I have so many issues with this animation too lol. I liked some things, like the semi-realistic facial and body kinetics when there's so much speed, but everything else was so jarringly cartoonish. It really sucked the life out of the fight for me lol. That, and it seemed like it was trying to emulate that crisp Sasuke vs Naruto fight at The Final Valley in OG. Which for me, made it even worse to look at lmao. Idk what they were thinking when they decided to change the animation SO drastically like that lol

Several of the best speeches in Naruto have *phenomenal* voice acting. It hits harder when its done in a language you can understand, where the inflection and emphasis on individual words can actually be recognized. Pain's speech is one of them. Its worth rewatching in English when that's your native language.

I do want the point out The creator of One Piece loves Tom N Jerry because Ron said it. So O.P will have cartoonish animation sometimes. As you can already see there’s been “goofy” moments in that show an example characters in the show run and it looks like just spinning legs. He as in ODA wants you to take the show seriously but at the same time have fun as he does take inspiration from old cartoons.

I think it's fine. I've always like your one and the big sasuke naruto fight in the first series, the pared down animation let them focus on fluidity and the feeling of motion in a way that lots of detail detract from.

True, it is one of those bs "no one dies" moments. If is one of the few problems with this shows writing. If you don't want a character to die, then don't make a scenario where the character is shown"dying", but then miraculously survives when everyone thinks they are dead with no explanation. Stepping in to try and save Naruto despite knowing her chances against Pain. 😭 No wonder Naruto finally lost it when Hinata who loved him died for him in front of him right after the news of Jiraiya, Kakashi and the village he loved. Ron if this is peak then what's coming is going to be above peak and you will know who the bigger boss is~ Someone pointed out but this animation is almost like JJK Sukuna vs Mahoraga fight! The animation is to show the speed of the fight making it look wonky. Bear in mind that Studio Pierrot is churning out animation episodes for Naruto Shippuden weekly non stop as compared to anime now where animation studios get to release their anime in seasons and final parts.(That is aside to a Studio M pushing their animators to work and release J anime with a F up schedule.)

As Ron pointed out, Hinata should have died here. Frankly that's the only detail that weakens this arc for me. There's no way Pain would miss a vital point and then say that "his parents were killed the very same way by Konoha shinobi". Not to mention Kyuubi's devastation afterwards. Who could have survived that, especially being unconscious and unable to escape or defend themselves?

The dichotomy presented in episode 166 is something I'm yet to see presented at this level in another show. Logically we understand Nagato, we know his actions are justified, we know that every life he takes was also taken from his people, but when Hinata is laying on the ground pierced by his rod, everyone's eyes just goes red. PS: Ron was actually the first reactor I ever saw who was still able to feel empathy towards Nagato after beliving he killed Hinata, that says a lot about him. 😊

episode 166, Ron is right, if we watched this anime from Nagato's point of view, we would hate the hidden leaf village. when I watched this episode for the first time, I was less than 20 years old, now when I look at it, especially when I see what is happening to our neighbors abroad, "Ukrainians", the war is an unimaginable misfortune, I would like to say that I would never want to find myself in such a situation, but I imagine that when people so close to you die in front of you... If there was anything wrong due to a scheduling issue they would've fixed it. They are currently doing that with the JJK BD. The animators involved have made no claim that there was anything wrong with the production of 167. Shingo Yamashita said he just followed Wakabayashi's storyboard and delivered what he wanted. He (Waka) wanted an episode that couldn't be imitated. It really just comes down to whether you like it or not. But it is in no universe "bad animation." There is bad animation in this franchise, but this is not an example of that.

