NITROCAST EPISODE 60!

Super late cause I'm a slow bird! I keep seeing James talk about how OG Alice is a clunky piece of shit, and I can kinda see why but! But... I know he doesn't like playing on the PC and I got to ask, did he only play Alice via the console ports or did he play with keyboard and mouse since it was originally made and designed as a PC game? It's also got a lot more OG Doom in its blood than platformer, literally so as American McGee was actually part of the dev team for Doom, so I think that also contributes a lot, the fact it is actually more of a Doom-like in its design philosophy than a 3D platformer even though it has 3D platforming in it. RagnarRox actually has great videos on the series (he's a fellow horror lover and waxes lyrical over punching down youtuber, though of the odd gothic variety) and talks about American McGee's background and how that influenced the original Alice. Loving the stuff you be making, and loving the energy, peace out.

Can I just say? Your cat, Blinx, is adorable! Love how you named him after the Time Sweeper himself. Those PS1 cases… They heavily remind me of the PAL Saturn cases we have over here in Europe. The cardboard cases for the Saturn are quite horrific, because they are quite poor at holding the plastic that contains the manual and disc. In addition, the disc holders are so shallow that discs often detach themselves and can even fall out of the case. I have just over 30 Saturn games and almost all of the ones that come in the cardboard cases have these problems. I have pretty much every game you reviewed that was on Saturn. Rayman is mostly the same, only with asset changes made in some levels and the newly introduced graphical transitions after completing segments. I believe some songs were cut out on Saturn. Gex is a similar case, but with changes made to the Saturn’s limitations with transparency, key examples being the projected lights in the hub world and the checkpoint camera flashes. I believe every music track was on Saturn as well. Croc, however, is different in a few key aspects. The soundtrack is not complete, and the songs that are included don’t play their full duration, unlike the PS1 version. The camera also zooms in a bit more, but it’s not that big of a deal. The HUD actually includes animated sprites this time, most notably the Gobbos. The game’s art can appear different between both systems, and I’d say they both look good. For the Saturn, I’d say it’s one of the better 3D multi platform games in terms of visuals. The most infamous aspect of the Saturn version is a glitch where Croc loses his head, yet retains his eye and snout textures. The glitch also causes warping issues with level textures. It’s actually hilarious! It can only be activated when loading the game without booting from the BIOS menu. Sorry if that’s a lot of information, I just love discussing version differences like this. Love your content on Patreon and YouTube, high quality stuff!

Also like a really good platformer, a good hack n slash is defined by its moves set and mechanics. Mario games give u the obvious path the devs want to take but the move set encourages experimentation. A came like bayonetta will also give u options for combat scenarios. The basic moves and doges can get the job done, but flashy action games encourage things like long combos switching weopons or stances mid combo, using guns to keep a chain going, sometime u get weapons that are great for certain enemies or encounter. These mechanics over up different play style for players wanting to express themself through a dance of swords and projectiles.
