Bonus Ep 77 - The Name of the Rose: Wrap-Up Mailbag

beloved patrons, this is your second bonus episode of December and your final bonus of 2024. we answer questions from Myles B, Evelyn, Jennifer, I Would Whack 500 Moles, Dogspotter, The Token Detergent Rinser (British), Jan, J F, Quixotic, Rolf, and Alison.

folks, at long last, we're finally wrapping up Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose after starting all the way back in May. it's been our longest book club series and the longest book we've read, so we thought it only fitting that we answer any outstanding questions and tie up any loose ends by answering your questions about the book and the author. we touch on everything from Eco's other Medieval novel, Baudolino, Ur-Fascism, differences between book and movie, things we didn't like about the book, some history of abbeys and mendicant orders, what a fourteenth century Medieval monk would've thought of the book if they could read it, and, lastly, how ironically should we read the novel on the whole? we had a lot of fun, thank you for the questions and thank you for subscribing.

happy holidays and happy new year

note: there are 2 small audio skips in the episode where the audio dropped during recording and couldn’t be recovered. don’t worry you only missed Like 2-3 seconds on each. thanks for understanding

attachment 1: in the episode, Luke mentions the meme where Reverend Lovejoy holds a Teddy Adorno book and says, "technically the way we close a car door is fascist" but it's not just a meme, it's an actual critique leveled in Adorno's work and, what's more, Adorno is actually correct, the way we close car doors is fascist.

attachment 2: the meme Luke was referencing