It's pretty easy to understand that 167 was animated in "this specific style" to convey multiple things in a fight. Such as: Insane speed, insane power and insane strength. They sacrificed detail for more fluidity. It makes perfect sense for them to animate it like this, because when a character is moving fast enough or doing something strong enough, they'll be looking rubbe stretching, the body is not going to stay solid. Here's an example: Pilots in fighter jets; because of the speed and inertia of the jet they're in, the skin of their faces literally start acting like a fluid. [ look it up on YT] So, it makes perfect sense, I personally LOVE this animation and this fight and it's easily top 3 fights in shippuden for me. No other fight has made me feel, the SHEER INTENSITY, POWER AND SPEED like this fight did. Most ppl hate this fight because it doesn't stand up to modern animation standards, I say that's ignorant af because this is not BAD animation, it's just a different STYLE and it came out more than a decade ago.

In order to get Naruto a lot of people had to be killed, since they didnt just wanna give Naruto to Pain. So yea, ofc on one side you can say its terrible to just kill these people, but on the other side Pain wants to achieve peace in the only way he thinks its possible, and that can only be done with some initial losses (which are lower than the losses humanity has from constant wars). So its like utilitarism I guess. He wants peace for the entire humanity, but this peace he can only get by first having to do some bad things to a couple of people to catch the Jinchūriki. According to Pain what he is doing is just, because if he does not do it there will only be more dead people in the future, just as happened in his past to his people. It wont stop if he cant "force" peace upon them through the fear of the tailed beast weapon. Just for example sake: Imagine rn the world you live in is in constant war from all different people. And lets imagine just hypothetically there is only way 1) to stop this endless killing. But this way 1) involves first killing some people yourself. Would you not say that in the bigger picture this way 1) would still be just? Because even though you do kill some people at the beginning, it will ultimately lead to peace and therefore reduce the losses of human lives compared to if you didnt go with way 1)? Of course this is now just an example, in the actual reality there might not be only one way that leads to peace. But thats what Pain thinks, he thinks there is only one way to get peace, and this is the way he is going. And it involves violence.

I was never a fan of the animation in this part of the fight. It would have been ok, if the fight itself wasn't also cartoony. I just can't take it seriously, when pain is knocked into the ground like a nail. That is just too cartoony for me. But even despite that, the Pain fight as a whole, is still a top 3 moment in the whole series for me, which says a lot. It just has such fantastic writing, buildup, stakes and everything.

I liked it a lot because I think it portrayed the intensity and rawness of the situation itself. But from my understanding, it was mismanaged by the studio in terms of manpower and time. Since the big 3 were still producing weekly episodes, they probably had a hard time. That being said, I'm sure the studio could've just announced that the next ep would be on a week break for the show and produced something more high level. Either way, what's done is done. People should just appreciate it for what it is haha

The animation was due to mismanagement of schedule, timing, and staff. So, you have every right to not like it, as it was mishandled. At least you're not being an angry hater lmao. I like it a lot because I think it fits the rawness and heaviness of everything that's portrayed very well. Most people hate it only because it doesn't match with modern day animation standards where important scenes are usually handled with extra staff and effort. Those people are just being selfish and greedy. They forget that in the era of the Big 3, these anime were pushed out on a weekly basis continuously, as One Piece is STILL doing, but better in recent times since they have more money and power. Series that go seasonly 12-24 episodes have more time to work around their project. As @gabriel said, I do understand why people dislike it though. It's kind of like modern day art where people make their own interpretations after looking at an art piece.

1. Animation was due to lack of time and mismanagement of schedule and staff, THAT BEING SAID, I think it portrays the hatred and absolutely RAWness of the situation. Thinking about it that way makes the animation work as a viewer. The amount of hate and pain is well portrayed in that sense. 2. I know Ron said, "Just do it at this point, who else is going to be able to take on Pain." People often forget, but once a tailed beast is freed from a sealing, the host dies. So if Kyuubi is broken free, then Naruto would die.

For your information about the animation, when there's extremely rapid movement in combat an animation style called sakuga is applied, where the framerate and animation becomes extremely high and fluid, but it often looks a bit "cartoonish". It may be odd at first before you get used to it, another example is the anime Fate Apocrypha where one of the biggest fights was animated like this and the flow of the battle is almost like liquid but it has a less detailed and cartoony vibe

Studying art and animation since watching this the first time has made me change my mind! I now love the animation in this episode (other than the Tom and Jerry moment) cos it really conveys the speed and scale of their battle and why nobody could even interfere if they wanted to. In the cleaner episodes they barely move and it is just tactics and talking so it is hard to understand why it has to be only Naruto that fights him.

