He is jumping the gun and trying to react to what he "thinks" she is dealing with in regards to depression. It's poor man's therapy and her feeling go unheard. While you list great alternatives but the larger problem would still exist. It's sort of the same feeling in how most even get tired of being around an overly positive person. It lump frogs over embracing negative emotions. which is why she is a powder keg.

To me this show so the parallels of being unhappy in life and how we often mask it to seem "normal"or "ok". The guy being poor, down on his luck and trying to take care of his family. He has to appear ok, nice, and doing well. The girl is on the other side of that coin. Doing well by social standards but unhappy because she has to mask her ugly feelings and put everyone else first. It's the reason why they get lost in giving in to those dark feelings when facing each other. In a bittersweet why it opens them both up to express honestly. It's in a bad right now because they don't have truly safe outlets. Even therapy she has to fake her way out of it. Being that she is being judged and not heard. Even when she tried to open up to her husband he played armchair therapy and didn't really listen. They both need to shake up their lives and be their true selves and as of right now, they need to learn the hard way.
