Chapter 1 Pumpkin Power

Sora had always loved Halloween, it was always a special treat for Riku and him. He always went all out, costumes, decorations, treats, celebrating really lifted his spirits.

The boy didn’t know why, but everyone could see how much he loved Halloween. When Kairi came to the island she was surprised how much he loved it.

Sora even had dreams of Halloween, of a town with strange creatures where it was Halloween all the time. It sounded like a paradise. After each of these dreams Sora felt inspired. He believed that town existed out there beyond the horizon, they just had to find it.

A few days before everything changed Sora had a strange dream, what appeared before him was a shield, a sword, and a wand. None of them felt right, and then appeared something new.

It was a purple umbrella, with a pitch black handle, a pumpkin head topper and a tiny witch’s hat at the end of the curled handle. Sora took it, his future manifesting in a way he didn’t expect.

When that fateful day happened...everything changed…

Friends and family vanished…

Strange creatures began to appear…

Riku, the boy he shared a special fruit with, was acting strange. He’d done something...terrible...the door had been opened and darkness was flooding in. Their world was about to be consumed….

“Come with me…” Riku had asked. “I’ve seen the darkness, and...I’m not afraid…” He reached out his hand, his face seemed at peace but something was wrong. “You understand don’t you?”

Sora didn’t. He loved Halloween, the cool autumn air, the peacefulness of night, the beauty of the moon light, the mischievous fun of terror and tricks. Not this. This darkness was cold, and cruel, Sora could feel it trying to consume everything and leave nothing.

He took a step back and the creatures, known as Heartless surrounded him. “Don’t be afraid!” Riku commanded.

Sora shook his head. “I’m not!” They lunged at him and something happened. The strange umbrella appeared, dipping in like a rocket.

Grab on!” It spoke as it tore through the heartless. The magic in the umbrella was strong enough to repel them.

Sora grabbed and he was whisked away, a portal opening up in the sky before their world got consumed. He flew through it and ended up in another world.

Sora woke up in a place, he thought only existed in his dreams. His clothes had changed. He had a pumpkin mask on his head, turning completely black and made of faded leather. He had white gloves on with clawed fingers. The shoulders of his jacket are gray and he now had two small bat wings on his upper back. His shoes had turned black and gained a more pointed edge like witch shoes. He had leggings that were a mix of black and red, baggy black pants, and a dark jacket. His undershirt was black with a skeleton print, front and back, but it couldn’t be seen with the jacket zipped up. He had a little necklace, a pumpkin with a gold crown on it.

His pumpkin mask had a right green eye, with the left eye looking scratched out. It reminded Sora of his first Jack-O-Lantern where he’d messed up the eye, but he thought it made the pumpkin look cooler. “Where...am I?” His heart fluttered seeing the town.

You are in Halloween Land, specifically in the grand corner stone of the land Halloween Town.” The umbrella spoke to him.

Sora was stunned for a moment, then gasped. “You talked!”

The umbrella bowed. “Yes, Master Sora, I am Horo Horo, but you can call me Horo for short.” Sora’s eyes sparkled as his name meant ghost.

“You saved me, didn’t you?”

Holo shook his pumpkin head. “You saved yourself, you chose your path and called me to you with your heart and spirit.”

“What were those things...and what did Riku do?”

Holo shook his head again. “I cannot answer that, for I do not know myself. All I can say were those creatures were not of your world.” Sora frowned. “What I can teach you is how to use your powers.”

“I have powers?!” Sora gasped, feeling excited.

Oh yes, and I am both your weapon and guide in learning them.” Horo bowed. He started with the basics, helping Sora feel the power inside him. The boy was blessed with a unique magic not known even in other worlds. Pumpkin Magic!

“Can I use this power to go home?” Sora asked.

Horo gave a look that was hard to read. “Perhaps, but for now your world is lost.”

“Lost?”

I am sorry, but fear not, I can teach you and you’ll be able to protect yourself and others.” Sora nodded.

His first spell was Float, with it Sora was able to float off the ground and hover. “I’m like a ghost!” Sora said excitedly, spinning in the air.

They were making their way towards town. “Now try this one...repeat after me...Pumpkin, Pumpkins, Jack-O-Lantern Cannon!”

Sora nodded and closed his eyes, his target was an old tree. “Pumpkin, Pumpkins, Jack-O-Lantern Cannon!” An energy pumpkin formed in his hand, it glowed brighter and brighter before it’s mouth opened and boom.