Honestly the best Naruto Shippuden moments comes after the Pain arc. If you look back at everything that happened before the Pain arc you realize that only a few arcs were actually goated. Gaara Rescue arc was too slow, hidan and kakuzu arc had some fantastic moments but mid pacing...etc So honestly I don't mind a different scenario as long as its good.

Current Guy is not that "Guy" yet. Unless u are trying to apply feats from future arcs retroactively to the current arc. Guy can't use the gates like he can later on. This is fact. As of right now, the gates give, "power greater than a hokage." This hasn't changed. Guy needed 6th gate to beat a Kisame clone. Even if he killed the other paths he has no answer for Chibaku Tensei. CURRENT feats and scaling indicate Guy having a hard time. Trying to compare Guys ability to use the gates like future arcs is purely speculative when he gets a massive amp for war arc. Are we also going to assume he can use N**** G** in this fight? Not saying he loses, but it's not a stomp. And IF Pain gets off Chibaku Tensei it is over.

Couple things, until today I question why Pain decided to spare Hinata, and number two the anime did great at animating the hinata epidode because the manga wasn't as detail, but in the opinion of the majority of the community did awful with the nine tails vs pain fight, specially because it was some of the best drawing that Kishimoto did in the entire manga, I get what they were going for but it did not land IMO

Hard to get into it here without getting into spoilers, but the candy bros (M&M) are closer tied into the history of Naruto’s world and Naruto’s story specifically. Personally I think P works so well as we get blindsided by them from out of almost nowhere within this arc. It’s not like Jiraya mentions training them in OG Naruto.

Ahhh, the animation and art for ep 167! As you can imagine, it was controversial. The guy or team that worked on this episode ended up being sort of ruined for jobs. But personally, I think it was ambitious artistically. While the art is less detailed to allow more fluidity (sakuga), the art style does throw people off. However, it reminds me of ukiyo-e paintings of samurai and kabuki actors where the facial expressions are stretched and exaggerated to pronounce emotions & action, and I can't help but think that's what the team that worked on 167 was going for.

On one hand you’re right… and it’s not like Uzumaki’s aren’t known to have large chakra reserves (iirc why Naruto is able to multi-shadow clone jutsu w/o kurama chakra, but I could be wrong) on the other this is kinda the start of where the cannon power scaling gets weird with all the visual dojutsu and god-like almost alien powers and so it’s kinda on the viewer to take a lot on faith that it all works as long as the story stays together #madaraisaplothole. Which is to say I’m not complaining just sometimes it’s better to just not think and enjoy the ride.

You have around 150-180 canon episodes left (including canon mixed filler). In those episodes there are also small canon mixed filler arcs that people sometimes skip, so if you aren't watching them, it's probably closer to 150/160 episodes. Shippuden seems like a slog to get through for a lot of people because of the 500 episode count, but when you consider that the show has a whopping filler percentage of 41, it isn't THAT bad.

Hinata risking her life for Naruto is one of the most emotional scenes. She literally wasted blood, sweat & tears for him. A big step up for her character. Some people don't really like the animation for this fight, but I love it it's so fluid. I love the part where Naruto is hammering Pain in the ground like a whack a mole 25:12 lol hilarious yet epic at the same time. Stupid people in comments forgot that Pain fought Jiraya, and after Jiraya you know where he gets to collect who(i dont want to spoil) and after came to Hidden Leaf. He destroyed every ninja there, killed kakashi, shizune, DELETED whole village, then he fight vs Naruto sage mode with frogs and all intel on Pain. I just wished they gave them more personality. All the kids are literally just versions of their parents and very 2D. Boruto and Sarada at least have somewhat of an identity but it’s been so hard to get into it. Every now and then I’ll see clips and I think “damn I really need to get into this” and then I’ll see a different clip and think “they ruined it” at this point I’m really only watching it to get new scenes of Naruto’s generation

