Patreon Forces MASSIVE Changes for Apple Money
Added 2024-08-12 15:16:55 +0000 UTCPatreon is actively seeking to ruin the platform's ease of use and are citing Apple's recent mandates as the reason why. Patreon is going to enforce these changes in order to stay on the iOS store, but I'm sure bending over backwards for Apple will stop right there, right?
The situation's a little too fresh (having just learned the info within the last hour) so there's not much to say about it, but a bunch of us are yelling at Patreon in the Discord Server right now.
Here's what you need to know:
All Patreon creators are going to be forced to the SUBSCRIPTION MODEL.
This means I will no longer receive 100% of my income at the start of the month.
This means you will be charged MULTIPLE TIMES on different days during the month based on when you pledged to a creator; like managing netflix, hulu, and disney + subscriptions.
Also membership prices on the iOS app will cost 30% more. Example: $10 tier will cost $14.
Anyway I just thought I'd let you know before any big things ended up going down.

If possible login in patreon on some other device that isn't apple. "Another important detail, is that membership purchased USING the patreon app on the iOS will ALSO be subjected to apple's 30% app store fee. So I recommend you stay away from subscribing to new patrons through the app and simply do it on the browser"

2024-08-12 20:32:44 +0000 UTCI see it as terrible option. One more reason why I'm glad I have an android.

2024-08-12 18:16:10 +0000 UTCI assumed the patreon sending you money was automatic. With the suggestion, you would have gotten all pledge that went through by the 15th on the 15th and everything else on the last day of the month. Pledge that happen after a cash-out would always go in the next one

2024-08-12 17:36:24 +0000 UTCThey can't because what if someone pledges on the 16th of the month? I can technically cash out whenever I want, but because patrons can get charged across the entire month seemingly at random, it makes sense for me to claim it all at the end of the month if I want to get 100% of my income in one go.

2024-08-12 17:30:54 +0000 UTCThey could offer an option to give you all pledge paid during the first half of the month on the 15th

2024-08-12 17:26:46 +0000 UTCIt's more a side effect than a direct choice on Patreon's side, I think, but yeah.

2024-08-12 16:56:17 +0000 UTCOnly paying you at the end of the month is kinda shitty

2024-08-12 15:51:48 +0000 UTCThat specific aspect won't affect you, but you will be affected by the change to the subscription model. Instead of getting charged once at the start of every month for every creator you support, you might get charged on the 2nd, then on the 14th, then the 28th. Also I don't get paid until the end of the month, which sucks.

2024-08-12 15:46:57 +0000 UTCFor context, in europe pledge get tax slapped on so I already pay an extra 20% I think? Thankfully I'm not using apple so I probably won't be impacted, unless apple go forward with asking 20% of all sales of company with an iOS app that advertise a payment option other than apple pay

2024-08-12 15:41:21 +0000 UTCYeah, that's definitely what happened. Sucks that they keep doing stuff like this and expect everyone to conform immediately to the changes they made on their or someone else's behalf.

2024-08-12 15:32:54 +0000 UTCThe way it looks is creators can do one of two things - make the person pay that 30% extra, or have that 30% come out of what they get. If you ask me, this isn't so much putting it in the creator's hands as much as it is Patreon washing theirs of it entirely to not take a hit on their end. "You don't like paying more? That's the creator's fault, not ours or Apple's! Honest!"

2024-08-12 15:29:33 +0000 UTCOh, damn... That sucks that they're making a big change like this. I don't mind paying extra for the tier I'm in, in order for you to make up that loss of money. 🫡💖
