First usually around 4-6 weeks prior to and 4-12 weeks after birth. The parental leaves' length depends on a lot of variables (especially on wich country you reside in), but usually starts after maternity and.In regards of pay, there is one major misconception - it's not the employer that pays, it's the goverments. And also it is usually not the full pay but sth in between 60-70% of your monthly salary after taxes within the last 12-24 months. The period parents get paid is usually around 10 months after birth and maternity leave.