Naruto isn't going around killing people just because of his childhood. I wouldn't agree with a person murdering people that had nothing to do with his troubles just because he had a hard childhood. I don't care if that person was the protagonist. Wrong is wrong. Circumstances don't change that. Regardless of what pain has gone through, he has gone out of his way to hurt and murder people that have never done anything bad to him. There is no comparison between his goals and what Naruto is wanting to do. Naruto didn't go to the Hidden Rain Village and start murdering people just because Pain killed Jiraiya. Between where you guys are now and the end of the series there are ~155 more filler episodes so only about 178 more cannon episodes left Kinda interesting, both the original and Naruto Shippiuden are both 41% filler and have 293 filler episode between them, meaning there are 90 more filler episodes of Naruto than there are Cannon episodes of Bleach. As of now One Piece only has about 4 more filler episodes than the Original Naruto at 94 but some of that is also explained by the studios reluctance to do filler mid arc and instead covering less material per episode in some cases.

Bro or Sis those are in my top 3 I do think I biased as I watched Naruto since I was 7yrs old so to me the sound effects the villain saying “do you hate me”? Like it’s even a question. I absolutely respect your opinion I just didn’t get into other anime until I was 15-16. I think this whole arc is a masterpiece. I wish they had the frames/animation we have today because I got a slight pet peeve when Ron says the animation look too cartoonish but imagine if this was made in 2024. The style of animation was odd at the time but really its to show the fluidity/detail of the characters movement better + to show how fast they are moving, realistically someone moving that fast would have them looking funny yk? Its popular even in today's anime too ex: Sukuna vs Mahoraga from JJK P.S remember Pains body is basically a puppet so the beginning of the fight does a good job in showing that when he gets up really weird, almost like a dead body being picked up by strings.

Everyone needs a girl like Hinata man, love her. The scene where it zooms in on Naruto’s face before he transforms after witnessing what happened to Hinata is 🔥🔥 but also terrifying, especially with that ost. Why the animation was like that during the fight is understandable tho, it would be too hard to have a clear animation and this was animated in 2010 or smth btw. The ost that plays when Yamato sees the 9 tails on his palm and is rushing back is beautiful

I mean yeah, in my opinion Pain is peak in the sense that the show doesn't get much better in it's storytelling. The anime will have many moments that approach these scenes but the tension and the stakes here feel super real. But there are many epic moments still ahead, and so many other stories and fan-favorite characters to be shown.

Think of the animation like this; these are two monsters fighting. Nagato is using a corpse to fight and Nine Tails is literally a beast. I really love the unnatural way they animated this fight, remember this was still in the early 2010s. The same kinda thing happened in the Naruto v Sasuke fight when they used their powerups; close up hand to hand -> wacky animation

This animation is not for everyone. I personally love it because it shows the speed, hatred, power and intensity of this battle. Many don't realize but Pain and Naruto are moving at such a speed that most anime verse can't even comprehend. Hinata is the only one to have jumped in, not even Sakura tried to save Naruto. Obviously they all know they'd die facing Pain but Hinata did not hesitate. Also I loved when Ron said " Rengoku !" XD Can't wait for Wednesday

Jiraiya died. Kakashi died. Fukasaku died. But when Naruto thought Hinata died, he went instant 4 tails. Shows how much he cares about her. Also, the song playing when Naruto is walking towards 9 tails to rip off the seal is called "Tragic" and is an amazing piece in the OST. One of my favorites.

In my opinion, this is one of my absolute favorite fights in the whole series. It’s very emotional, very chaotic, with fewer Jutsu-Spells, great music, and impressive animation. I love how they played with the sunlight, experimenting with it (there’s some amazing art, man!!!) It also should be noted that this episode came out in 2010 (in Japanese). For that time, I think the animation for that chaotic fight is definitely a peak achievement🔥
