patrons, here's your first bonus episode of November 2024 and the seventh episode of our book club series on Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. well, folks, this was going to be the last episode in the series but there's just too much to cover on the last two days, so we'll be back with the final episode in December. this time, on Day Six, Adso and William get so close to solving the mystery and come right up to the brink of Finis Africae but it comes at a cost for all involved. despite what we might want, there are no happy endings here, Eco is far too cynical for anything like that. instead, our heroes and basically everyone involved in the story, except Bernard Gui, are going to come out of this far worse than before. by the end, this whole ordeal will have fully broken William and Adso's once-bright outlook on the world and the Church has been darkened significantly. in the end, there's no deus ex machina to save our faves but there is a really cool dream sequence that could be a drug trip, the secret to entering Finis Africae is at last revealed, and we find out why everyone really hated Malachi the librarian.
