with bakemonogatari. The monochrome screens in monogatari were notes on what scenes are missing. Shaft later left them in for the rest of the series as part of the monogatari style. Madoka was a smash hit because of its unique twist on the magical girl genre. It gave the studio enough budget to see a noticeable difference in animation from bakemonogatari to nisemonogatari. Hope you guys enjoy the show. P. S. I understand you have a full schedule, but please try and continue monogatari. People like to act as if monogatari is this neverending series, but its only about 80 episodes. That's shorter than AOT. It's been 2 years and we've managed to get through about 60 episodes. We're at the ending stretch where everything starts coming together so it's really not good for anybody if we keep having 5 month breaks every 5 episodes. Especially for comprehending the story. I'm a patient guy, I can wait for 5 more years, but monogatari really isn't the kind of story you can fully understand if you take breaks this long. It's like watching 1 episode of oddtaxi every 2 months and trying to understand what's happening. If you're not enjoying the series, it's better to just drop it. But please at least tell us. They are. Madoka's success is what made the studio able to adapt the rest of monogatari with relative qualitycompared to bakemonogatari. Bakemonogatari was released largely unfinished, which is where all the monochrome color shots come from. It was later left in for the monogatari style.

Stuff like Sailor Moon with girls that have transformations and special powers is a whole genre called "Maho Shojo" which means "Magical Girl". So it reminds you of Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura because it's the same genre but there are lots of other anime like that too.
