The queen knows the truth about hero. And this arc is about her.
Here is sneek peek of the work…
At Dayke’s words, everyone in the throne room turned their eyes toward the large throne.
Someone hidden behind the throne slowly stepped forward, and upon seeing this, Nermedia let out a scream.
“Aaaaah! Iril!”
Last night, I spent some time in the princess’s chamber, speaking with Iril. It was about an hour before Nermedia came to my room.
“Huh? Me?”
The princess’s normally large eyes widened to twice their usual size.
I nodded seriously to show that I wasn’t joking.
Iril wanted to change her mother more than anyone else, but that didn’t mean she would easily accept the absurd request.
The sentences I had prepared to persuade Iril played repeatedly in my head.
But, she said, “Great.”
“What now…?”
“I’ll do as you say.”
This time, my eyes dilated.
“Hey, Iril. I’m not joking. I’m serious…”
“Yes. I didn’t answer as a joke either. And…”
Her cheeks flushed as she trailed off.
“Can you tell me, Dayke? What should I do?”
The day passed like that.
“Nonsense…!”
Of course, it wasn’t only Nermedia who was shocked.
The elves in the throne room reacted in their own ways—some closing their eyes tightly, others collapsing in their seats—adding to the confusion.
In truth, Iril’s behavior was so unconventional that it was hard to even describe.
“Humans themselves aren’t bad. You are the one who made me like this.”
“…I beg your pardon?”
“You killed me. Five years ago.”
“What do you mean…?”
Nermedia sat before the mirror, her gaze fixed on my reflection. At first, she did not move, as if frozen in thought. Then, with deliberate slowness, she pushed herself up from the chair.
Her eyes never left mine, sharp yet clouded with confusion. The way she stared at me made the room feel heavier, as though her unspoken questions filled the air.
“Did we meet five years ago?”
She asked without fully understanding what I meant.
It was a reasonable reaction from her perspective. It wouldn’t be easy for her to remember that I was the reincarnation of a hero from what I had just said.
It was time for me to teach her carefully.
“Do you really think I did this without any resentment?”
“Well, I asked first. Did we meet five years ago?”
“We did. We were comrades who joined forces to defeat the Demon King.”
“Are you saying you were with the hero when we defeated the Demon King together? No way… you’re saying that you’re a hero?”
“That’s right.”
My answer came without hesitation, but what I received in return was mockery that sounded absurd.
“Haa. Are you telling me to believe that? That the hero’s soul was transferred into another human body?”
“Even if you don’t believe it, it’s true. Otherwise, how would I know you ordered Agnes to kill me?”
“You must have heard it from Agnes or Kiella! From the traitors who abandoned their elf pride and sided with humans!”
There was a way to immediately change her distrust—revealing the existence and purpose of the goddess. But the goddess had asked me to keep it secret, so I had to use another method.
Fortunately, there were no major problems.
“Really? Then let me ask you one thing. Do you remember the promise you made to me back then?”
“Yes?”
“You promised that if I successfully defeated the Demon King, I would be allowed to live in the kingdom from then on.”
“How could you do that…?!”
Nermedia couldn’t hide her embarrassment at all.
It had to be that way.
That promise had been made when the queen summoned me alone, just as I was heading out for the final battle with the elf army against the Demon King’s forces.
After hearing those words, I had immediately joined the elf army, defeated the Demon King, and then been betrayed and thrown into the fire pit.
The only people who knew about the promise were the queen and me.
“I didn’t tell anyone except the hero…”
“There was no need to tell anyone. I had no intention of keeping it secret from the beginning.”
“That’s ridiculous! You really…”
She still didn’t fully believe it.
I spoke to her in a calmer tone than before.
“Agnes and Kiella both joined my side to atone for the sins they committed against me in their past lives.”
“Are you saying all of this is a reward for that time? Revenge against me, who used and abandoned the hero…?”
“If only you had kept your promise. Or at least, if you hadn’t killed me through Agnes, things wouldn’t have gone this far.”
“No way… No way the hero came back alive.”
“So… Everything that happened to me and everything that happened was because of me…”
“Yes. It is your karma for betraying me, who devoted myself to your kingdom, because you refused to give up your position as queen, just as the Goddess predicted.”
“Karma… My karma…”
Nermedia repeated the word “karma” several times, then looked up at me, mesmerized.
“What… do you want? How am I supposed to make it stop?”
“Why? Do you regret it?”
“…Yes. I regret it. I regret it so much it breaks my heart. If I had known I would face this in the end, I wouldn’t have done that to you five years ago.”
One lesson had been learned at a high cost: never easily trust anything the queen says. But now, her sincerity was visible.
Enjoy!!