The tree was hit with an orange blast, a mushroom cloud formed in the air, in the shape of a pumpkin. The noise echoed across the land. Sora collapsed, unable to keep up his float. He’d used too much MP.

Just before he lost consciousness, he heard a commotion and saw various figures come towards him. When he woke up he was on a table, in a fancy office of none other than the Pumpkin King, a tall and lanky Skeleton. “Ah you are awake.” The Pumpkin King said with a chuckle. “You caused quite the stir out there, but no harm done.”

“Who...wha…” Sora clutched his head.

“You don’t know me?” He chuckled again, feeling weirdly refreshed. “I’m Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King!” Sora’s eyes sparkled.

“Really?!” Jack bowed.

“But who are you? You were in possession of Horo Horo, he typically only serves the Pumpkin Crown.” Jack said stroking his chin.

Horo had served Jack very briefly, teaching him what he could, Jack was a talented man in terror and nightmares, but magic wasn’t exactly his strong suit. He wasn’t powerless by any means. His rule stood strong, full of cheers and applause.

Jack was loved by many, respected, feared, celebrated. He was a true king, who loved his people, and led them well.

“I’m Sora...he just appeared to me, he helped me.” Sora tried to explain he came from another world and how it was lost, but Jack simply laughed.

“Such wacky nonsense, but him in your care means you’re the Pumpkin Prince!” Jack said, making Sora’s eyes widen.

He didn’t believe Sora about other worlds. Sora said his world was gone, but Jack showed the human side was still in tact. What they didn’t understand was there were worlds within worlds, worlds beyond the veil, some divided others connected in special ways. What they were seeing were sides of a coin the human side and the fright side.

Sora was indeed from another world, and his world was lost. The boy had hope though, what once was lost could be found, and something stolen can be taken back. ‘I’m gonna learn all I can.’ Jack was willing to help, though under the guise as training the Pumpkin Prince.

A town meeting was formed and Jack introduced Sora. He looked out and saw a variety of monsters. Vampires, Witches, Ghosts, Ghouls, Monsters, even various demons including the Harlequin Demon. “The Pumpkin Prince has appeared!”

The crowd cheered. The Mayor was happy, to have an heir, a proper heir to take the reins when Jack retired. The previous King had passed on, forcing two candidates to vie for the throne. Two friends turned enemies. When Sora heard the story he thought of Riku.

‘Riku...what happened…’ He didn’t have answers.

Sora asked Jack about it after the meeting. He sighed. “Oogie and I...we were friends once, we terrorized and frightened, often competing with each other on who could scare the most.” Jack showed Sora an old picture. Jack hadn’t changed much, though his clothes used to be rags. Oogie was skinny back then, looking more creepy and polished. “He fell into bad habits, gambling with others lives, crossing every line Halloween Land stood for, he fed on others misery. I thought I new him but…”

His desire for power was...consuming. He didn’t care about balance, he didn’t care about the town, most people knew him as a thug. Jack always tried to see beyond Oogie’s rougher edges. He used to make Jack laugh, they played games together.

Then came the Pumpkin King Successor Trial, and Jack had won. Oogie had even tried to cheat, it broke Jack’s heart, even despite cheating he still won, but the damage to their friendship had cut deep.

Horo Horo knighted him and declaring he was the king. Oogie didn’t take it well, claiming Jack had betrayed him. “I had responsibilities as King, I had to protect my people, even from my best friend, but I couldn’t protect him from himself, he...wouldn’t let me…” Torn between duty and friendship, Jack had chosen duty, banishing Oogie from the town and restricting his access to the Human Side. Only his shadow could cross the boarder.

“What line did he cross?”

“He stopped trying to just scare, but he actively tried to hurt people humans and monsters alike. He took fun in it.” Jack said, his hand balled into a fist.

Jack had gained the crown but lost his friend, he lost the person he could talk to and confide in. Oogie couldn’t or wouldn’t accept Jack as the king. He sadly saw his friend change or maybe he just finally showed Jack who he really was, someone who cared only about himself. “I gave him a second chance, told him there was always a way, but he refused to take it.”

Sora told Jack about Riku, and wondered if the situations were the same. Jack shook his head. “Now now, not every situation is the same. When the time comes you can have a good chat with this boy, ghoul to ghoul!”

Jack hadn’t talked about Oogie like this in some time, it was nice to have someone to share it with.

Sora took to his lessons learning about his Pumpkin Magic. Jack taught Sora how to use his claws in a pinch. He learned Spooky Tricks from Jack and Spells from Horo Horo.
