[MC POV]
A few days had passed, and I was spending the day in the legal office with Kiella.
There seemed to be an unusually large amount of work to handle, so I decided to help her as much as I could.
“Are you sleeping well these days?” I asked while working beside her. She was sitting at the desk, quietly focused on the documents in front of her.
“Yes, thanks to you. Sometimes Iril comes by to brag about what happened between you two, but it’s definitely less frequent than before,” she replied with a faint smile.
“I’m glad to hear that.”
After that brief exchange, the room fell quiet again. The only sounds were the rustling of papers and the faint scratching of pens.
I continued flipping through the stack of documents, trying to lighten her workload.
After a while, however, I noticed that she hadn't said anything in a while. When I turned to look, she was staring blankly into space, her chin resting on one hand, her pen loosely held in the other.
“Kiella?”
“Uh, huh?” She blinked, startled by my voice.
“What’s wrong? You seem distracted.”
“No, it’s nothing… I was just thinking about Ruina.”
Ruina—the elf who had been with her when I was reincarnated and went to find her. She had once pretended to be blind, seeking revenge on Kiella for exiling from their elven society.
“Ruina?” I repeated softly.
“…Yes. I’ve been worried about how that fragile she is doing. And… I’m also bothered that I never properly asked for her forgiveness.”
I had noticed before that Kiella sometimes looked troubled, and it seemed Ruina had been the reason behind those moments.
“If you’re that worried, why don’t you go see her?”
“No. Who would handle all this work if I left?” She replied without hesitation.
Even when she had been harsh in the past, Kiella had always been incredibly responsible when it came to her duties. Because of that, she had helped me countless times—not just with official matters, but in ways that deeply affected my life.
She had supported me wholeheartedly during my revenge against Nermedia. She had helped repair the strained bond between Agnes and Rize, and she had even offered Iril advice when she was troubled.
Maybe that was why I felt different toward her now.
The fear and resentment I once held had long since vanished. It was replaced by respect and gratitude.
She had become one of my strongest allies—and this time, I wanted to do something for her.
“Kiella,” I said after a moment of thought, “I’ll talk to Iril and take a few days off starting tomorrow. Come with me somewhere.”
“What? Where are we going?” she asked, her eyes widening slightly.
“To meet Ruina.”
“What? Where were you going?”
“To meet Ruina.”
Kiella’s eyes widened. She hadn’t expected that name to come from my mouth.
“Ruina? Why?”
“Don’t you want to ask Ruina for forgiveness? Make sure she was all right.”
“She… we didn’t know where she had gone, and we didn’t even know if she had been safe in the first place.”
“Ruina is fine.”
Kiella was surprised again.
“Really? No—how did you…?”
Though she tried not to show it, she was really worried about her.
I wasn’t close to Ruina, but I had felt uneasy hearing that an elf with such a past was living alone in a fragile body.
After defeating the Demon King, I had a lot of free time, so I quietly looked into her whereabouts.
As I told her, Kiella set her pen down and turned fully toward me.
“Is she safe?”
“Yes...”
“Thank God…”
“So, shall we go meet her?”
A sigh of relief escaped her lips, followed closely by a voice that was clearly hesitant.
“… It’s okay. I don’t want to trouble her, who is doing well, or make things difficult for her.”
“Don’t you want to see with your own eyes that she is all right? You should ask for forgiveness even if you couldn’t before.”
“That’s true, but…”
A few days later.
Kiella and I were given a week off, so we left the castle together.
After hesitating until the very end, she finally gave in to my persistent urging. It hadn’t taken several days to leave for any particular reason. We simply needed time to send a letter to Ruina, asking if it was all right to visit, and then wait for her reply.
“…”
Kiella’s face clearly showed how nervous she was as we walked. It was only natural—she was on her way to meet someone she had once truly loved.
The journey felt long, and the place where Ruina lived was far from both the kingdom and Lake Village, where Kiella served as lord.
Due to the distance, it took us three days of nonstop travel by carriage to arrive.
The village was close to ancient ruins, with no sign of life even in broad daylight. In the past, it had been home to elves who were banished from the kingdom or had nowhere else to go.
But ever since the Demon King’s rampage threw Elora into chaos, the place had been abandoned.
“Is Ruina really here…?”
“Yes. That’s the house over there.”
“…Is it okay for me to come like this, all of a sudden?”
“It’s fine. Don’t worry.”
It might have sounded reckless, but I was confident. And because I wanted Kiella to experience the reason for that confidence herself, I chose not to explain it.
“That’s the house. Go on, quickly.”
“Me, alone?”
“What else can I do? It’s really fine, so just trust me and go.”
Even with my firm tone, Kiella couldn’t easily bring herself to move. But after a moment of hesitation, she seemed to make up her mind and slowly walked toward one of the old houses.
Knock…!
Knock…!
She knocked on the wooden door of the shabby house with trembling hands.
After waiting anxiously for a short while, Kiella heard a familiar voice. It was cautious, yet unmistakably familiar.
“...Who are you?”
The door slowly opened, and Ruina appeared inside.
For a brief moment, Kiella felt as if she might stop breathing. But to her surprise, Ruina’s reaction was calm and composed.
“…Come in.”
“Hehe, you’re saying the same thing as Mr. Dayke.”
“Dayke?”
“A few months ago, he sent me a letter, and we exchanged a few more after that. He told me the same thing back then—‘I’ll find you a place to live, so why don’t you move somewhere safer?’”
“Dayke said that…”
“I’m grateful to both of you,” Ruina said softly, “but I like it here. It’s peaceful, and being alone lets me remember my magic.”
“Alright…”
It had taken three days to arrive by carriage, so of course it took nearly three days to reach near the castle.
Now, the long journey to Manjina, the Lake Village where Kiella served her lord, was finally over. But before passing the village, I stopped the elf driver who was taking us.
“Wait a minute, drop me off here.”
“What’s wrong, Dayke? Do you have any business here?”
“We have one day left on vacation, so I thought we should rest here and go back tomorrow.”
“If we keep going like this, we’ll reach quickly, so what are you doing?”
Kiella’s words were perfectly reasonable, but they didn’t change my mind.
“With your personality, if we go to the capital like this, you’ll immediately start working again. Let’s take a break here for just one day.”
She didn’t argue. She just looked at me with her big eyes.
In the end, she got out of the carriage and followed me. Instead of going to the royal castle, we walked to an inn in the village next to hers.
“Welcome… Oh my!”
The elf who owned the inn in Lake Village could not hide her surprise when she saw the guests arriving late at night.
“Miss Kiella!”
Her face lit up with recognition as she hurried forward to greet the former lord.
However, Kiella's smile felt slightly stiff. Seeing the elf again after so long seemed to make her uneasy.
“Oh, it’s been a while, Brina. How have you been?”
“Of course. It’s wonderful to see you like this. Welcome as well, knight. By the way, look at my spirit. You are now the queen’s aide.”
Since I had stayed in this village for several months as Kiella’s escort, I felt a little different from the elf.
“It seems my story has spread here.”
“Oh, naturally. The tale of the hero being reincarnated and defeating the Demon King again is rare, not just here but across Elora. For elves who haven’t heard it, it’s quite remarkable, isn’t it?”
I felt a twinge of embarrassment. I remembered that the only way I had defeated the demon lord was by cutting the cellphone with a sword. Still, I could not deny that I appreciated the innkeeper’s warm and friendly attitude.
Enjoy!!
