Right around this time last year everything went ass-sideways for me (lost my home, my dogs cancer came back and ultimately took her, lost many personal posessions, had to get a better job, move, etc etc etc etc) so I never finished the pinup for the 2022 anniversary. These are... several months old at this point, close to a year maybe...The inked ones of Dakota drinking and Khuba rubbing their own sausage are inked with a gpen on rougher quality paper, compared to some of the other black and white images I've shared recently. Insane how much more I love using traditional ink on good paper

This was the first pen and ink drawing I did with the Deleter paper. I had bought one page of screen tones to play with and this was the result! I learned a few tricks and a few things to NOT do, but I reallllllly love the effect of real screen tones! I am absolutely going to buy more to keep playing with.

I try not to make promises I can't keep and have reasonable expectations for myself but this year had no reasonable expectations from me....with Christmas over now, in a new house and settled at my job of nearly a year, I've actually been able to draw again. As things get continually more out of hand in life, I find traditional art tools a nice way to disengage from my established patterns and what I might "expect" from myself in a subconscious manner when I use my iPad to draw. Its a lot more free and loose to just do quick studies in pencil, and its a good reminder of how not to rely too much on the quick fixes digital platforms offer when making art that doesn't need fixing.

This might give a little insight as to how I allocate my time while working in batches. The first 3 pages are mostly done, and the last one hasn't been touched. I had a really clear idea of what I wanted from the first two pages, you can see there weren't many changes from the thumbnails to this stage. Pages 3 and on, not so much. I tend to revise later thumbnails as the first pages come together for better flow, so the last pages in a batch tend to deviate from my initial plans.

Five pages of chapter 8, which is so far nameless, complete! This cold open sequence has been a fucking blast to draw. I'm pretty attached to this antagonist's design, too. Like most characters I don't "plan" on needing, I design them on the page, rather than separately. I'm enjoying working in these large batches! As you can kinda see, I tend to split up the work into even smaller groups rather than doing the same steps to all of them. I had pages 33 and 34 thumbnailed first while I was still figuring out how I wanted to bring the narrative back to the present, so they're the furthest along. The dialogue I always wrap up last, so I can guarantee a good 80-100% of it will be different by the time its posted in mid-october.
